The ‘Beska’ Bridge – New Construction

The ongoing construction of ‘Beska’ bridge is taking part between the cities of Novi Sad and Belgrade near the town of Beska as part of the full, 4-lane development of the E75 motorway (part of the Pan-European Corridor 10).

The Design-Build Contract includes planning and construction of this bridge. With 2,213 m length it is the longest bridge construction in all of Serbia and the largest bridge in Europe currently being built. The bridge is crossing the Danube river with spans of 60 m + 105 m + 210 m + 105 m + 60 m. Three bridge piers are constructed in the river. The bridge have a height above ground of up to 40 m. The ‘cantilever meth-od of construction’ was used to build the wide spans of the bridge crossing the river. This girders were concreted and pre-stressed in short, balanced 5-m-sections on both sides of the piers at the same time (balance beams). Once the centre of the span was reached, the framework carriage is moved to the next pier and the procedure was repeated until the overhanging girders joined in the middle of a span.

The ‘Sava’ Bridge – New Construction

The new cable stayed bridge, which will pass over the tip of Ada Ciganlija island, carries six traffic lanes and a double track light rail line as well as two pedestrian/cycling lanes. The bridge is a 6 span, con-tinuous superstructure with an overall length of 929 meters and deck width of 45.04 m. The main support system is a single pylon asymmet-ric cable stayed structure. The pylon is 200 meters high.

In the category of SINGLE-pylon cable-stayed bridges, with its 376 m main span and deck width of 45 m together with the 200 m pylon, Sava bridge is the largest asimmetric cable-stayed bridge being con-structed in the world at this present time, with almost 16.935 m2 of main span handing on ONE pylon.

With a main span of 376 m, the bridge over river Sava shall rank in the top 10 list of long span cable-stayed bridges constructed in Europe.

The Preliminary Design was completed by Ponting Maribor, DDC Ljubljana & CPV Novi Sad in 2006, as a first-awarded concept design proposal on international competition in 2004. The bridge is to be con-structed using a Design-Build approach, with the detailed design to be completed by the contractor ‘Porr Technobau und Umwelt AG’. The contract will be administered under the FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Plan and Design Build, (First Edition, 1999).

Conclusion:Quality of Sika product and Sika’s experience guide this project to the successful end.

Page 6: Sika at Work · PDF filecontract will be administered under the FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Plan and Design Build, (First Edition, 1999). Conclusion:

‘Gazela’ is the most important bridge in Belgrade across the Sava river. It was built within four years (1966-1970).

The bridge is 332 m long and 27.5 m wide, with three lanes in each direction, and total road width of 21.8 m. It is constructed as a combi-nation of beam and arch, with shallow-frame beam and diagonal steel-concrete abutments. The maximum height of the span centre is 22.8 m at median water level.

The bridge is chief connection line between city center and New Belgrade, and also carries the transit traffic on E70 and E75 highways through Belgrade. As such, it is extremely overloaded and a cause of frequent congestion, as it leans on the main Belgrade’s Mostar inter-change. On average over 160,000 vehicles cross it every day (not-withstanding the impeded flow), even it was designed to be used by 40,000.
