Dear Friends,

Thanks to your support, thousands of students are back on track for college and future careers. You’ve given us an exceptional year of growth and success. A year that has resulted in expanded STEM education programs, raised academic performance, and increased resource accessibility for thousands of students.

Our flagship program, Elevate [Math], doubled the number of students we served in school districts from San Francisco to Monterey and even into Oregon. We developed new curricula for Elevate [Math], expanding the program into high school to serve students in 7th through 10th grade. To date, Elevate [Math] has served 9,000 students, preparing them for success in their next-level math course.

Our 49ers STEM Leadership Institute opened a second state-of-the-art digital fabrication and ideation space in Santa Clara and we were thrilled to welcome its first cohort of students to high school. The Fab Lab Santa Clara High School houses 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC milling machines. Students use these cutting edge machines to apply STEM principles and problem solving skills in a real world setting.

In 2016, our Learning Innovation Hub hosted its 5th round of “Pitch Games: Learn-Link-Launch.” This event featured 10 EdTech startups pitching new products to educators to match them with classroom needs.

The East Side Alliance partnered the East Side Union High School District with San Jose State University to launch the “Spartan East Side Promise.” This amazing initiative offers students in underserved East San Jose schools a guaranteed pathway to admission at San Jose State University.

In November, we hosted our 12th Annual Pioneers & Purpose Celebration for Education. This celebration honored Google Cloud’s Senior Vice President Diane Greene as SVEF’s Pioneer Business Leader for her noteworthy leadership in technology and education philanthropy. With your help, we raised over $1.4 million to help strengthen our programs and elevate student achievement. We also partnered with the Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers Association to present the 2nd successful Silicon Valley Wine Auction to benefit our STEM education programs.

Thank you again for your generous contributions. Your time and resources have improved the lives of thousands of students and teachers.

Sincerely,

Muhammed ChaudhryPresident & CEO, SVEF

49ers STEM Leadership Institute (SLI)With support from Chevron, SLI was created in partnership with the San Francisco 49ers, the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, and the Santa Clara Unified School District. Each year, following a rigorous application process, an incoming cohort of 60 seventh graders is selected to join the existing cohorts and are supported through their senior year of high school. The program is in its third year, now serving 180 students between Cabrillo Middle School and Santa Clara High School.

By providing designated staff and teachers at each site more than 300 extra hours of enhanced curriculum and STEM opportunities annually, SLI fosters and inspires students to pursue STEM majors at top tier universities and become the future leaders in their fields.

Elevate [Math]Elevate [Math] is an intensive summer intervention program. It prepares targeted incoming 7th through 10th graders for success in their next level math courses. We accomplish this by front-loading key concepts to create a solid base from which to build the student’s math skills. Elevate [Math] provides students with 75 to 125 hours of instruction from a credentialed teacher, utilizing a rigorous math curricula developed by an expert design team. Elevate [Math] serves grades 7 through 10 and will add a 6th grade curriculum in 2017.

ELEVATE [MATH] DOUBLED

ENROLLMENT

Studies show that math success is a critical gatekeeper to

college and career readiness. Unfortunately, in Silicon Valley 46% of students are not college

ready in math by the time they graduate high school. In

partnership with 31 school districts, Elevate [Math] is

addressing this challenge in Silicon Valley and beyond. During

the summer of 2016, Elevate [Math] served 2,300 students, more than doubling the number from the previous summer. To

date over 9,000 students at risk of falling off the path to college and career have participated in

Elevate [Math].

Learning Innovation Hub (iHub)iHub connects Education Technology (EdTech) entrepreneurs, educators, and researchers. Together, we seek to facilitate collaboration and product feedback for optimal decisions to integrate technology tools and solutions for our classrooms.

The annual “Pitch Games” affords innovative EdTech startups a platform to pitch their products to the education community in an effort to solve an education challenge. iHub recruits teacher teams to identify the most significant teaching and learning needs. A panel of Silicon Valley business and education leaders then selects the most promising companies to “match and connect” these early-stage companies to the needs identified by the teachers in the classroom.

During the 3-month evaluation pilot, students and teachers benefit from utilizing technology products not normally accessible to them. Meanwhile, EdTech entrepreneurs gain direct classroom feedback to improve their products.

EdTech companies were selected to join iHub and were

placed into Silicon Valley classrooms working with iHub

Teacher Fellows.

iHub Teacher Fellows and classrooms were selected to

prototype new EdTech products impacting an estimated 3,000 students across 16 districts.

ADVANCING K-12 COMPUTER

SCIENCEAfter a rigorous application

process, SVEF was selected as a Regional Learning Partner for Code.org to facilitate Computer

Science K-12 professional development for teachers. SVEF is a leading voice in urging the

development of a computer science policy for K-12

schools, especially in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

Expansion of computer science instruction in K-12 schools is critical in providing students

the necessary skills to succeed in the modern workforce.

SVEF continues to be a strong supporter of STEM curriculum

and preparing students for college and careers.

East Side Alliance (ESA)Formalized in 2013, the East Side Alliance (ESA) is a collective impact initiative bringing together the East Side Union High School District, its seven feeder elementary school districts, San Jose State University, and Evergreen Community College to create a seamless Pre-K to college pathway for students.

The ESA consists of eight partner districts and more than 70 nonprofit partners that together benefit a student population of over 85,000 that, if unified, would be the third largest district in the state. The ESA serves as an educational community by sharing ideas, leveraging resources, and aligning practices to ensure every student’s success.

ESA joined the Core Districts’ data warehouse for the 2016-2017 school year - The Core Districts is a statewide initiative focused on addressing math achievement gaps for African American and Hispanic/Latino students by fostering collaboration between the largest school districts in California

SPARTAN EAST SIDE PROMISE

Established in the fall of 2015, the Spartan East Side Promise identifies

specific criteria that, if achieved, would guarantee students graduating

from East Side Union High School District admission to San Jose State

University. By clearly articulating the specific criteria for SJSU admission,

the Spartan East Side Promise provides a clear roadmap for success to the

85,000 students within the ESA.

A-G RequirementsOver the last four years, seven districts adopted the UC/CSU minimum required college course sequence as a default curriculum. This sequence is referred to as the A-G requirements. When SVEF began advocating this change, only 13% of high school students in Santa Clara County attended schools with this default graduation requirement. Today, that number is 74% of high school students.

In the years since the East Side Union High School District made the UC/CSU A-G entrance requirements the default graduation requirements (2011-2015), the A-G completion rate has steadily increased from 34% to 43% of graduates. While the A-G completion rate for Hispanic students is lower (26%), A-G completion by Hispanic students has increased at an even higher rate than for the total student population - thus helping to close the achievement gap.
