SIIT was invited to participate in the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy (CRMA) Academics Conference and Exhibition 2013 during December 12-13, 2013. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the opening ceremony. Prof. Dr. Thananchai Leephakpreeda (Head of the School of

Manufacturing Systems and Mechanical Engineering (MSME) and Chairperson of Mechanical Engineering (ME) Curriculum) led a SIIT delegation including Asst. Prof. Dr. Chawalit Jeenanunta (Head of the School of Management Technology (MT) and Chairperson of MT Curriculum), Asst. Prof. Dr. Suthathip Suanmali (a faculty member of the School of MT), researchers, and graduate students, to present their research work. There were 157 projects from 30 universities nationwide that were presented. Prof. Dr. Thananchai and his graduate students demonstrated a device that increases wind speed for vertical axis wind turbines and a mechanism that determines wind velocity via interpreting dynamic behaviors of helium balloon. The results of their research are currently being patented.

Moreover, Asst. Prof. Dr. Chawalit and his team presented their research on the multi-objective optimization for large-scale power generation system with CO2 emission. Asst. Prof. Dr. Suthathip Suanmali and researchers from the Transportation Research Center (TREC) also presented the work done for many highway authorities in Thailand, for example, Department of Highways, Department of Rural Roads, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and Expressway Authority of Thailand.

SIIT Educational Tripto Singapore Community

Service at 1500 Miles

Foundation by the School

of MT

Then, the students visited National University of Singapore (NUS) and toured the university town which includes dormitories, sports complex, and studying areas. A representative of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering gave the overview information and the research work of the department. The delegates met NUS graduate students to exchange their experiences and visited the laboratories at NUS.

Finally, the students went to visit the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN), which is part of the Agency for Science, Technology and

Research (A*STAR), a leading agency for fostering world-class scientific research and talent for a vibrant knowledge-based and innovation-driven Singapore. The delegates were greeted by Nunnarpas Yongvongsoontorn, who is an SIIT graduate and currently working on her Ph.D. at IBN. She introduced the students to the Youth Research Program (YRP) which provides students from secondary school with hands-on research experience.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which is to be fully implemented by 2015 is becoming a major interest on students’ and job seekers’ minds. The AEC will have a great impact on the higher education systems in Southeast Asia and will likely facilitate the mobilization of students and staff among the educational institutions across ASEAN countries. SIIT is taking this opportunity to introduce its students to leading universities in our neighboring countries.

On Mar. 24-26, 2014, the School of Bio-Chemical Engineering and Technology (BCET) organized an educational visit to universities and research institutes in Singapore. The trip was led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanwipa Siriwatwechakul who accompanied 24 students ranging from sophomore to senior students.

Firstly, the delegates visited the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Nanyang Technical University (NTU), and were welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dong-An Wang, Associate Chair (Graduate Studies). He gave a presentation about the department and the graduate application process. NTU has approximately 40 scholarship opportunities available each year for graduate studies.

“SIIT ROADSHOW ” January - March 2014

During January-March 2014, the Admission and Public Relations Division had the opportunity to meet teachers and students in Bangkok (Assumption Convent and Mahaprutaram Girls’ School under the Royal Patronage of her Majesty the Queen), Nonthaburi (Watkhemaphirataram School), Pathum Thani (Siam International School), Khon Kaen (Khon Kaen Wittayayon School), and Chiang Mai (Chiang Mai International School) through the SIIT Roadshow activities. The main goal of this roadshow was to give information about academic programs, SIIT scholarships, and SIIT entrance examination activities to interested students.

In Semester 1/2013, the School of Management Technology (MT) organized a community service trip to the 1500 Miles Foundation in Nakhon Pathom province. The trip was organized to promote teamwork spirit among students and to raise awareness of volunteering among young people. In this activity, a group of 39 students helped the 1500 Miles Foundation renovate a volunteer training center that was damaged by the flood in 2011. The students also had an opportunity to learn and practice survival skills in a flood situation.

After the activity, the students reflected on their feelings in a discussion group and in writing. Here are some examples:

“People in the community are so kind and generous. They bring us water and snacks. With all the smiles they have for us, they really made our day! ... What do I get from the trip? I know that we have a so much better life than some other people. I also get a delightful feeling from helping them. For some situations in our lives, we might forget what we have and might be concerned with only what we want to have. Sometimes we might even do the wrong thing to get what we want. Now I know that what I have is enough, and who I am is already good. People here have taught me to appreciate my life. So I would like to thank the School of MT for giving me this experience.” – Chaninun Janyavuthisilp

“…Overall, a painful but knowledgeable experience about the survival, hardship, and friendship created by the bond that people build up when facing a common challenge.” – Nattapon Sanitrat

Every semester, SIIT arranges a basic Thai language course (listening and speaking) for new SIIT international students in order to help foreign students to learn basic Thai language. At the end of the course, a one-day study trip is organized.

Trip for Basic Thai Language Class: Semester 2/2013

The Student Affairs and Alumni Relations Division, the International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division, and the Student Committee of SIIT, jointly organized the “2014 SIIT International Night” on February 25, 2014 at SIIT Main Building, Rangsit Campus. This event was under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala, the Assistant Director for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations. Its aim was to promote the cultural exchange among international and Thai students. This year, 17 faculty and staff members and more than 300 students participated in this event. There were various styles of international dishes prepared by international students, exciting performances from the SIIT Music and Chorus Club, the Recreational Group of Thammasat University (RCATU), and those from international students such as Cambodian, Burmese, Vietnamese, Bhutanese, German, and French students. The highlight of the event was the “Papaya Pok Pok (Thai spicy salad)” cooking contest. Four teams of International students (contestants) with Thai students (team members) were formed to prepare and cook delicious Thai salad dishes in

the contest. The awards were given to the following students: Mr. Fabian Hirt from

Germany (1st prize), Ms. Oley Phearkeo from Laos (2nd prize), and Mr. Dana Blouin from the United States of America (3rd prize).

In semester 2/2013, the International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division arranged a study trip on March 2, 2014 to Khlong Lad Mayom Floating Market, Bangkok. The trip started by taking a long-tailed boat along a canal to see the lifestyle of Thai people who live by the canal. Students visited a Thai house museum. The owner of this house has conserved many ancient things, for example, toys, porcelains, and pictures. In addition, he showed how to make

a Banana Stalk Carving, which is used to decorate crematoriums during funerals. Then, the students learned how to make Thai traditional perfume (Nam Op Thai). Before getting back on the boat, students had a chance to practice the market conversation that they studied in the classroom at the fruit market. At noon, they spent time shopping and eating Thai food at the main market. Overall, this trip brought them not only a chance to practice Thai language, but also to learn Thai culture and lifestyle on waterways for living, traveling, and trading.
