Difference in the Turbidity Readings between Online and Lab Equipment
Why?
S. 45
Difference in the turbidity readings between online and lab equipment – Why?
» Wavelength:
MEBAK Standard is 650nm, general purpose lab units use mostly white light (400-1100nm)
» Color:Lab units with white light offer no colour compensation!
» Temperature:Even smallest temperature deviations can lead to major differences!
S. 46
Difference in the turbidity readings between online and lab equipment – Why?
» Gas Bubbles:
Measurements are done in open cuvettes. MEBAK recommends closed cuvettes.
» Measurements in bottles:
Bottle size and color has an impact on the measurement. Standard lab instruments have no option for correction.
» Other Issues:
Correct calibration, water bath, measuring angle, optical components
S. 47
Turbidity in beer according to MEBAK
» Measurement of turbidity/ particle concentration by scattered light
» Scattering angle 25°/ 90°
» wavelength 650nm +/- 30nm
» Calibration with formazine in EBC
S. 48
Turbidity in beer, recommended earlier by EBC
» Measurement of turbidity/ particle concentration by scattered light
» Scattering angle 90°
» wavelength 560nm green light» Calibration with formazine in
EBC
S. 49
» Same angle, same wavelength, same type:Excellent comparability, deviation < +/- 5%
» Same angle, same wavelength, different type:Good comparability, deviation < +/- 10 .. 20%
» Same angle, different wavelength:Hardly comparable, deviation by a factor of 2 (e.g. for green light) or more (white light)
» Different angle, different or same wavelength:Hardly comparable, deviation by a factor of 10 or more
