SIAL is Europe’s largest food exhibition this year and is one of the most important food shows in the world. Anuga still dominates as the Number One, and Alimentaria and now Gulfood are giving SIAL some serious competition, Gulfood is definitely one to watch, and Foodex in Tokyo is the place to go in the Asia-Pacific region, but SIAL is the major international event for the global industry. True, it has a large French component, but then you would expect it to, as France is such a huge supplier of food and wine to the world. This year, 155,000 visitors are expected (slightly less than the original forecast of 160,000.
PricesThere have been some subtle, and some not-so-subtle, price increases this year. A one-day pass on the gate is EUR115 (USD133 – a very steep rise from 2016’s EUR85), and a five-day pass EUR130 (EUR110 last time), but a five-day pass booked before September 21 is EUR110. This is important, because after that date, it is EUR120, and so if you have not already booked in advance by the time you read this, you have missed the cheapest rate. Be warned that you will be expected to show photo ID on every day’s entrance to the show. There are various discounts for groups.
Catalogue prices are EUR60 in advance, or EUR50 on the gate.
Free shuttlesFrom Paris to SIAL: departures approx. every 15 min from October 21-25 2018 from Porte Maillot (from the Pershing car park) 7:30 am-11:30 am. Return shuttles SIAL Paris to Porte Maillot: 3:00 pm-8:30 pm (up to 10:30 pm on Monday October 22 and 7:00 pm on the last day, October 25).

Also from Montparnasse (from Rue du Commandant Mouchotte) to SIAL Paris: 7:30 am-11:30 am.
Return shuttles: 3:00 pm-8:30 pm (up to 10:30 pm on Monday October 22 and 7:00 pm on the last day, October 25).
Departures approx. every 30 min
October 20 (the day before opening day)Roissy CDG airport-SIAL Paris-back to CDG: 2:00 pm - 7:00 pmOctober 21 to 25 2018. Other dates 9.00am -7.00pm
Internal shuttle Esplanade - Hall 5c, departures approx. every 10 min
How to get thereIf you are staying in Paris, the RER line B (local railway) will take you directly to the show. Ordinary Paris Metro tickets are not valid. Take the trains marked Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport as the destination, and get off at the Parc des Expositions. There will be one train every seven minutes from 0700 until 2000.
Be aware that thieves and pickpockets
target pubic transport during SIAL time: be especially vigilant.
If you are flying into CDG for the day, there is a free airport shuttle from Terminal 1 to the RER station in Terminal 2, from which you take the trains with Paris as the destination and, again, get off at Parc des Expositions.
From Orly Airport, you can take the Orlyval (light automatic rail shuttle), alight at Antony, and again take the RER line B to Parc des Expositions.
Warning – do not, on any account, get off the train at Villepinte. That’s miles from the exhibition centre!
Wise souls will leave at least an hour before the show actually closes for the evening. The queues for the shuttles can be terrible and the queues for taxis even worse. There used to be a helicopter service from the show to the centre of Paris, but that (sadly) seems to have vanished.
By carUse a sat-nav (GPS coordinates above)! SIAL is not particularly well marked on the
A1 motorway if you are heading south towards the show: by the time you see the sign for the show, on the A104 exit, it can be too late
There is ample car parking at SIAL if you are driving – be careful not to take the exit marked parking for ‘Exposants’ – that’s reserved for exhibitors. Take the ‘Visiteurs’ exit. Car parking is expensive – you will pay EUR19.00 (USD22.00) for a full nine-hour day, and even a six-hour ticket is EUR15.50. Last time, the organisers implemented the curious policy of making drivers pay before entering the car parks, instead of taking a ticket and paying on exit, and there were no signs to indicate this. To make matters worse, tickets were sold from a little wooden hut tucked away in a corner and the queues (both for the hut and the gates themselves) were appalling. It is devoutly hoped that this year they will have returned to the ‘pay on exit’ model.
AccommodationIf you have not yet made up your mind whether to attend or not, trust us on this: it is worth doing. The big problem at this late stage will be finding hotel accommodation. The organisers have a

hotel list at http://sial.b-network.com/Index.aspx or you can email mailto: [email protected] but hotel rooms now will be scarce and expensive.
Should one stay in Paris or not? There are all manner of industry events and meetings taking place in the city over the SIAL week, but (again) rooms will be far more expensive than they are outside the city, and you will be faced with the need to commute to the show halls and back every day, and that can be a nightmare: last year, some people were saying it could take over two hours.
It is often much more sensible to arrange accommodation in hotels north of the Parc d’Expositions, which is what IEG Vu does. If you have a car, it is easier to travel south to the show than it is to travel north out of Paris, and the hotels will also be much cheaper. The Logis de France organisation is a network of independent and chain hotels, and you can search availability on their interactive map at www.logishotels.com/en/hotels-par-zone?zoneid=108. A quick test (at the time of writing in late August) revealed several hotels that had rooms, for between EUR80-100+ per night, or about one-third what one can expect to pay in Central Paris.
Alternatively, there is the Campanile chain: website at www.campanile.com/en/france/paris-region These are independently run, on a franchise basis, and are usually to be found on the outskirts of towns, or near the motorway interchanges. Prices are around EUR60-70/night: double that in or very close to Paris. Campaniles have one big advantage over a lot of smaller independent French hotels in that their restaurants are open on Sunday nights. They operate a centralised menu system, but the franchisees have a certain amount
of autonomy and can buy local produce, and so the Plat du Jour and the Vin du Mois are usually worth having. The breakfasts are good, too.
There is no possibility of strolling out from the exhibition centre and finding a local bar or restaurant. If you want to arrange a business meeting, a lunch, or just a quiet drink with some clients, you have the option of the on-site bars and restaurants (which are very expensive) or possibly the on-site hotels (the same applies).
SecurityYou will not be allowed to take any bags bigger than airline hand luggage size into the show: these must be left in the cloakrooms. All visitors will be scanned on entry as well. There may be delays.
WifiSupposedly, there is free wifi in the halls. From experience, it gets overloaded and connection is difficult. Mobile phone networks sometimes get overloaded as well.
Map of SIALInteractive site map (and it’s good) can be found here: https://www.sialparis.com/SIAL-Paris/All-the-SIAL-Paris-and -agri-food-industry-news/The-interactive-map -of-SIAL-Paris.
A personal viewFrom Neil Murray, analyst and editor at IEG Vu.
I must confess I don’t enjoy SIAL much. Every year, there is something new to infuriate you – some new ‘feature’ that just makes life difficult. Navigation around the main halls isn’t great, the helpers seem inexperienced and linguistically challenged, the traffic jams are horrible and the rudeness near-universal. But once you’re in the halls, things change. It is truly a great show – not as large, nor as well-organised, as Anuga, it’s true, but still very impressive. If you can’t find what you are looking for at SIAL, it’s because you have not looked thoroughly enough.

“Food retail today is nothing like it was yesterday”
Food retail is changing… more quickly than ever. Structures, organisations, market positioning, offerings, partnerships: no facet of this sector is exempt from the ongoing revolution. “Not only is food retail completely overhauling its models, across the board, but it is also buzzing with innovations, further cementing its position as a global food laboratory,” says Nicolas Trentesaux, SIAL’s etwork Director.
What is food retail like today?
NT: It’s something that we are all familiar with when we do our shopping: food retail today is nothing like it was yesterday. From product offer to store concept through payment or delivery mode: the metamorphosis has been nothing less than radical! And the phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down, driven as it is by the appetite of consumers, keen for new things, and the ingenuity of manufacturers, always at the cutting edge of innovation. In fact, food retail, which experienced relatively little in terms of upheavals over the past 30 years - unlike other sectors – is currently
going through a period of accelerated change. Proximity, service and hybridisation are undoubtedly the buzzwords of this revolution. Illustrative of this are the world rankings of the biggest food retailers. Every year the cards are reshuffled, with the latest big change being the rise to prominence of Amazon.
You speak of an “ongoing revolution”: does it really span the world?
NT: Absolutely! You will be able to see this for yourself when you come to SIAL Paris 2018, the showcase of world food retail. There is terrific convergence between the first-hand accounts of our experts, the feedback from our exhibitors and visitors throughout the SIAL network, and the information issuing from studies that we conduct with our partners. It really is the entire planet – at different stages of progress depending on the country and the continent – that is concerned by this ongoing revolution. It is a globalisation of food retail that grows stronger as tastes and flavours travel and become established, as is
Interview with Nicolas Trentesaux, Director of SIAL Paris.

demonstrated by the worldwide success of the US burger, Japanese sushi, French baguette and the like.
Does the digitalisation of trade not carry the risk, ultimately, of homogenising taste and loosening the link between consumer and food?
NT: At the risk of sounding perverse, I would say that digitalisation is more like a means of bringing people closer to food! Because the major phenomenon that we are witnessing today, in food retail, is in fact the re-humanisation of trade! For example, store chains all over are reducing the size of the sales floor. Small supermarkets, Click & Collects and markets are riding high while, at the same time, hypermarkets are being trimmed down by several hundreds - or even thousands - of square metres. Town centres are seeing the return of retailers who had abandoned
them, and the short supply chain model is going from success to success!
Is proximity therefore becoming the essential value in food retail?
NT: I’d prefer to evoke the notion of pleasure. Consumers in fact are getting so close to the product that they’re encountering more and more opportunities to get a taste of the food in-store. This is the crux of the issue: sharing and pleasure are back in vogue! It is a trend that is loudly echoed in the emergence of “food halls”, such as Eataly, or indeed SIAL Paris, which can claim in 2018 more than ever to be the biggest events “food hall” in the world.
What is the locomotive – or flagship country – driving retail today?
NT: Every country is a model in itself since, in the field of food retail (and SIAL Paris is in the perfect position to know this), every region continues to preserve its traditions, its recipes and its successful formulas. You don’t do your shopping in the same way in
Canada, Indonesia, France or India. That said, China today is leading the way on the world markets, stealing the thunder from California, which nonetheless remains a cradle of innovation in the field of retail food. The particular strong point of the Chinese model is this terrific capacity to develop communicability and services, and make commitments to consumers.
Can you give us an example to illustrate this Chinese dynamism?
NT: I’ll speak with my consumer hat on, to offer up one example that gets my mouth watering just thinking about it! One of the biggest supermarket chains, firmly established in the country’s major cities, uses a high-performance mobile app to propose a comprehensive series of options to its users. You can use it to do your shopping and have it delivered to your home or your workplace in less than half an hour; you can use it to get a chef to prepare one or more meals with selected ingredients; or else you can turn up on site to select products, or sample them in a foodservice zone set up within the supermarket. This really goes down a storm, because everyone involved in this success shows commitment to the consumer: simply and transparently.
So the food revolution is affecting retail, too, with so many innovations disrupting the market. How will SIAL Paris 2018 take this phenomenon into account?
NT: I am used to saying that SIAL Paris is the biggest supermarket on Planet Food. All the short-, medium- or long-term trends that you will discover one day on the shelves and in the aisles of stores start out at SIAL. Why? Because we are an ideas laboratory, for all professionals, and first and foremost for retail professionals. And to measure and stay one step ahead of this ongoing revolution, which affects every area of retail, nothing beats a visit to the biggest food lab around.

Total wine output in France is expected to rise to 46.1 million hectolitres this year, according to forecasts released by Agreste, the statistical service of the French Agriculture Ministry.
This would account for a 25% increase compared to the catastrophic wine year 2017, when output dropped to a record low of 36.9 mln hectolitres due to a wave of frost.
Production in 2018 would recover to around the same size as in 2014, 2015 and 2016, when it reached 46.9, 47.9 and 45.5 million hectolitres respectively (see p12).
The public body FranceAgriMer has provided a slightly more cautious forecast of 44.5 mln hectolitres, which would amount to an increase of 21% on a year-to-year basis.
However, this volume can still increase “if it rains in the coming days,” said Jérôme Despey, the chair of the organisation’s wine council.
Vine growth has benefited from this year’s beneficial weather conditions, as a wet spring was followed by a long, hot summer.
“With the heavy rainfall this winter and spring, the high temperatures have been profitable for the vines: they love the sun,” Despey explained.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, the heatwave “does not seem to have affected the production potential up to August 20,” but has simply precipitated grape harvests, which were “remarkably early” in the Burgundy, Beaujolais, Champagne and Alsace regions.
On the other hand, some French growers
Wine output is expected to rebound from a catastrophic 2017 campaign, as hot and sunny weather has boosted grape growth in key producing regions.

have been faced with an outbreak of mildew, a sort of mould that thrives under conditions of heavy rain as seen in May and June. The fungus “has been particularly aggressive in the basins at the Atlantic sea and especially in the Mediterranean, where it has caused crop losses,” Agreste outlined.
As such, only these wine regions have seen their harvests decline compared to the latest five-year average, with anticipated drops of 4% and 11% respectively in Languedoc-Roussillon and Corsica.
Meanwhile, the rebound is expected to be particularly strong in the Champagne (+ 56%) and Bordeaux (+ 55%) areas, followed by the South-West (+ 22%).
Major EU wine producerFrance is one of the largest wine producing countries in the EU, with vines covering 802,896 hectares, which is more than in Italy (650,690 ha) but less than in Spain (941,154 ha).
Combined, these three member states make up for close to three-quarters (74.1%) of the total EU agricultural land under vines, according to the latest Eurostat data.

Goodpack offers the most efficient packing/shipping solution to Food & Beverage customers anywhere in the world – Goodpack containers. Goodpacks are specifically designed to maximise efficiency and volume, giving customers the most cost-effective and sustainable approach to transporting product.
One Goodpack MB5 is the equivalent of seven-and-a-half 200-liter drums. What does this mean for the customer? Less handling, less storage space and less waste, which equates to a savings in labour costs, warehouse space and transportation, plus a greener, more efficient supply chain. With Goodpack, customers can achieve:
• 15-25% savings in warehouse labour costs*
• 90% more efficient empty storage*
• 12-40% savings in transportation/freight costs*
• 31% more product packed in a 20-ft. sea container for export shipments
*Versus alternate bins or drums
Goodpack knows its market. They understand that Food & Beverage companies are under constant pressure to reduce operating costs, improve top-line revenue, manage procurement
volatility due to seasonality and better integrate planning and execution. Globally, companies want to make the supply chain cleaner and less cluttered. They want to pursue efficiency and deliver better service and products to customers.
Single-source rental solutionBy delivering, collecting and managing the entire rental process, Goodpack makes renting easy for the customer. The Goodpack rental system eliminates the need for capex and is perfect for managing volume fluctuations during season.
“We have a structurally strong product; but, more importantly, we help companies save costs through our rental program,” said George McFarlin, Senior Vice President – Global and Strategic Accounts at Goodpack. Because Goodpack owns and operates the world’s largest fleet of containers, this allows them to provide one-way trip rentals to most export destinations.
The inherent inefficiencies of plastic or steel drums, such as the high cost
of storage, disposal and transit, make Goodpack bulk packaging the best option. Goodpack containers reduce labour costs for handling, lower packaging and shipping costs, minimise disposal costs and require less warehouse space.
Easy supply chain integrationGoodpacks can be easily integrated into a customer’s supply chain system. These containers are made of galvanised steel and feature a convenient built-in pallet with four-way entry for forklift handling. They can be collapsed within seconds to save on warehouse space. Unlike wood and corrugated bins, they do not require structural strapping. The stackable, interlocking design when full or empty offers efficiency in storage, especially over drum containers. Goodpack containers offer other advantages as well:
• Suitable for shipping in both dry and refrigerated 20-foot and 40-foot containers
• Delivered directly to the food processor
• Empties are collected anywhere in the world
• Flexible and cost-efficient term and trip lease options

ADVERTORIAL ADVERTORIAL
Sustainability at its bestThe Goodpack model has shown that cost efficiency does not have to be achieved at the expense of sustainability. Goodpack offers a solution that satisfies today’s environmental concerns through:
• Waste minimisation (no bins, drums or pallets to dispose of)
• Reusable packaging (no recycling needed – Goodpack containers are collected and reused)
• Lower carbon emissions and environmental impact (no energy required for recycling, disposal or landfill)
Compared to other conventional containers and drums, returnable Goodpacks have the lowest environmental impact and lowest carbon footprint, which makes them a truly superior packaging solution.
According to McFarlin, “Every year, the Goodpack fleet saves the equivalent of over 7 million trees from being harvested to make disposable boxes.” Goodpack containers reduce the impact of expendable packaging and eliminate waste for a greener supply chain, helping Goodpack customers gain a competitive advantage.
“Reusing is a step ahead of recycling,” said McFarlin, highlighting that if both practices are aimed at reducing landfill waste, reusing containers also cuts down on the energy and water required for recycling. The life cycle of a Goodpack container is much longer since it can simply be used again and again.
Hygienic and food safe
Hygienic and food safe, Goodpack IBCs help companies achieve HACCP by eliminating wood contamination. Aseptic and non-aseptic bags are available to fit the large-capacity Goodpack MB5. Their bulk containers have the strength-of-steel construction and a flexibility of design that is perfect for a wide range of food products, including:
• Aseptic diced tomato and tomato paste
• Aseptic tropicals, including banana puree, mango and coconut water
• Aseptic apple juice, grape juice and pineapple juice concentrate
• Frozen concentrated orange juice
• Aseptic NFC pineapple juice, orange juice and apple juice
• Aseptic fruit pulps
• All types of edible oils
Goodpack containers remove the need for fumigation and heat treatment, putting them in high demand with Food & Beverage customers. Problems related to wooden boxes, such as mold, rotting wood, wood chips and other HACCP-related issues, are eliminated. Hygienic and food-safe,
Goodpacks are also functional in wet wash-down environments. They help customers meet certain environmental standards, such as ISPM 15 and ISO 14000.
Goodpack MB5s have a large, 1.65 MT/1,500 liter capacity and can be fitted with a hygienic food-grade barrier or non-barrier plastic bladder. During unpacking, the MB5s can be rotated to empty the product; or the top of the bag can be cut open, allowing product to be pumped from the top, making them perfect for juices, concentrates and other food products.
About GoodpackGoodpack owns and operates the world’s largest fleet of patented, steel containers. This multimodal, reusable metal box system provides packaging, transporting and storage rental solutions to the Food & Beverage industry. Headquartered in Singapore, Goodpack operates through a continually growing global network of subsidiaries and regional offices in 77 countries. With over 3.6 million containers and more than 7,700 collection and delivery points, customers can hire and dehire Goodpacks just about anywhere in the world.

In global terms, France’s walnut exports might not seem massive, but the country does nevertheless have an important role in supplying quality product to European importers.
The country has two main regions of walnut production: south east, near the Alps, where the Noix de Grenoble and Noix franquette are grown; and the Perigord region in the south west.
Average total output is about 40,000 tonnes per year.
The country’s total walnut shipments dipped 9.2% in 2017 to 29,868 tonnes from 32,919 tonnes in 2016 (Table 1). Italy remained the top destination at 9,429 tonnes last year against 11,900 tonnes previously (-20.7%).
Christine Bonnet, sales executive at French walnut producer Coopenoix, told IEG Vu
that this dip in 2017 production was due a slightly reduced crop and a moderate increase in competition.
Germany was next at 5,941 tonnes, 2.5% up from 5,793 tonnes earlier. Third biggest buyer Spain lowered its offtake by a moderate 5.6% to 5,465 tonnes from 5,794 tonnes before.
Moldova, which is a walnut producer in its own right, purchased 2,622 tonnes in 2017, virtually on a par with its 2016 volumes of 2,632 tonnes.
Switzerland ranked as the fifth largest buyer at 1,483 tonnes (1,506 tonnes in 2017).
Bonnet explained that these five European destinations favour French walnuts on quality grounds. “There is a very low percentage of waste on our walnut varieties and they taste very good. French walnuts are well known for their
France has maintained a relatively consistent volume of walnut exports in recent years and any declines have been marginal.

incomporable taste with a little touch of hazelnuts,” she said.
Environmental considerations also come into play. For European buyers, French walnuts are a local product, with limited treatments and the nature of any of these treatments being subject to much tighter restrictions compared with the rest of the world. “There is demand in Europe for our Noix de Grenoble with its protected designation of origin,” Bonnet added.
Exports account for 80% of the volumes sold by Coopenoix.
Global Trade Tracker figures for the first six months of 2018 show another slight decline (-8.8%) in French walnut shipments to 8,413 tonnes from 9,228 tonnes in H1 2017 (Table 2).
Bonnet attributed this further dip in shipments to increased competition on the walnut market.
She added that it is too early to gauge whether the full year shipments will end up behind those of 2017 or recover over the remaining months of 2018 to end ahead.
Spain was ahead of Italy in H1 2018 at 2,349 tonnes, 1.9% up from the 2,305 tonnes it purchased between January- June 2017.
Shipments to Italy eased 16% to 2,212 tonnes. Those to Moldova were down 9.3% to 1,501 tonnes and to Germany 6.9% to 770 tonnes.
Switzerland’s purchases were 3.6% lower at 341 tonnes.
Harvesting of the French walnut crop takes place in October. “This year we should about one week earlier than usual, as with all other fruits in the region. This is due to the weather conditions: we have had here with a lot of water until June and a lot of sun after that,” Bonnet explained.
This year’s volume is expected to reach around 36,000 tonnes, which would be about 10% down from the estimated 40,000 tonnes in 2017. This forecast downturn would be partly due to a lot of rain as this stops the blooming “at a certain point”, Bonnet noted.
Coopenoix’s own production is usually around 7,700 in-shell tonnes, 700 of which is organic, and 350 kernel tonnes.

“We prefer to manage large carry-over stocks to provide an excellent customer service and not to lose our position in the global market,” Jean Luc Jagueneau, president of France Prune told IEG Vu.
The new French prune crop is expected to reach 38,000 tonnes, according to the latest International Prune Association (IPA) forecast, released in May 2018. France enjoyed two good prune crops in 2016 and 2017, reaching 48,000 tonnes
and 50,000 tonnes, respectively, and a good average calibre: over 80% of the product was 68 counts per 500 grams. The yield reached 7.5 tonnes/ha in 2017, from 6.7 tonnes/ha in the previous year.
“We have enjoyed ideal weather trends in the last 28 months, compared with other geographical areas which are in better geographical latitudes, such as California or Chile,” Frank Hayer of Agen Prunes noted.
The 2017 and 2018 French prune crops were exceptional in volume and quality, driving to a record-high carry-over stock of above 50,000 tonnes to be faced in late 2018 and into 2019, when it could swell to 90,000 tonnes.

The French industry is the most northern international player and plums demand stable weather. “France has plenty of water, an advantage in the context of the stone fruit industry, using only irrigation systems as a complement to rain,” Jagueneau added. “On the other hand, there are three factors which obstruct the national industry’s competitiveness: a small average orchard size, which is around 9.7 hectares; the weather is often unstable for plum trees, which demand warm temperatures when they are blooming; and finally, the average tree age is high.”
“Trees younger than five years accounted for only 10.4% of the total. When a tree is older than 15 years its productivity starts to be unsteady. In addition, the average area must be larger. Our figure of 9.7 ha is not big enough to justify harvesters, essential in a country where the labour cost is very high, the current trend being to increase the area and to adapt the layout for the machines,” Jagueneau explained.
Prunes from AgenThe Protected Area (IGP) Agen Prune (Pruneau d’Agen) accounts for 95% of the national production. Prunes from Agen must be produced from fresh plums of the d’Ente variety, grown in the areas of Lot-et-Garonne, Dordogne, Gironde, Tarn-et-Garonne, Gers and Lot, in south-western France.
France was the world’s second biggest producer of prunes until the 2000s, when Chile overtook it. French prunes are not a cheap product and, unfortunately, price is essential to be competitive in a world’s market where growers with low production costs, such as Chile, Argentina, Serbia and South Africa, are expected to take 50.7% of the total 2018/19 crop, according to the IPA.
The French average export price was USD3,800 per tonne in 2017, almost double the US product and over three times more than the Chilean, according to GTT data.
The traditional markets for French prunes are the EU and North Africa. Its exported
volume totalled 7,757 tonnes in H1 2018, 15% less than in the same period in the previous year. Exported value declined by 18% to USD21.9 mln after Serbia and Argentina saw a revival of their crops, reaching 8,000 tonnes and around 50,000 tonnes, respectively.
However, the French industry may obtain help from California and Chile, which have forecast production falls. The 2018/19 Chilean crop is expecting to reach 71,000 tonnes, 2.7% less than in the previous season, and the Californian 68,000 tonnes, 28.4% less, according to IPA.

France last year imported 354,000 tonnes and EUR870.0 mln (USD1,011) worth of canned fish, canned vegetables and canned fruit.
Canned tuna was at the top of all canned goods to the country, sharing 28% of the total in volume and 53% in value.
Canned vegetables such as beans, asparagus, peas, artichokes, mushrooms and sweetcorn followed, together sharing 51% of the total volume imported and 31.8% of the total value.
Pineapple and peaches are the most relevant canned fruit varieties imported by the country.
Canned tunaSeychelles and Spain are the key suppliers to the French market for canned skipjack tuna, averaging 20,000 tonnes each per year; Ecuador and Ivory Coast imports
followed with 15,800 tonnes and 13,800 tonnes respectively; smaller amounts were delivered from Mauritius (8,700 tonnes) and Thailand (5,000 tonnes).
The price for canned tuna imports to France last year averaged EUR4,596 per tonne fob, up by 11% compared with the last two previous years.
Canned beansFrance last year imported 86,200 tonnes of prepared beans, making it the third market for canned beans in Europe after the UK (134,700 tonnes) and Germany (112,600 tonnes).
The Netherlands and Kenya are France’s key suppliers for canned beans, sharing 62% of total imports to the country. About 64% of Kenya’s prepared beans exports to Europe, which started in 2010, were delivered to France last year (19.000 tonnes).
With a stable import volume in the last decade, France is a major market for canned fish, canned fruit and canned vegetables within Europe.

The average price for canned beans paid by France last year was EUR1,247/tonne fob, up from last year’s EUR1,248/tonne.
Canned asparagusCanned asparagus exports to France last year were EUR49.0 mln worth, totalling 15,600 tonnes, of which 6,600 tonnes were imported from Peru, around 5,300 tonnes from China and a smaller amount from the major European asparagus producers Germany and Spain, with smaller crops than the first two and a domestic demand that leaves very little for exporting.
European canned asparagus volume for export has halved in a decade, from 20,000 tonnes exported in 2008 to 10,134 tonnes exported last year. Of that, Germany and France imported about 30% each last year,
Belgium and Denmark 20% each and smaller amounts went to Portugal.
The average price paid last year for canned asparagus imports from France was EUR3,150/tonne fob, Chinese price being EUR2,458/tonne; Spain EUR2,518/tonne; Germany EUR3,812/tonne and Peru EUR3,907/tonne.
Canned pineappleAbout 50% of all canned pineapple delivered to France last year was imported from Thailand with an average price of EUR1,199/tonne. Smaller amounts came from Indonesia, the Philippines or Kenya.
Thailand is the key canned pineapple exporter to Europe, sharing around 44% of the total volume per year. Last year, the EU28 imported 376,900 tonnes of canned pineapple, of which 163,500 tonnes were from Thailand, 72,500 tonnes from Indonesia, around 39,000 tonnes from Kenya and 35,600 tonnes from the Philippines.

NM: What are the most marked consumer trends that Gat has noticed in the last two years?
Gat Foods: The health & wellness trend has been rising for a few years now. The trend includes different focuses, with the focus on sugar reduction being the most prominent issue. Additional requirements are solutions for clean label, added minerals and vitamins and also superfruits drinks.
Gat Foods constantly monitors the market for major as well as niche consumer trends and develops the required solutions for all these sub trends. We provide our customers with easy to work with compounds and bases and accompany them in their specific application.
NM: What new flavours are becoming popular?
Gat Foods: As a citrus and pomegranate processor, most of our clients’ demands revolve around these flavours. However, we are witnessing a variety of flavours that are becoming popular, mainly as an added twist to mainstream ones.
In the past, ginger was a very popular flavour to be added to orange and lemon. Nowadays, we are asked to add ginger to pineapple. Mint is also
spreading into citrus and strawberry drinks, in addition to the classic lemon/mint flavours.
We are also witnessing drinks defined by colour: green (kiwi, green apple lulu), black (red berries, caramel) and red.
The Clear and Opaque contrast is also something to note. We have developed a series of clear drinks representing freshness and lightness alongside rich smoothies stressing naturalness and healthiness.
At SIAL, we will present drinks developed with the exotic ingredient of cocoa pulp, known for its antioxidants and fibres. We have developed a series of refreshing still drinks, on the one hand and a series of chocolate flavour desert drinks. We believe niche and exotic flavours represent a good opportunity for bottlers to stand out from the crowd and position themselves as innovators.
NM: How important are the trends towards clean production and sustainability, and in which countries are consumers taking the greatest interest in them?
Gat Foods: We put a lot of emphasis on sustainability efforts in the different production processes, waste management, electricity reduction, reduced water consumption and efficient recycling.
Our clients from Western Europe, and other global companies, already adhere to sustainability requirements due to the rising awareness of consumers, mainly from Nordic countries as well as Germany, France, the UK and Spain.
The soft drinks/juice drinks sector is changing fast. Neil Murray of IEG Vu quizzes one of the best-known market players, Gat Foods, in which direction is the market heading.

NM: What is Gat doing to address the problem of the ‘sugar scare’?
Gat Foods: The sugar scare is evidently present in the different beverage categories and Gat Foods has been focused on reducing sugar levels for some years now by developing specific sweetening formulations for specific beverage applications.
We have seen a gradual interest and demand for solutions to tackle the sugar issue by our clients, and that demand became more prominent during the two past years, not only from developed European markets but also from East Europe and Asia.
Gat Foods has developed and offers compounds and bases for fruity drinks suitable for the diet, low and reduced calories still drinks and carbonated categories.
We also provide solutions for tasty fruity water drinks with mild flavour and sweetness provided only from the fruit.
This whole spectrum of solutions provides consumers different ways to handle their sugar intake while not compromising on quality and taste.
At SIAL show, visitors are invited to taste our solutions for ‘sugar tax free’ drinks, containing less than five grams of sugar per 100ml.
NM: How much do you tailor products to individual markets, or is it a case of ‘one size fits all’?
Gat Foods: Our philosophy is based on a tailor-made approach.
As a small-medium sized company operating in the beverage market for more than 70 years, we have the advantage of established know-how coupled with a ‘personal touch’ of both approach and specific solutions for each client.
Our work with each client is based on specific briefs, taking into consideration not only specific market taste preferences and regulations, but also technological capabilities and desired marketing positioning.
Such processes may sometimes take longer than ready-made solutions but guarantee our customers with solutions that are ‘built to fit’ their needs, as our slogan says.
NM: We have noticed a move towards more use of fruit juice as an ingredient, often with water, to produce refreshing fruit drinks that are low-calorie. What are you doing here?
Gat Foods: Fruit juice is a very popular and tasty ingredient to mix with many categories. Since a few years now we have seen ‘hybrid’ beverages of juice together with tea, milk, beer, wine and water.
Lately, we developed a low sugar solution, providing a refreshing and tasty drink that avoids the sugar tax, containing 10% fruit juice with less than five grams sugar per 100ml. It is a new generation of fruity still drinks, with no preservatives, no artificial colors and no sweeteners.
We launched the product under our PRIGAT brand in the Israeli market and it was received with great enthusiasm.
We will show these concepts alongside many other drink concepts in the upcoming SIAL show. We invite you to taste and enjoy the drinks, taking into consideration we tailor each of our solutions to specific client needs.

According to the European Dairy Association, France has 1,200 cheeses, making it an undisputed Europe’s grand fromage. These are divided into different types, linked to distinctive French regions, including the climate, soil and culture. These include unripened cheeses, like fromage blanc and fromage frais; matured cheese, such as blue cheese, pressed cheese, goat’s cheese and washed-rind Epoisses cheese; as well as processed cheese and other cheese specialties, which are in line with the world trends.
As well, there are 45 French Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) for cheese, as well as nine Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs), making it one of the largest countries, along with Italy, with the
most protected cheeses. An average French person consumes around 27.2 kilos of cheese a year, according to the World Dairy Situation 2017.
France, part of the EU dairy Holy Trinity (Germany, France, the Netherlands), typically exports around 100,000 tonnes of cheeses to extra-EU markets. Although the Netherlands seemingly took the second-largest exporter title from France in volume terms last year, IEG Vu would like to clarify that Dutch exports volumes include a lot of other country re-exports via Rotterdam.
In 2017, French volumes reached 115,282 tonnes, up by only 1% from 2016 and were worth EUR690.1 million (USD780.6 mln) up 2%, despite 2017 being a hard year for the

EU’s dairy industry. Along with butter prices that had an upsurge to never-before-seen heights in autumn 2017, came the increases in other dairy fats, including cheese. Hence the larger increase of exports in value than in volume.
Last year’s cheese exports consisted of 5,872 tonnes of hard and semi-hard cheese and significantly less fresh cheese, which reached 19,979 tonnes and was the only category that grew compared with 2016. France’s main markets for cheese are the US (17% share), Switzerland (12%) and EU-wide main market Japan (10%).
Interestingly, France seems to be exporting more processed cheese than IEG Vu had anticipated, with it being the second-largest export category, at 28,875 tonnes.
Processed cheese, that has recently witnessed a demand boom in the Asia Pacific region, is used in the foodservice sector, as the local populations are becoming more and more accustomed to Western-style dining. The reach of French cheese exports spreads to Japan – main country in this category – Saudi Arabia, China, the US, Libya and Korea.French cheese exports by type (tonnes)

Policy change can have major impacts on the agri-food and bioenergy sectors, as well as on the overall macro economy. In the EU, policy makers must address the direct impact of Brexit as well as the shape of the Common Agricultural Policy post-2020. This will be impacted by the post-2020 EU budget agreement as the EU loses its second largest net contributor.
A host of policy issues – both directly and indirectly impacting agriculture – are being discussed around the world. These involve trade agreements, environmental regulations, climate change and renewable fuels/bioenergy, approach to GMOs.
There is considerable uncertainty about what the new agri-food and bioenergy policies might look like and what they may mean for businesses operating along the value chain. Are you prepared for these changes and how they will impact your business?
Informa’s Agribusiness Consulting provides agricultural policy and economic consulting services that can help you understand the impact of policy on your business. We offer a range of services, including:
