TO: Prospective Youth Court Members DATE: September 9, 2015 RE: Mat-Su Youth Court Criminal Law Training Course The next Mat-Su Youth Court Criminal Law Training Course is scheduled for Monday, October 26, 2015 through Friday, October 30, 2015, with the swearing-in ceremony the following week. Classes will be held each day from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and students must attend all five classes. Classes will be held at the Palmer Courthouse in the jury selection room. The courthouse is located at 435 South Denali Street in Palmer. Security at the courthouse will provide direction to the jury room. Local attorneys will teach the classes, which will culminate with a bar exam on Friday. Graduates will be sworn in by a Judge at the Palmer District Courthouse and will become members of the Mat-Su Youth Court Bar Association. To attend this class session, students need to be in grades 9-12, live in the Mat-Su Borough, and have no criminal charges pending. A member must also commit to being active in the Mat-Su Youth Court. This will require attendance at a monthly student bar meeting and participation in court proceedings at least once a month. When members have volunteered 94 hours, they can receive one-half of a high school credit as a social studies elective. The last two forms in this packet are to be given to a school counselor to let them know you are applying for school credit. There is a $30.00 fee for materials, which can be turned in at the Wasilla Police Department or brought to the first class, along with the two-page registration form attached to this letter. Notebook paper, a pen or pencil, and a snack for the afternoon break are also suggested. When the fee and forms are turned in, you will receive the Student Manual and you can begin reading the required materials – sign up early and avoid a homework overload! We appreciate your interest and look forward to having you as a member of the Mat-Su Youth Court.
