   Worthy Commander’s Note I hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying the time with their family and friends.  I wanted to remind everyone that our Eta Mu Annual meeting is quickly approaching in a couple months on September 11th at the chapter house.  This meeting corresponds with the GMI/Kettering Alumni events and is a time for all of the HM Alumni and Active members to reconnect with friends and brothers. 

This event also allows the Housing Corporation and Alumni Association officers to communicate directly with the Alumni as a whole and get feedback on ideas and plans we would like to put into place to ensure the future of the chapter.  

We are still working on the agenda for the event but the official meeting time at the house will correspond with the Kettering Alumni day open house time from 2‐4 PM at the chapter house.  More details will be posted on our Alumni Chapter Website at:  http://www.deltachirho.com 

If the Alumni Association is to be successful, we need the input and involvement of all alumni.  Whether you can come to the annual meeting in September or not, you can contribute to that success by being an active alumni member.  This could include serving on the board, contacting alumni in your local area, or just offering suggestions and ideas.  We all have a stake in ensuring that the chapter remains strong and the house and grounds are kept in good condition. 

This year’s Annual meeting is even more important as ALL of the positions in both the Alumni Chapter and the Housing Corporation are up for election.  We started both the Housing Corp and the Alumni Association with a small group of concerned alumni to try and reorganize the alumni base and reconnect with the active chapter.  Now is the time to grow that small group in this year’s election.  In order to move our group to the next level we need to infuse it with new blood.  This would allow us to expand on what we can do to include more social events which I know the Alumni base is looking for. 

As always my main goal is to keep everyone informed about what is happening at the house and get as many Alumni involved with the chapter as possible.  Please contact me or any of the other officers if you have any questions or feedback.  I look forward to seeing all of you on the 11th of September.

Sigma Nu    Delta Chi Rho

   The Dane Miller Challenge On March 28th about 20 alumni and active members met up in the Campus Center and set to work calling every past Sigma Nu and Delta Chi Rho member. The “telethon” lasted for about four hours and we were able to reach about a third of alumni. The event was successful but unfortunately we did not meet our goal. For those who pledged, THANK YOU. 

I would also like to personally thank: Tom Plotkowski, Scott Snider, Ivan Sears, Jim Thomas, Kevin Marion, Mark Kosowski, Robert Marias, Nick Roggenbuck, Paul Ramey, Mike Burke, Zach Tunison, Zach Paruk, Tom Witte, Andy Giacobone, Gary Gumushian, Bob Mott, Lars Pearson, Justin Arnold, Jim Hutchinson, Jon Connel, Bob Graban, and (at the time, a pledge) Dan Rodriguez, for taking the time Sunday to make over 700 phone calls. 

To date we have received or been pledged $24,000.18 which means we are still below our goal by $25,999.82 The goal was set by brother Dane Miller HM127 last September and has been dubbed “The Dane Miller Challenge”. 

He will match any donation towards the house between September 2009 and September 2010, up to $50,000. All money will be directed towards a large overhaul to update the house. The first priority is the replacement of the roof, then replacement of all windows (which are not energy efficient), then replacement of the siding, and 

then some large foundation repairs. The house is nearing 100 years and it is in need of this large overhaul.

   A History of Eta Mu ‐ by Jim Thomas HM101  

When the housing corporation was formed, I came into possession of some of the legal documents of the fraternity.  Among the papers was a title search that was done on the property in the mid 1960’s.  After looking through it I thought it would be interesting and informative to track the history of the property and find out about the people who had owned it.  My wife, Jeanne, is a trained genealogist so I wasn’t going into this completely blind. 

The historical sign on our property tells about the original owner, Rufus Harrison, who is credited as the first white settler in Flushing Township.  We were able to find the original land patent from the Federal Government that he obtained to buy the property in 1835.  We have begun to trace his family history and I will write more about him in future articles.  

For this article we will focus on Murray J. Dailey, from whose widow Delta Chi Rho purchased the property on a land contract in 1956.  To look for information about Dailey, I started with the Flint City Directories at the Flint Public Library. 

City Directories were published each year and contained the names and addresses of residents and businesses.  They did not include phone numbers, but in many cases did give the occupation or business of the person.  The entries are cross‐referenced by street name so that you could look up an address and see what business or individual resided there. 

Murray Dailey first appears in the directories in 1923 and 1924 as a contractor.  In ’25 and ’26 he has a restaurant, first on Ravine and then on Cadillac.  Google maps can’t find Ravine and it does not show up on any Flint city maps, but Cadillac is one block east of Chevrolet.  The restaurant was near the corner of Bluff St.  Bluff is one block south of University (Third Avenue).  In 1926 he also is listed as owning a filling station on Bluff, just around the corner from the restaurant.  The restaurant disappears from the listings the next year, but the filling station is listed until 1931. 

The 1929 and 1930 directories also connect him to a “Drive‐Away Service”, also located on Bluff St.  In 1932 that business becomes Anchor Motor Freight, Inc at the same address with Dailey listed as Vice President and General Manager.  Their business was car hauling and their only client was General Motors.  Anchor became affiliated with Superior Transfer which later became Leaseway.  In 1964 Leaseway merged with Penske Trucking. (Continued on next page.)   

  

Sigma Nu    Delta Chi Rho Dailey is listed as V‐P, Gen’l Mgr at Anchor through 1939 and again in 1945.  My efforts to learn more about Anchor have been unsuccessful.  Did he own the company?  If so, why was he vice president?  Who was president?  It has been said that he invented the double deck car hauler, but a search of the U.S. Patent Office records does not show any patents granted.   

The title search shows that he acquired the property at 7023 Flushing Road in 1929, but the City Directory of 1939 lists his residence as 2020 Flushing Road, which is near Ballenger Park.  1945 is the first listing that shows he is living at 7023 Flushing Rd.  Again more questions.  Did he build the house and when?  Did the Depression have anything to do with where he lived?  In any case, he died in September 1945 and his widow continued to live there until selling the property in 1956.  During the 50’s she is listed in the directories as having an interest in (possibly co‐owner) of Underwood Drugs on E. Court St. near Dort Hwy. 

Searches like this always turn up interesting bits of information you don’t expect.  For example, Rufus Harrison’s wife, Sarah Sawyer, came from Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York.  It turns out I have a great, great, great grandfather named Thomas Sawyer who also came from the same area and was born within a few years of Sarah.  Am I related to her?  Don’t know, yet.  More to follow.

   A‐Section Report ‐ Zach Tunison HM654 A‐section had a good winter semester, starting off its first weekend; we helped with Kettering's Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, assisting disadvantaged middle school students from the surrounding area as they rotated through several stations designed to show a variety of Kettering's scholastic opportunities. Later in the term, we initiated our newest member, Daniel Rodriguez, who is now 

our new Lieutenant Commander.  

During the term, Solarium was sanded and repainted after the paint started flaking. Work on maids annex and removing its pillars was also begun. In our summer term, we will be heavily focused on recruiting new men of honor.

   B‐Section Interview ‐ Cedrick Fadiga Cedrick is an active member of the Eta Mu chapter and is due to graduate in 2013.  He is working towards an Electrical Engineering degree and his pin is HM665. 

How would you like to be remembered?  The guy that was always ready to go. 

What hobbies do you have?  I absolutely love reading‐‐I run through more books, magazines, articles and entire encyclopedias in a month than most will in a year or two. Between naps, of course. 

What are your short/long term goals?  What I'm really working toward is being a major player in the defense industry and getting a DARPA contract‐‐but getting there isn't happening until I get my Micros homework done. 

What do you think you will be doing in 5 years?  10 years?  I'm doing what I can to make sure that 5 years from now sees me working on directed energy weapons. And in 10 even bigger directed energy weapons. 

Who is your Big Brother?  Mike Burke 

 How would you describe a typical day at the Fraternity House?  You can tell when classes are over because the pall hanging over everyone all day just lifts away. This usually happens around dinner, at which point we just keep each other company and do things we find entertaining for a bit before people trail off into homework. 

What is your favorite charity event at Sigma Nu?  I like the Eisenhower Christmas party. I like little kids; they're an energetic and all‐around fun bunch. 

What was your favorite recruitment event at Sigma Nu?  Who doesn't like a barbecue? Anything with burgers is good in my book. but not better than Pizza Night. NOTHING'S better than Pizza Night. 

What is your favorite tradition at Sigma Nu?  Ponding. Hilarious to watch, but I definitely never want to be the guy thrown in. 

During Recruitment, what qualities do you look for in a potential Candidate? Love, Honor, and Truth. If you can enjoy other people's company and vice versa, have an agreeable set of principles and keep away from fibbing too much, you've caught my interest. 

What brother helped you the most while at Kettering?  Michael Burke!

   Website News ‐ by Scott Snider HM427 As you may know we have had a website dedicated to the alumni of Sigma Nu Eta Mu chapter and Delta Chi Rho for several years. In this letter I would like to tell you about a couple of features. Visit us at www.DeltaChiRho.com 

The first feature is the alumni address book. This web based address book has the latest address, phone number and email address of each alumnus that we have on 

record. This is a great way to reconnect with your brothers who you may have not talked to in years and the first step to rekindle old friendships. We try to make sure we keep the address book as updated as possible, but if you notice out of date information please share with us.  

Please note that we believe in protecting your information and in addition to having to log in to the main website to even see the link for the address book you must also log in to the address book application to be able to see the addresses. If you do not have a login ID or have forgotten your password you may use the password recovery feature that will send the password to the email address we have on file or you can simply send an email to the webmaster at sentinel@deltachirho.com to ask for help.  

I hope you enjoy reaching out and connect to your brothers.  

When you enter the members’ only section of the website you will be greeted with the front page news, calendar and other menu items (if you login then you will be presented with more choices such as the address book). We would love to hear how our brothers are doing and the Front Page news is a great way to do this. What have you done since leaving GMI/Kettering? What good is happening? Got a new Job? New child/grandchild/great grandchild? Passed a major milestone? Crossed something off your bucket list? The sky is the limit.  

All you have to do is click on the submit news link near the top of the website and write your story. After you submit your story it will be held in a queue for review. We do this to keep spammers from hitting our front page with useless junk. We promise to have it posted as soon as possible (sometimes the webmaster is traveling internationally so the occasional delay is possible).
