    26 Years of Service

August 2013In this still recovering economy, parents

continue to struggle with everyday needswhich include school supplies. The Execu-tive Board approved the Adopt A School

project which this year included Kipapaand Kahuku Elementary Schools.

With a population of 650 students, Ki- papa has 57% who fall into the needycategory. With that in mind, PrincipalCorinne Yogi, had asked the teachers tonot include disinfectant wipes and paper towels on their list. These were furnished along with another priority item-flutophones.

SICO was invited to help distribute thesupplies along with other community ser-vice clubs.

At Kahuku Elementary, two of the more priority needs included white board erasersand markers and sheet protectors. PrincipalMrs. Masaniai was caught a bit off guard

by our call to help her students so thesewere off the top of her head.

Each school also received crayons, pen-cils, colored pencils, folder paper, scissors,

portfolios, and a host of other supplies.Donation date at Kahuku will be on Fri-

day, August 2nd at 10:00 am. Mrs. Ma-saniai was just grateful to be remembered.

    ONE NIGHT IN ROME

Saturday, August 24, 2013Pomaikai Ballroom, formerly Dole Ballrooms

At first, a bit reluctant to talk much about her trip to Peru,

Susan Lau shared an amazing adventure.Of course, visiting Machu Picchu was the highlight of the

trip. The tour group traveled from Cuzco to an area fromwhich they had to hike to Machu Picchu. It was breathtaking, literally and visually.

They also visited the Nazca Lines by airplane with itsamazingly huge outlines of several animals. Susan was verynearly becoming air sick by the swooping plane as it raced across the desert to view all the lines drawn by ancient peo-

    ple.

At Lake Titicaca, the largest freshwater lake in the world,

high up in the Andes, they learned of a people who live onreed islands in the lake. The reeds are piled up to form littleislands on which the people live. Every three months, theislands have to be rebuilt with more reeds that are cut byhand.

As the group sat on logs on the lake shore, Susan was cap-tured by the contrast of the primitive lifestyle and the touristswith their high tech iPads, iPhones and cameras.

She is grateful to live in Hawaii and America.

    Susans Great Adventure

Most of the tickets are sold for SICOs biggest fundraiser of the year! As soon as Chair Lyn Lurbe put out her email, the replies came in fast and furious. If you have not yet purchased your ticket, be sure to give Lyn a call or email her.

Silent auction items are pure profit for SICO so lets get going and get those items, gift certificates, etc. The date isalmost upon us. Only a few short weeks before the event. Lyn can be reached at [email protected] or 277-7690.
