This year, Mexico is celebrating both its bicentennial and centennial. It has been 200 years since its declaration of Independence from Spain, and 100 years since the end of a brutal internal revolution that ended the 30 year dictatorial reign of Porfirio Díaz… both major seminal events in the rich history of Mexico.

The Asociación de Empresarios Mexicanos (AEM), a San Antonio Association established 14 years ago as a bridge for Mexicans emigrating to San Antonio, in partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of San Antonio, are joining forces to produce a major event involving the San Antonio Symphony and a series of internationally recognized guest artists from Mexico.

The Project

The MusicThe San Antonio Symphony, with its world-class musicians, will play a one-night concert of histo-ric and contemporary Mexican music joined by internationally recognized singers and musicians from Mexico.

The richness of a highly respected Symphonic Or-chestra performing their magic side by side with internationally recognized Mexican artists who bring the soul of the golden age of Mexican mu-sic to the stage will leave all who attend with a night surely to be remembered for a long time.

The dates for the Symphony orchestra have been reserved, and we are currently working with various artistic producers in Mexico to de-termine the proper mix of music along with the availability of artists.

We are anticipating using one of the greatest sin-gers in Mexico, Don Pedro Vargas, as a center-piece for the evening. Pedro Vargas is unquestio-nably one of the most well-known and beloved singers in the history of Mexico. Unfortunately, he

left us several years ago, however, the scope of his music lives on and is widely recognized on a global scale, having performed with every ma-jor artist of his time, including Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner and many others.

A gala performance will be produced around rich and traditional Mexican music from the 60’s and 70’s, a golden era of music in that country. Wrapped around this tradition, a mix of contem-porary songs and artists of today will be added.

The intent is to produce a musical extravagan-za with many bridges…. a bridge between the rich cultural heritage of Mexico and the United States; a bridge between the strong ties that bind San Antonio, South Texas and the people of Mexico; and a bridge that celebrates the powerful traditional and contemporary musical interests of both countries.

A musical journey will be built around many major artists Mexico has enjoyed since the Revolution. Internationally recognized singers from Mexico will be invited to interpret the excellent and timeless compositions of artists such as Agustín Lara, Armando Manzanero, Álvaro Carrillo, Roberto Cantoral, José and Alfredo Jiménez among others.

The music will be complemented with a multi-media presentation that will provide a visual journey through some of the most difficult yet most exciting times in Mexico’s history.

Marketing and promotionMarketing and promotional consideration will be strongest in the San Antonio and south Texas markets, however, promotional work will also be considered in the ma-jor markets of Austin, Houston, Dallas as well as northern Mexico, including Saltillo, Monterrey, and possibly Guadalajara.

The cost of this entire project will be covered through sponsorships and ticket sales. All re-maining monies after direct expenses will be presented to the San Antonio Symphony as a donation towards their Educational Outreach Programs in the community.

The San Antonio Symphony has brought music educational programs to the schoolchildren of San Antonio for 65 years. Last season, we introduced over 40,000 youth to the power of live orchestral music. We want every child and family member to receive a deeper appre-ciation and understanding about music and the benefit it can have in their lives. These pro-grams provide the impetus needed to get chil-dren involved in music throughout their aca-demic and professional development.

The Symphony offers several programs that will be benefited by this concert:

Family Series for families with small children, held on Sunday afternoons with pre-concert activities such as instrument making, conduc-ting workshops, and instrument petting zoo.

The Young People’s Concerts for 3rd-5th grade students, designed to meet the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills objectives in

music and a core subject. This season we ex-plore music’s role in the shaping of history.

Music Matters!a scholarship fund that provi-des transportation and tickets to Title 1 and low-income schools to attend our many educatio-nal concerts and world-class performances.

Community Engagement ranges from in-classroom performances to educational workshops at local schools and nonprofit or-ganizations.

AT&T Music Scholars program brings musicians into Edgewood Academy, La-nier and Highlands High Schools music de-partments to mentor students with private and group instruction. Symphony musicians and high school music students come together for end-of-term collaborative performances that are open for the whole community.

St. Philip’s College Residency a weeklong residency full of workshops and performances at San Antonio’s designated Historically Black College and Hispanic-serving Institution.

The family of Pedro Vargas, through his son Alejandro, has gra-

ciously offered to donate a bronze bust of the world-renowned

artist to the city of San Antonio.

Pedro Vargas was one of the most prolific international singers

of his generation. In addition to working with all the major

stars of Mexico such as Agustín Lara and María Félix, he sang and

acted with critically acclaimed artists such as Julio Iglesias, Ava

Gardner, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Additionally, he has a

long list of films international credits, including several impor-

tant roles working directly with Walt Disney.

Also under discussion… it is possible a major friend of Pedro Var-

gas, such as Julio Iglesias or Roberto Carlos, will attend the un-

veiling of this bust.

This is but another event surrounding this concert that would

serve to commemorate the strong history of Mexico, the streng-

th of its music, and the exceptional ties that exist

between our two cultures.

Manuel mijaresManuel Mijares (born José Manuel Mijares Morán on February 7, 1958 in Mexico City, is a popular Spanish-language singer who is billed simply as “Mijares.” He launched his career at age 23. He is married to singer/actress Lucero, with whom he has two children.

In 2000, DreamWorks selected Mijares to perform three songs by Elton John in Spanish for El Dorado. This same year he re-leased Historias de un Amor, in which he co-wrote some of the songs. Mijares’ 2004 album, Cappuccino, was highlighted by a duet with Canadian singer-songwriter Gino Vannelli. In 2005, Mijares released Honor a Quien Honor Merece, a tribute to Mexican star José José, whom he considers one of his main influences. The album received gold and platinum certifica-tion in Mexico. Also successful was Acompañame, a duet al-

bum with Yuri that achieved platinum certification in 2006. His 2008 album Hablemos de Amor performed well on the charts, powered by the hit “Te ha robado”, which was the theme from the telenovela Querida Enemiga.

The following year, Mijares moved to Warner Music Latina for the album Vivir Así. The disc reached No. 2 on the official Amprofon lists and spent more than two months in the top 10. It was certified Gold during its eighth week of release and received platinum certification a few weeks later. A sequel, Vivir Así Volumen II, was released on April 13, 2010; the album reached the top 10 and earned Gold certification.

AIDA CUEVASAida Cuevas (born September 24, 1963) is a Mexican singer and actress also known as “The Queen of Ranchera”. She began singing in amateur contests at the age of 11. Her first national exposure was on a weekly live radio program called “El Taller XEW” in 1975 at the age of twelve. In 1977 she perfor-med in Europe; this was the start of many international perfor-mances that would soon establish her as the “Ambassador of Mexican Music”.

She has released 27 albums and has won numerous awards including a Grammy Award. Her unique voice and style have allowed her to cultivate a successful and long lasting career, leaving a remarkable imprint in the history of Latin Music. She has been nominated for three Latin Grammy awards and has received her first Grammy Award for “Enhorabuena” relea-sed in 2002; produced by Bebu Silvetti.

YURIYuri (born Yuridia Valenzuela Canseco) has maintained a sig-nificant presence in the entertainment business in Mexico for the last three decades. Born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, she moved to Mexico City in 1977, to pursue a career in enter-tainment.

In February 2007, Yuri recorded a live show at the Metropolitan Theatre in Mexico City that has been released as a CD/DVD. The album set that was produced from that concert titled “Yuri: Vive La Historia” reached platinum in Mexico despite minimum

promotion. In January 2008, Yuri was asked to host the Televisa series Noche de Estrellas. She has used this forum to continue to promote her career by performing with current and past Latin music icons like: Lupita D’Alessio, Enrique Iglesias, Emmanuel, and Juanes. Later that year, Yuri released her new album Mi Hijita Linda.

From February 14 to March 26 of 2009 she sold out concerts in the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. In July 2009, Yuri announ-ced that she would become mother to a seven month old little girl, named Camila, that she adopted.

CRISTIAN CASTROCristian Castro is the son of renowned actress and singer Ma-nuel “El Loco” Valdes. Castro also has a younger brother na-med Michelle Sáinz Castro, his uncle is José Alberto “el Guero” Castro and his aunt is Beatriz Castro, who both are producers. As a baby, he made his acting debut with her during the tele-novela named El Derecho de Nacer. Soon after, he appea-red on a television commercial with her, and on the Mexican version of the broadway show Mame alongside the promi-nent actress Silvia Pinal. Castro is one of the best selling Latin artists and has worked with renown Latin producers including Kike Santander, Rudy Perez, and Richard Daniel Roman.

Castro began his singing career in 1992 with the release of Agua Nueva. After participating in various telenovelas and recording some albums as a teenager, Castro began his “internationalization” in 1993, starting with concerts in Puerto Rico. He also modified his singing voice from the deep voi-ce he employed in Agua Nueva to a softer one that he cu-rrently uses. His song, Nunca Voy a Olvidarte , became his first number-one hit at the Hot Latin Tracks charts in 1993 helped launched his career. Castro became an international teen idol and sex symbol almost instantly after he began touring, and he began what has been a fructiferous international sin-ging career.

CARLOS CUEVAS

The brother of Aida Cuevas, the “queen of the ranchera”, Carlos Cuevas has been equally successful as an interpreter of the bolero, a Spanish dance style similar to the rhumba. The recipient of a “best male interpreter” award at Mexico’s Festival OTI in 1989, Cuevas continues to be one of Mexico’s truly gifted artists.

While the sounds of Mexico remain the foundation of his mu-sic, Cuevas has ventured far afield for ear-catching material. His album, Recopilatorio: 1996 -- 1998 features interpretations of two pieces by British composer/keyboardist Mike Oldfield. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

GERARDO FLORESIn 2007, lovers and connoisseurs of good music had a lot of material to choose from in one single CD titled “Junto A Ti”, from Gerardo Flores.

The recognized musical director of the TV show “Don Fran-cisco Presenta” of Univision, made his debut singing lyrics of his own inspiration. With a musical career that includes many years and

many hits, Gerardo, brother of singer Laura Flores, chose 2007 as the best time to launch himself as a singer.

In “Junto A Ti” his first production, Flores adds that his songs were inspired, one way or another, by his private life. His wife,

Patricia, with whom he has been married for two happy de-cades, was his muse to the song “Para los Dos”, while his chil-dren Gerardo Jr. and Alexis, were the reason to write “El Hijo que Soñé“ and “La Ley del Amor”.

The composer, producer and musical director who lives in San Antonio, Texas, has worked with important artists such as Luis Miguel, Conjunto Primavera, Tito Nieves, Lucero and Mija-res, among others.

LAURA FLORESLaura Flores is a Mexican actress, hostess and singer, born in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Laura Flores had a hit single for her telenovela, a grammy win-ning single “El Alma No Tiene Color, a duet with Marco Anto-nio Solis. Her first taste of stardom came when she joined Her-manos y Amigos, a group that travelled extensively in Mexico, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain for almost three years. Her first acting opportunity came during a musical presenta-tion in Tampico, where a producer offered her a role in the telenovela El Combate, starring Ignacio López Tarso.

She has participated in important soap operas such as Los Años Pasan, Clarisa, El Vuelo del Águila, Marisol, El Amor Tiene Cara de Mujer, El Alma No Tiene Color, Gotita de Amor and Siempre te Amaré. In the year of 2005, after a temporary de-parture, she returned to the acting scene, starring in Piel de Otoño.

In 2008, she left the program Hoy to star in a new telenovela, En Nombre del Amor as Camila Ríos, the mother of the villain.

FRANCISCO CÉSPEDESCuban-born singer/songwriter Francisco Céspedes left his phy-sician career to get involved in popular music.

The talented artist decided to stay in Mexico while visiting the country along with the Cuban Modern Music Orquestra. In 1992, Luis Miguel recorded his songs “Pensar En Ti,” featured on his album Aries, and “Que Tu Te Vas,” on Nada Es Igual, which were good enough to captivate the attention of Warner Mu-sic. In 1997, Francisco Céspedes participated in Viña del Mar

Festival, representing Mexico with “Hablo de Ti” and issuing his debut album, Vida Loca, that same year. In 1998, the singer and composer joined Presuntos Implicados, recording “Nadie Como Tú.” Later, Céspedes made Donde Esta La Vida, recor-ded in Mexico and the U.S., produced by Juan Carlos Paz y Puente.

EDITH MÁRQUEZEdith Márquez Mexican actress and singer who started her professional career by winning the television mu-sical contests “Juguemos a cantar” (1978) and “Canta, Canta” (1984).

She later attended some courses in the Artistic Educational Training Centre of Televisa and she was a member of the musical band Timbiriche.

She has taken part in several soap operas and she represented Mexico in 2001 Viña del Mar International Song Festival.
