The grounds attract Scops Owl, Fan-tailed Warbler, Nightingale, Turtle Dove & Serin. Also visiting the “cultural” sights in Syracusa including Ortygia & the famous Parco Archaeologica. Plus Mount Etna including cable car and 4x4 vehicle drive through the lava field to the summit, looking for Golden Eagle, Firecrest, Wood Lark & Sicilian Coal Tit. Afternoon flight back to Gatwick. Birding Areas & Highlights Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers lots of excellent birdwatching, especially for migrants arriving from Africa along the SE coastal wetlands & headlands. The Headlands. Capo Murro di Porco attracts Northern & Black-eared Wheatear, Woodchat Shrike, Red-rumped Swallow & Subalpine Warbler, Lesser Kestrel & Red-footed Falcon. Stone-curlew & Calandra Lark breed at Penisola Magnisi promontory, with the nearby Riserva Naturale Saline di Priole attracting Greater Flamingos, Black-winged Stilt, passage waders & “marsh” terns. The Southern Lakes. Vendicari Lagoon hosts many waders inc. Little Stint & Curlew Sandpiper, Squacco Heron & Ferruginous Duck, with Slender-billed & Audouin’s Gulls found in the nearby Portopalo Harbour. Riserva Naturale Cava Grande. Inland lies this superb limestone gorge with stunning views, attracting Rock Sparrow, Blue Rock Thrush & Cirl Bunting, plus a variety of beautiful orchids.
