Nonetheless, the city gov- ernment has beautified the seaside, and Nanliao’s old fishing harbor has been converted into a place for recreation. Bicycles-only paths link Nanliao to the city’s southern limits; bikes can be rented on weekends and public holi- days. If you decide to ride the whole distance, you’ll see a variety of land- scapes: beaches, windbreak forests, re- claimed land, and a row of electrici- ty-producing wind turbines. The Municipal Glass Artsand Craft Museum

The museum building was reconstruct-

ed from Hsinchu Civic Hall that was built

as the Japanese royalty residence and

a banquet hall in 1936. After Taiwan re-

stored in 1945, the building was uti-

lized by Takeover Committee, Americanarmy consultant delegation, and Hsinchu

military police station. The Municipal

Glass Arts and Craft Museum has been

the central player in an ongoing mis-

sion to promote the work of local glass-

workers. Before silicon took centre

stage in the computer industry, glass

was widely used here in the tradition-

al production of glassware. During

the annual Glass Festival, a number of

events are held at the museum as well

as in the surrounding Hsinchu Park.
