September 2017

Notes from the Principal & More

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! This year

we have two changes in permanent staff. Mrs.

Gwen Roseberg is now part of the Music team and

Mrs. Prain went from part- to full-time in the

Science Department.

Advisory

This year we have introduced our first Advisory

period. Every student has been assigned an

Advisory teacher and will be in that Advisory

throughout their time at Sandwich High School.

Advisory is in response to student surveys from

the last several years and has several purposes

including a place for students to connect with their

peers, set individual goals and build community

within the school. In addition, most

announcements and class meetings will take place

during Advisory. Since the year started, we have

had handbook discussions, teambuilding activities,

class meetings and the seniors were visited by the

counselors. Since this is the first year for the

students and staff, the program will continue to

evolve over time.

I-8 Conference Update

Many of you have heard about some concerns

with the I-8. Let me assure you that if we continue

to be in the I-8 or if we are forced to research

other opportunities, we will continue to be

advocates for your children. We will remain

involved in all current academics, athletic and fine

arts opportunities.

Sandwich prides itself on the principle that

students must be well-rounded and sports, music

and clubs are part of the experience. Sandwich

pride is here to stay and will continue in the

future! Go Indians!!

Communication

Communication is a key component in the success

of all students. Of course you can use the standard

communication methods of notes, emails and

phone calls, but in addition, we offer the fabulous

tool of Tyler Technologies. You should have

received a login account for your child. This

account will allow you to communicate with

teachers, check your child’s lunch account and

increase balances as needed. After you receive

your password, call the office if you experience

any problems.

Attendance is a priority when it comes to having a

successful school year. Please be reminded that

students are allowed only seven absences for the

entire school year. Doctor appointments do not

count as one of the seven absences if a doctor’s

note is provided to the office. If a student is sick,

parents are encouraged to call in before 10:00 a.m.

on the day of the absence. If you have any

questions, Mr. Tim Gipe is the administrator in

charge of monitoring attendance. If, however, you

have any disciplinary concerns, please speak to

Mr. Micky Herzog.

Post Prom

We are already thinking ahead to Post Prom and

are behind last year’s planning. Post Prom is run

by parents/guardians and does not happen each

year; it only happens when parents/guardians run

it. Last year students provided positive feedback

and said they wanted it again. Without your help,

this is not possible. We have a planning meeting

on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 p.m. in the café.

News from the Nurse

There is a requirement for meningococcal

vaccination (MCV4). The law will require

students to receive one dose for sixth-grade

entrance and two doses for twelfth-grade entrance,

unless the first dose was administered to a child

who was 16 years of age or older, in which case

only one dose would be required for twelfth-grade

entrance.

Oct. 3 is the exclusion date for seniors to have

this immunization.

before school (7:35-7:55 a.m.) and after school

(2:50-3:20 p.m.) Mondays through Thursdays in

room 167. It is open for all students in all subjects.

Math

Welcome back to the 2017-2018 school year. The

Math Department is very excited to start this

school year. Your son/daughter’s grade will be

updated every week. If you have any questions or

concerns, please contact their teacher. The email

addresses are on the high school website or you

can call the office at 815-786-2157.

Student Services

The school year is off to a fast start. The students

have been busy learning new work skills and spent

an evening watching the emoji movie as a social

opportunity.

Seniors will have the opportunity to visit

Waubonsee Community College in October for

their First Look Program offered through the

Access Center.

The Special Education Department consists of

seven case managers who are serving 101 students

with IEPs and 504 plans. If you have a question

on who your child’s case manager is, please

contact [email protected]

English Department

Welcome back to the 2017-2018 school year from

the English Department! However for many of us,

summer was not a time free of schoolwork. Our

Honors and AP classes all completed summer

assignments to keep their skills sharp. Mrs.

Heilemeier and Mrs. Misener attended a week-

long summer institute in Plainfield that prepared

them to teach AP classes.

Ms. Kocurek continued her work toward her

advanced degree and developed units for

implementation in her English III classroom.

We are all back at it again as we strive to meet the

Common Core standards, prepare our students for

the post-secondary world and develop the critical

skills needed for success. As a department, we are

developing a list of critical literary terms and

writing concepts that students should possess upon

graduation.

The month of September is filled with reviewing

content, benchmark assessing and easing back into

routine. A highlight for the yearbook class will be

a field trip to NIU to attend a workshop where

they will meet with an artist and design a cover for

the 2017-2018 yearbook.

SHS News 5

If you have any questions about your student’s

English curriculum or grades, please contact your

classroom teacher as soon as possible. Here’s to

another great year!

Spanish Department

Spanish students are starting off the year with

many opportunities to speak to one another in

order to reinforce new vocabulary and language

patterns

Career and Technical Education

First semester we offer the classes in

Keyboarding, Computer Applications, Consumer

Education, Foods and Parenting.

The Keyboarding classes will be using an online

keyboarding website at www.typing.com for the

first six to nine weeks. Students can access it from

home as well and parents can look at it to see what

they are doing.

Computer Applications will begin its focus on

Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Consumer Education is a required course for all

students at SHS and throughout the state of

Illinois.

Science

This month, students in Mrs. Volpp’s Biology II

class are learning and applying anatomical

terminology. In her Introduction to Engineering

class, students have begun documenting the

engineering design process in their engineering

notebooks and Principles of Engineering students

are working with simple machines, calculating

and comparing their mechanical advantages.

Mrs. Prain’s Biology I classes have begun the

semester investigating Harvey Creek at the local

park district. We are discussing the ecology unit in

class and this site provides opportunities to

practice and apply the information learned in the

classroom. Let’s hope weather cooperates!

Mrs. Devereaux’s Honors Biology I classes are

finishing up discussions on controlled

experiments. Students wrote their own lab

procedure for the first time and are providing

peers with constructive criticism. Classes will

soon start traveling to Harvey Creek Conservation

Area to collect samples for our ecology unit. Her

Physical Science classes are brushing up on

measurement skills in order to accurately collect

data during laboratory activities. The next topic

covered will be metric conversions.

Mr. Napolitano’s Physical Science will be

applying the scientific method to a pop rocket lab

this week. In Physics, students are applying the

scientific method to the creation of puzzles on

cubes. This project will lead students to deriving

equations of motion with constant acceleration.

Debt Service Extension Base (DSEB) Information

The Sandwich CUSD 430 Board of Education has approved a resolution to place a referendum on the March 20, 2018

ballot that would increase the District’s Debt Service Extension Base (DSEB). The funds would be used to complete life

safety work that is mandated by the state. Approval of the referendum will not increase future Bond & Interest (B&I)

taxes from amounts paid in the recent past because previously issued bonds will be retired in 2018.

With this referendum, there is no increase in cost to the taxpayer as the DSEB limits the amount of taxes that can be

extended annually to pay debt service on bonds not approved by referendum. Whether the district chooses to increase or

not increase the DSEB, homeowners will still experience a decrease in the B&I tax rate, as compared to the B&I tax rate

paid in 2017.

The referendum would authorize the district to increase the DSEB limit in the amount of $700,000. To illustrate the tax

impact the DSEB increase would have, assuming no change in the Equalized Assessed Valuation (EAV), a homeowner

with a market value of $150,000 would see their B&I taxes reduced by approximately $63 per year. With no increase in

the DSEB, the same homeowner would see their B&I taxes reduced by approximately $175 per year (see charts below).

The decrease in the B&I taxes is due to the fact that the district in 2018 will retire voter-approved bonds that were used

for the construction of the middle school. These numbers could vary, however, in the event of an increase in the EAV.

The purpose of the increase in the DSEB is to pay for life safety improvements that are mandated by the state. Every 10

years, school districts must complete a mandated life safety survey. Sandwich CUSD 430 completed the survey in the

summer of 2016 and submitted the proposed work to the Illinois State Board of Education. The work must be completed

within a five-year period.

The mandated life safety work includes such projects as:

Repair or renovation of exits

Improvements to emergency escapes and doors, including being able to control entry to outside doors

Lighting and flooring upgrades

Improvement and repairs to stairs and sidewalks

Electrical/mechanical upgrades

The question on the March 20, 2018 ballot reads:

Shall the debt service extension base under the Property Tax

Extension Law for Sandwich Community Unit School

District Number 430, DeKalb, LaSalle and Kendall Counties,

Illinois, for payment of principal and interest on limited

bonds be increased from $87,411.12 to $787,411.12 for the

2018 levy year and all subsequent levy years, such debt

service extension base to be increased each year by the lesser

of 5% or the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index

during the 12-month calendar year preceding the levy year?
