Notes from the Executive Director… by Annwen Loverin

In April, we celebrated National Volunteer Week – a huge thank you to the hundreds of volunteers that provide over 40,000 hours of time, energy, and expertise to Silver Harbour and also to PARC Retirement Living for sponsoring our Volunteer Appreciation Tea. Now, in May, we are looking forward to both the Mad Hatter Tea and our Spring Market. The Mad Hatter Tea is taking place on Saturday May 5th – the Tea has become so popular that it is now sold out with no more tickets remaining! Thank you to CUPE Local 389 for presenting this great event. Next up, our Spring Market will take place on Saturday, May 26th, 10 am to 1pm. Come out and enjoy handmade crafts such as woodworking, stained glass, knitting, weaving and quilting, in addition to home-baked goodies and preserves. The Boutique and Clothes Closet will also be open with some special treasures. And, if you would like to help out by volunteering, donating, or helping put up posters for the Spring Market, there are more details on page 3 about how to help.

Upcoming Redevelopment and Society MeetingsYou might have noticed that, since October 2017, we have been holding Redevelopment Gatherings for members to hear up-to-date information, ask questions, and engage in discussion about a new home for Silver Harbour, in conjunction with the redevelopment of Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre. You’re encouraged to check the bulletin board inside the front door of Silver Harbour for updated information about our new home and also attend the upcoming Redevelopment Gatherings as follows: Wednesday, May 16th (1:00 – 2:30 pm) and Tuesday, May 29th (1:00 – 2:30 pm) in the Auditorium (details on pages 10 and 11)

In the coming weeks, we expect to be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting of the members of Silver Harbour to make a decision about transferring our property to the City of North Vancouver in exchange for a new facility – under our newly-approved bylaws, members will receive official notification of such a meeting by email, by an ad in the North Shore News, and on our website. We also plan to provide information about the meeting on our bulletin boards at Silver Harbour and in the newsletter; you will be able to pick up printed documentation about the meeting at the front desk, when it is announced.

Coming up on Tuesday, June 12th at 1pm is the Silver Harbour Annual General Meeting. This is a chance for members to hear about the successes and challenges of the past year as well as vote in our Board elections for those individuals who will lead the Centre in the coming year. If you would like to stand for the Board of Directors, please make sure you submit a nomination form (available at the front desk) before 4 pm on Monday May 28 th. If you would like to read reports and financial statements before the AGM, these will be ready for you to pick up at the front desk starting Friday, June 8th.

Volunteers NeededWe would be delighted if you could help us out with this year’s Spring Market. Volunteers are needed for set-up (Friday afternoon, May 25th), for the Market itself (Saturday, May 26th, 10 am – 1 pm), as well as take down directly following the market. Please sign up at the front desk.

Baking Donations NeededWe would love to have your donations of baking for the Spring Market. Please drop off your donations on Friday, May 25th, by 10 am. Please do not bring anything which needs to be refrigerated. A list of ingredients would also be appreciated.

Help Us AdvertiseAre you able to put up a poster to help us advertise? Our Spring Market is coming up at the end of May and it would really help us to get the word out if you could put these posters up in places such as: apartment buildings, church and public bulletin boards, coffee shops, community centres, art shops etc. Please ask merchants if you can post them. Posters are available at the front desk.

Email AddressesPlease ensure that we have your current email address, so that we can promptly provide you with information about upcoming meetings for members of the Silver Harbour.

Volunteering at Silver HarbourDid you know that volunteers contribute 80% of the hours required to operate our Centre and activities? Please fill out a Volunteer Form, available at the front desk, or online at www.silverharbourcentre.com/volunteer.pdf if you would like to volunteer at Silver Harbour.

Silver Harbour Refund PolicyAs a rule, Silver Harbour does not give refunds. A refund will be given for any activity

which is cancelled by Silver Harbour Management, at their discretion, may

authorize a refund, or partial refund, for exceptional circumstances.

Please Be Scent FreeWhen we talk about scents, we mean fragrances, aromas or perfumes – anything that adds a smell to something else. Scents

can usually be found in personal-care products such as perfume, aftershave, cologne, shampoo and conditioner, soap, body lotion and deodorant. Some people have severe reactions to scents, so we ask you to be scent free while you are at Silver Harbour or when you take a bus trip or use our transportation services.

Important Information About Bus Trips

This information will be very helpful to anyone interested in joining our bus trips…

1. Please note that return times are approximate, as there is no way to predict traffic or other possible timing issues which may arise. We recommend that you do not schedule any appointments directly following the trip.

2. Please read the bus trip description carefully – we will make every effort to fully describe the trip, including how much walking there is and whether you may bring your walker or wheelchair.

3. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time of the trip. This allows us to leave at the time listed.

4. Some drivers will appreciate a tip and others prefer not to be tipped. If you would like to tip the driver, please bring a small amount of money for this purpose. If a driver accepts tips, it is still your choice whether you want to give one or not.

5. Please remember that the driver will be making all safety-related decisions during the trip. This will include whether windows may be opened, the level of indoor heating, where the bus may stop, and other important decisions.

6. We do not offer refunds for bus trips unless the bus trip is full and we can resell your ticket to a person on the waitlist. Trips cancelled by Silver Harbour will be refunded in full.

7. If a trip is full, please put your name on the waitlist. We will attempt to accommodate substantial waitlists by creating second trips when possible and people on the waitlist will have the first opportunity to buy tickets for the second trip.

8. If you are driving to Silver Harbour for your bus trip, please park on the street or in the parking lot to the east of our building. Anyone may park in these areas for any length of time.

9. Please limit your use of scented products like hairsprays and perfumes when going on bus trips. Some people can be very sensitive to these scents, especially in enclosed spaces. We very much appreciate your consideration.

10. Enjoy your trip!

“Hi Grandma” Telephone Scam(The following story actually happened to one of our members.)

I received one of the “Hi Grandma” telephone scam calls this morning. The man presented himself as my eldest grandson and said that he had had an accident and needed a $10,000 deposit to avoid being charged in civil court for breaking another man’s $50,000 watch. The story was very involved and, of course, he was adding to it based on my responses. It was very cleverly done and very smooth! Everything had to be done today. The tip off to me was that he didn’t sound like the person he was impersonating. Even though he said he had a cold when I asked, his cold symptoms rapidly disappeared. Also his style of conversation was not what I would have expected. I had just read an article from CARP about scams, and all this began to sound too familiar. When I said I had to go and would call him back, he gave lots of reasons I couldn’t do that, confirming my suspicions, and then hung up. There was no number on call display either of course.

I had heard of these but never had had such a call. Please, if you get a call like this, don’t give out the expected name, like I did, and ask instead for something that only a real grandchild would know, such as a mother’s name. Be even more suspicious if the story is complex and a lot of money is needed right away. Do as I did and say you have to call them back. Don’t ask them for a phone number, use one you know to be real, or they will just give you the phone they are using. Maybe ask another question only the real person would know. Once they realize you are on to them they will hang up. Under no circumstances arrange to provide any money by any means until you can check the truth of their story. If it is genuine, they will have no problem with you doing that. Any sense that urgent cash is needed is another red flag. They are very skilled at using anything you say to make their story more real.

Please be careful. A genuine situation from a real relative can stand to be verified and will still be there when you check it out with a third party.
