President’s message

Brrrr! Having a preference for warm weather, I am tucked

into my layers and huddling indoors a lot. Little inspires

me of what winter brings, but I must admit the freezing fog

has provoked some interesting thoughts. How would I go

about creating the sparkle of the frosty tree branches just

as the sun begins to break through the fog? How about the

ice that has gathered at the edge of the river? The geese

huddled on a nearby rock, or taking to the sky in search of

a likely feeding spot (why did they not go farther south this

year?). There is really a lot to inspire and get those

creative juices flowing. The more I paint, the warmer I

feel. And spring is hovering out there getting ready to

break through, I hope.

Congratulations to all of the brave souls who conquered the

black ice to attend the January meeting! Most of us found

that once we managed to get out of our own

neighborhoods, the roads were clear and dry. We thank

Don Fotine, who bravely came up from the Gardnerville

area to give a wonderful demonstration including valuable

tips about underpainting.

At the last Board Meeting, considerable discussion was

directed to exhibits and how to make entry day run more

smoothly. The Standing Rules for Exhibits were also

discussed at length. Since exhibits are such a major part of

our SWS purpose, more discussion will be devoted to this

subject at the next board meeting. All members are

welcome to attend the board meetings, and I would

encourage your participation at the next meeting on

February 23.

March Challenge

This differs from most as it requires the use of the 5 x 7

gessoed hardboard from the Richeson Co. that was handed

out at the January meeting. The subject is entirely up to

you. Anyone who did not get a board at the January

meeting, can call me to get one. We have a few left. My

number is 925-640-1156.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Workshop and Meeting Location Change: Beginning in March,

SWS will be using Temple Sinai as our venue for general

meetings and workshops. The address is 3405 Gulling Rd.,

Judged Exhibit Change: The judged show has been changed

to the Winter Exhibit time at the May Museum. There were

that we were able to use at the museum. With the change of

time, we will be using the gallery room, a much more secure

site that will not require volunteers to man the exhibit. Our

most impressive work will be hung for at least a month, and

we will use the December holiday party as our artists'

reception. The board also voted to discontinue showing during

the Balloon Races.

Membership Dues & Exhibits: Starting with the next exhibit,

entrants will have had to be a paid member at least one

month prior to the entry date. The board voted to make this

change to eliminate the backup caused at entry day by

members who have not paid their dues. This will become part

of our Standing Rules for exhibits.

Framing Mini-Workshops: Vicki Curwen will be presenting a

miniseries of framing procedures during the lunch break at the

next few general meetings. Whether you are a novice or an

skills to conform with expectations in the fine art community.

Elissa Slanger’s film “Evelyn” about her elderly cousin, Evelyn Brenner, a prominent Brooklyn artist, has been chosen to be

screened at the Sebastapol (Sonoma County, CA) Documentary Film Festival March 21-24. Elissa conceived, wrote, co-

produced and co-directed this 27-minute film in addition to doing the interviewing in order to preserve the legacy of this

remarkable artist.

Judy Berman won first in the January challenge with Vicki Curwin coming in

second. Also below is Don Fotine during his demonstration at the January

meeting.

New member Linda Parisi is having a show of her watercolors at

Local Color Gallery, 1606 Pike Place, Seattle WA during February &

the January issue of Senior Sunset Times (Seattle).

At the Crocker Art Museum are Sherry

Temporary gallery space has opened up at Gallery 3 Art

in downtown Reno. This is called the Pop-Up Gallery and

it’s located at 3 N. Virginia St. The gallery is of

professional standard with insurance, good lighting and

security. Spaces can be rented for as short a time as 2

days and up to 2 weeks or more, which is why this

arrangement is referred to as “pop-up. ” For more

information, phone Vicki Colodny at 230-7333 or email

Z Miller switched from mortgage banking to

floral watercolors 10 years ago to mesh with

her long-standing interest in botany. She

has been represented in numerous local and

national shows and won the prestigious

Georgia O’Keeffe award in 2008.

SWS needs you to write a short bio of yourself to place next to your name at exhibits in order to help the public understand

who we are. I have written a couple of these to use as models which you easily can improve on. A small picture could also

be provided. What you use as contact information, if any, is up to you. Please email or mail them to Nancy Gunderson.

X Jones began studying watercolor seriously in 2001 with

artist Y Smith, who inspired him to become a portrait artist.

He has since won numerous awards in local & national shows

and served as President of SWS in 2005-6. Previous to

retirement he worked as an art instructor & private

detective. [website/email if you wish to be contacted]

Jeannie McGuire is an exciting figurative artist who uses strong, impressionistic paintings of people to illuminate their personalities. She has a background in graphic design, photography, and fine art. She exhibits in regional and international shows and has won numerous awards, including the American Watercolor Society's 2011 Gold Medal of Honor and the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society's 2010 and 2011 Best of Show. She states, "My creative paintings are impressionistic original pieces of art with identifiable subjects versus a traditional portrait. For those that prefer a more realistic look, my style lends a fresh

feeling to portraits and full figures."

This 4-day workshop promises to be exciting and challenging. Visit Jeannie's website at

www.jeanniedmcguire.com to see examples of her beautiful work.

Andrews Landscape Workshop Emphasizes Color

This workshop will be packed with demonstrations, discussions, individual help, and personal and group critiques. Visit Don’s website at www.donandrews.net to learn more about the artist and see examples of his work. Be sure to come to the March 9 meeting, bring your lunch,
