the United natiOns system at the FOReFROnt OF eFFORts tO addRess cLimate change
As a unique international mechanism with universal membership that combines convening power, normative work, standard-setting, policy development and operational activities, the United Nations system in its entirety has embarked on an action-oriented and coordinated effort to support the international community in addressing the climate change challenge. Through close coordination of all relevant agencies, a clear framework for action has been established with priority areas for the achievement of early results. Agencies contribute on the basis of their respective areas of expertise, mandates issued by their governing bodies and resources made available to them. The overall objective is to maximize existing
synergies, eliminate duplication and overlap, and optimize the impact of the collective efforts of the United Nations system.
The breadth and unity of United Nations system activities are reflected in 20 side events at the COP15/CMP 5. Each of these events has a thematic focus and involves a number of agencies, which come together to present their work under the same theme.
The side events presented by the United Nations system cover a wide range of issues. The common thread is that the United Nations system stands ready to support action at all levels, from global to regional, national and local, given the urgent need to accelerate action on adaptation and mitigation, including through technology transfer, finance and capacity-building.

iSeeT exhibiT at the Climate Change kiosk
The 2009 exhibition of the UNFCCC secretariat is focused on how information and communication technologies (ICTs) are helping to increase awareness and to support concrete action on climate change in both developing and developed countries.
The exhibition tells stories about current ICT-related projects undertaken by governments, United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations, nongovernmental organizations and media organizations on their own or with private sector partners. Among the over 100 contributing governments, United Nations and NGO institutions and organizations is the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) that has prepared a special programme of daily “business talks” by leaders in the ICT sector from both developing and developed countries.
iSeeT at the kiosk will be in operation from 7-18 December from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. Demonstrations take place in 4 thematic areas focused on ICTs for decision-making, outreach, collaboration and capacity building. Presentations will complement the programme both on-site and off-site using “TelePresence” technology in a central area. This exhibition is made possible through the support and cooperation of the government of Denmark and its COP15 sponsor, Cisco Systems, Inc.

Enjoy healthy foodSustainability is one of the main focal points when it comes to providing adequate and satisfactory catering at COP15. Besides ensuring healthy, tasty, and reasonably priced food, Denmark has chosen to guarantee a minimum of 65% organic food and beverages at the conference – also including fair-trade products such as coffee and tea. Make a healthy and green choice when buying food. Vegetables are more sustainable and environmentally friendly than meat.
Enjoy fresh water for freeThe quality of water from all taps in Denmark and Sweden matches at minimum the standard of bottled water – in fact, it is better. By drinking tap water you help to reduce waste from empty bottles and save energy used for production and transportation. Last but not least, it will save you money. Refill your bottle at the tap or any tap water station at Bella Center. Any questions about sustainability? Ask the Green Team!Do you have questions or comments concerning COP15’s sustainable organization? We – employees of the Danish Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Climate and Energy – would like to hear your comments and questions. Please feel free to contact any member of the COP15 Green Team present at Bella Center. They are easily recognizable – wearing the official COP15 Green Team polo-shirts.
