Shutter IslandBased on your viewing of Shutter Island, please answer the following questions. Remember, this is an easy opportunity to apply psychology to the world of cinema. I’ll collect these sheets on Tuesday. Feel free to discuss your answers with one another. When grading your answers, I’ll be looking for explicit details from the movie.
1. Explain the push and pull between Dr. Cawley and “Teddy” between the terminology “criminals” vs. “patients.” What larger issues do you think this tug of war might represent in our society today?
2. What kind of therapeutic approach does Dr. Cawley implement with his patients? List 2-3 examples that demonstrated this treatment approach (or approaches) .
3. List the possible hallucinations/delusions that “Teddy” experienced throughout the movie. As a psychology student, what disorder(s) do you think those symptoms were supposed to represent?

4. In your opinion, was Laeddis lucid at the end of the film? Did he understand his past and consciously choose to get lobotomized? Please explain your reasoning.
5. Please keep in mind that the setting of this film was at Ashecliffe Hospital (a fictional institution for the criminally insane) in 1954. In my opinion, the film was both realistic and fictitious at times. Please explain two examples (people or situations) in the film that appeared rather life-like. Also, please explain two examples from the film that misrepresented psychology or mental illness.
