Signs and Wonders

Throughout the pages of the Bible we can see many recordings of the miraculous works of

God. The fact that God has always been in the business of doing miracles makes perfect

sense, since the very definition of the word “miracle” is an “act of God.” A miracle can be

defined as something humanly impossible, but divinely simple. Miracles have always

testified of God’s divine nature and they have always been used to draw mankind closer to

Him, or to accomplish His perfect will for a certain situation or person’s life.

What I find to be most fascinating about God’s miracles is that He allows us to be a part of

them. A great example of this was when Joshua prayed for the sun to stand still as he battled

against the five kings of the Amorites, and we are told it did not go down for almost an

entire day (Joshua 10:12-13). God had a plan for Joshua to fight these kings and so He

empowered him to do mighty feats, and to request a miracle to be done. Joshua was

obedient to God’s calling and, you might say, signs and wonders followed him.

As amazing as this may seem, we need to realize God has also commissioned us to go into

battle by preaching the gospel to every creature. Jesus spoke this to His disciples and He

clearly stated there would be signs and wonders (miracles) following those who believe,

including casting out demons, speaking with new tongues, and laying hands upon the sick,

resulting in their recovery (Mark 16:15, 17-18).

Chances are we will not keep the sun from setting today as a result of our prayer, but if we

ask God to equip us with a love for sharing the message of Jesus Christ with others, and for

sharing our testimony of what He has done in our lives, then we might just see the miracle

of bringing the Son into their life for eternity. One thing is for sure—if we choose to be

obedient to our Lord, then we should expect signs and wonders (miracles) to follow. Let’s

choose to let God do great things through each of us today.
