Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Sid & Mary Foulger International Music Festival & Concerto Competition for Strings and Piano. It is especially gratifying to introduce this exciting program to the community where I grew up, and at the school that gave me my start. I began my formal education at Weber College in 1939 and will never forget the kindness shown to me by President H. Aldous Dixon who took a personal interest in me and nurtured my dream of becoming a mechanical engineer. Today that same individualized, one-on-one faculty–student interaction remains a Weber State hallmark.

!e great Greek scholar and philosopher Plato wrote, “Musical training is a more potent instrument that any other, because rhythm and harmony #nd their way into the inward places of the soul, on which they mightily fasten, imparting grace, and making the soul of him who is rightly educated, graceful.”

As a youth in Ogden, Utah during the Great Depression, I knew that my family was struggling to make ends meet. With little spare money for luxuries, my parents nevertheless arranged for me to take piano lessons, and I trace my lifelong love of music to that treasured childhood experience.

Before she passed away, my dear wife, Mary, and I shared a love of music. Whenever we were in a position to do so, we devoted time, energy and resources to promoting music education in the U.S. and abroad. It is an e"ort that was, and still is, very close to my heart.

In the spring of 2012, I met a remarkable student pianist from Taiwan, Fan-Ya Lin, who came to this country to study with Dr. Yu-Jane Yang at Weber State University. I was so impressed with Fan-Ya’s 'awless musical interpretation and impeccable technique that I vowed to help the university expand its already stellar music program. It was my desire to establish a world-class summer music festival in the heart of the majestic Wasatch Mountains—one that would challenge aspiring professionals and help them mature. !e SMF International Music Festival exposes participants to an internationally renowned music faculty and provides an unparalleled educational opportunity.

Good music elevates us above everyday life. I #rmly believe in its transformative power and en-courage everyone to support !e SMF International Music Festival at Weber State University as it strives to prepare promising young musicians for careers in the performing arts. It is a pleasure and a privilege to be part of this outstanding endeavor.

Sincerely,

Sid W. FoulgerSponsor of the Sid & Mary Foulger International Music Festival & Competition
