TARGETED MOOD MANAGEMENT THROUGH INDIVIDUAL WALL DESIGNCustomisation of objects and solutions is a big trend: individual design and unique presentation focusing entirely on personal preferences and requirements. This trend has now hit the interior designs of today and tomorrow. The decisive criterion is the flexible interchangeability of the design, allowing a quick and simple change of room ambience, seasonal themes or new concepts – popular in gastronomy, hotels, shops, museums or in other public buildings. With SIHL EASY2WALL, Sihl Direct CH provide a strong solution.
Whoever designs rooms, works specifically to reflect the peo-
ple who move around within that particular space. Individu-
al wishes of customers are just as important as the special fea-
tures or functions of the room – i.e. a boutique, a restaurant
or a showroom. “Mood Management” is the term used to de-
scribe the control of the mood, creating an atmosphere – a
good mood. And our fast-paced world is constantly calling out
for new room concepts, that allow the adaption of themes as
quickly and simply as possible. With the focus being on attract-
ing new guests by varying the ambience; creating an accent of
surprise for customers with new room atmospheres: whereby
the interior transforms into an exterior and vice-versa.

The One-Stop-Shop for flexible wall designSihl Direct CH offers a complete service for interior design-
ers, who are then left 100% freedom to concentrate their
energies in the creative design while the Sihl Direct’s team
of specialists, SIHL EASY2WALL, absorb all the challeng-
es that may occur – from the planning through to a prob-
lem-free application. “You bring the idea – and we’ll make
it reality” promises SIHL EASY2WALL. As a One-Stop
solution provider the specialists transform the ideas into
plans and put them where and how the customers want
them. From application consultation, and design to selec-
tion of the material to be used through to the digital print-
ing and application, everything is covered in a single, easy
and clean-cut solution!
The Swiss scenographer Ralph Eichenberger, who makes
dreams come true for companies, museums and institutes
with various productions, showrooms and guided tours, hits
the nail on the head “The possibilities created are unlimited. I
am personally interested in the flexible application, quick and
easy way to remodel a room over and over again”.
Creative ideas – technical, perfectly implementedThe printed wallpapers can be applied to the wall with-
in a few hours and thanks to a special process can be re-
moved much quicker without leaving a residue. The vari-
ous SIHL DESIGN2WALL products, which can be printed
with any design and leave convincing results through high
colour brilliance, high contrast and sharp line definition,
come into question for all solutions found by SIHL EASY-2WALL. With their quality properties the products are ide-
al for diverse room conditions, inside and outside. To this
Ralph Eichenberger says “the creative freedom I get is im-
portant. Almost everything is possible, and I don’t have to
worry about the technical application as the SIHL EASY-2WALL specialists take care of everything.”
Design solutions with functionality
Impressive room experiences begin with the creations of
the designer. To meet high demands of customers, not
only does the design have to be perfect but the applica-
tion too. Beat Fellmann, project manager of SIHL EASY-2WALL understands this all too well ”We implement, we
ensure a clean project plan, consider construction require-
ments like wiring, light switches and the correct prepara-
tion of the surfaces to be decorated. Measurements, clean
production, coordination of all the craftsmen and process-
es needed until the project is finished - our customers do
not have to worry about any of the technical challenges
that we may stumble upon!”

BEYOND THE BORDERWith impressive images the Japanese photographer Yoko Ishii documents the unusual life of the inhabi-tants of Nara: the wild roaming deer. Around 1200 of the animals live in the park of the midtown Nara, an ancient town situated south of the Japanese island Honshu, not far from Kyoto and Osaka.
Japanese know these unbelievably tame animals and love
them. Nearly every child has participated in a school trip
and fed the deer or even stroked them. It still surprises the
inhabitants of Nara to see a group of deer trot across the
street. This fascinating experience is the reason Yoko Ishii
began documenting the life of the free-roaming deer back
in 2011.
The Deer is seen as a gift of the Shinte gods in Japan and
is a holy, national protected animal: however, this status
has also led to overpopulation of the deer in a few are-
as of the country. Through their eating habits the animals
have endangered the land and forest economy. This led to
organised official hunts to keep the population of these
species under control: with over 300,000 deer falling vic-
tim to this population management. It is the same kind of
deer throughout the country, but they are all treated dif-
ferently depending on where they live.
Yoko Ishii’s images show, how little the animals keep to
the borders or laws of the people. However, the town is
the safest place for the animals.
Yoko Ishii lives around 350 km from Nara. Once a month
she visits the town and its unusual inhabitants “This way
I savour the view of a tourist and experience the unusu-
al sights of the deer trotting across the street or sticking
their heads in shop windows, over and over again”.

07 SUCESS STORY
The title of her exhibition and documentation “Beyond
the border”, came to the photographer as she dreamt
that the animals one day would conquer an abandoned
town not having to share the streets with humans. As al-
ways, she worked closely with the print studio Endo, test-
ing various papers and finally settled for the 4844 SIHL MASTERCLASS Lustre Photo Paper 300, perfectly fit-
ting for the animal images thanks to its subtle sheen.
The universal media from the SIHL MASTERCLASS series
offers an elegant, light structured and uniform surface
with decent satin sheen, is anti-reflective and the perfect
choice when a multi-functional but elegant photo paper
is required.

NEW EMBOSSED NON-WOVEN WALLPAPERS FOR SOLVENT AND LATEX INKS Individually printable wallpapers with a special surface
structure allow an obvious accent to the design of interiors.
Sihl expands its assortment with the embossed wallpapers
Sihl Non-woven design2wall Sol 195 Leather/Facets/
Weave (2535 + 2536 + 2537), attracting attention with
their unique embossing. The new wallpapers with their in-
dividual haptics are perfect for printing using solvent and
latex inks.
Shortly after the introduction of the waterbased Sihl wall-
papers Sihl launched the new embossed varieties for print-
ing with solvent and the environmentally-friendlier la-
tex inks: Sihl Non-woven design2wall Sol 195 Leather (2535), Sihl Non-woven design2wall Sol 195 Facets (2536) and Sihl Non-woven design2wall Sol 195 Weave
(2537). The three new, high quality non-woven wallpa-
pers each of which with an elegant satin finish are win-
ners in their look and feel: “Leather” with its traditional
leather imitation structure, “Facets” with its original facets
structure and the “Weave” with an extra-ordinary weaved
pattern. The print images stand out thanks to their out-
standing depth, high colour brilliance and high scratch re-
sistance. Without extra surface protection, they offer dura-
ble, individual room design with extra class. Processing is
easy, especially as the printed non-woven can be hung us-
ing standard non-woven wallpaper paste. Therefore they
offer a very interesting expansion of the existing collec-
tion of SIHL DESIGN2WALL wallpapers – while keeping
the same excellent print quality and properties of the non-
embossed variation 2511.
The new varieties have a very high quality coating which
offers a wide colour gamut and an excellent colour render-
ing for outstandingly brilliant printed images.
Always a winner with this opticIn addition to the above advantages, the unique emboss-
ing patterns lend every printed image a very unique, incom-
parable appearance. Neither during printing or with further
processing are any additional precatuions needed, thanks
to the flexibility of the special Sihl coating. No damage oc-
curs during printing nor do problems arise during hang-
ing. Thanks to the special converting techniques of Sihl the
embossed variations can also be pasted using the stand-
ard non-woven wallpaper paste, simple, and are easy to re-
move again.
The quick dry prints are water-resistant and an extra liquid
lamination is not necessary. They maintain physical proper-
ties and their good wet strength after embossing, with only
the thickness of the wallpaper changes. After embossing, al-
though thanks to the high surface weight of the material and
the thickness, it most certainly reaches an excellent level of
opacity: Thus, enabling it to cover irregularities of wall surfac-
es perfectly. Due to the high dimensional stability of the PVC-
free, FSC® certified material, the hanging of these wallpapers
is very easy: Making it easy to put exclusive interior designs
on your walls.

SIHL MASTERCLASS: “SMALL PICTURES MADE BIG”Under the title “print your own visions” Media Manage-
ment students from the RheinMain University, togeth-
er with Sihl developed an image film. Five students led
by Prof. Michael Erkelenz created a film with emotional
scenes reproducing the effect that images printed on the
SIHL MASTERCLASS had on them. Protagonists explain
and show how large format printing enriched their lives.
Despite the age of tablet, smartphone and Co, why do
printed images still delight? Why big pictures? How impor-
tant are the haptics aspects and emotions triggered by large
prints? Under the leadership of Prof. Michael Erkelenz, the
students of the Design, Informatics & Media Faculty pursue
these questions in reference to printing. “The challenge of
the project team was to produce a film capturing the val-
ue of photos with an adequate storyline for the target au-
dience”, explains Prof. Erkelenz about the aims of the pro-
ject. So the students designed and produced a very special
film under professional conditions with the full support of
Sihl. With emotional, evocative and countless dramaturgy
they show why a picture impregnates the memory much
quicker and remains longer than words. As well as why
pictures are an integral part of personal life in compari-
son with non-volatile data. In the format of documentary
scenes, this film recreates touching responses and impuls-
es. At the end they show the striking ways the large print-
ed images effect people.
A bit of Hollywood in WiesbadenDuring their visit to the plant in Düren, the students could
learn the basics about professional coatings of the SIHL
group, as well as experience the philosophy and quality
of the SIHL MASTERCLASS papers. A joint concept was
devised with which the students could then expand and
develop with fresh ideas, transpose using storyboard and
meticulously produce their plot: a reporter interviewed a
hobby photographer, a young artist, an elder woman, and
a freshly-wed pair – asking them for their favourite image.
A loft-style factory environment was picked for filming. The
students selected professional and amateur actors, wrote
scripts and within three days filmed each of the sets on the
university premises, using professional camera equipment
under the guidance of Prof. Michael Erkelenz and camera
supervisor Carlos Alvarez-Vela. The entire post-production
also took place at the university. Prof. Erkelenz concludes:
“The result is a comprehensible story that is narrated with
emotion and understanding”.

AN AWARD-WINNING SYMBIOSIS: BISTROTEA AND SIHL ENDURO ICEFrom Munich, Bistrotea revolutionized the tea drin-ker world. With the slogan “the spirit of the age” the company developed an innovative counter part to the common Teabag: The TPOD (Tea Portion of Design), which is both delightful bag and the dispo-sal, practical spoon in one. The stylish product comes wrapped in a transparent SIHL ENDURO Ice case.
The baselinePlunge, stir, done – is what the original concept of Bistrotea
looked like. Developed from the design principle of the Bis-
tro sugar-packaging, Bistrotea offers a completely new tea
experience.
The TPOD consists of a freshly harvested tea, shrink-
wrapped in a perforated designer foil, in accordance with
the new food industry standards. Thus, the TPOD can be
directly poured with boiling water. The intensity of the
flavour is individually controlled by the duration it stays
submerged in the hot water and the TPOD simultaneously
acts as a spoon for stirring. The high-quality types of tea
leafs range from Ginger through to Earl Grey and are of
course free of all additives.
Minimal packaging for maximum pleasure was Bistrotea’s
goal. But it needed a packaging that on one hand protects
the high-quality tea but on the other hand compliments the
design of the product.
The implementationDuring the search for the perfect packaging, the first thing
they did was to experiment with different types of paper.
None of them satisfied the high demands of the packaging.
SIHL ENDURO Ice convinced us at first glance, not once
but twice: The classic, elegant look of the composite mate-
rial promised a perfect symbiosis with the stylish TPOD. The
special material properties also matched the requested de-
mands perfectly. The SIHL ENDURO Ice paper-film-com-
pound is tear-proof, water resistant and maintains the
aroma of the tea. In addition to this, this matertial also sus-
tains its properties throughout humidity or light changes.

11 NEWS FROM THE COATING COMPANY
And is heat-sealable for long term indulgence. The unique
structure of the material, “Made in Germany” convinced
the Bistrotea-maker. Meanwhile the combination of the
TPOD and the packaging already won several awards, in-
cluding the FPA Gold Award Winner in Packaging Excel-
lence USA (2008), Swiss Star (2008) and EAFA Alufoil tro-
phy Winner Europe (2009).
The prospectsThe Bistrotea product lines are going to keep increasing, so
that there is a continuous need for the SIHL ENDURO Ice packaging for the new varieties. Furthermore, big repack-
aging and marketing items, will in future, also be produced
with the support from the versatile SIHL ENDURO Ice.
The productSIHL ENDURO Ice is a composite material with a film core
sandwiched between paper, allowing SIHL ENDURO Ice
to combine both the advantages of paper and film: making
it tear resistant at the same time as being impermeable to
water – perfect for printing and further processing. Prod-
