School Values
Our school values are:
Kindness/Atawhai
Excellence/Hiranga
Respect/Whakaute
Integrity/Ngākau pono
At Silverdale School we believe:
* positive behaviour can be learnt and difficult
and disruptive behaviour can be unlearnt;
* individual children are not a ‘problem’ – we
need to change the environment around them
to support positive behaviour;
* punishing and isolating children doesn’t bring
about long-term and sustainable changes in
behaviour;
* we need to concentrate on a small number of evidence-based programmes and
frameworks that we know work;
* there are no quick fixes. Behaviour change takes time.
We have already seen significant positive behaviour changes within our school. Our
children are continually learning what it means to show, Kindness/Atawhai,
Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute and Integrity/Ngākau pono and are
continuously make great efforts to show these values.
Something to think about, a quote by John Herner which can be seen as an underlying
theme of positive behaviour.
“If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.
If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach.
If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach.
If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach.
If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we… ….teach? ….punish?
Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?”

behaviour expectations Our school-wide incentive programme is our Caught by KERI

Caught by KERI Stars are then collected and the children go into a draw to pick out of the
prize box at our KERI assembly.

Meet the Parent Evenings
Thank you to all the families that came along to Meet the Parent evenings last week, it was
a great turn out. We have a great team of teachers and staff here and they all work hard
to deliver the best possible education and outcomes for your children. If you have any
concerns, queries please contact your child’s teacher. We ask you if you want to see your
child’s teacher in the morning please make it after 8.30am or if that doesn’t suit then email
or phone to make an appointment.
Car Parking
Just a reminder that there is no parking in both carparks at school. Please don’t park by the
kindy as these parks are reserved for kindy parents. Thanks for your cooperation with this.
Communication
Communication is very important to us. Good two-way communication between families
and school is necessary for your child’s success. Research shows that the more parents and
teachers share relevant information with each other about a student, the better equipped
both will be to help that student achieve academically.
Opportunities for two-way communication include:
Parent/teacher conferences
Face to Face
PTA
Phone calls
E-mail or school website
Parent involvement benefits students, including raising their academic achievement. There
are other advantages for children when parents become involved — namely, increased
motivation for learning, improved behaviour, more regular attendance, and a more
positive attitude about home learning and school in general.
Parental involvement can free teachers to focus more on the task of teaching children.
Also, by having more contact with parents, teachers learn more about students' needs and
home environment, which is information they can apply toward better meeting those
needs.
Donation
Thank you to all the families that have paid their donation. The school donation is $200 per
child and can be paid in full or $50 a term. If you pay your full donation before March 1 you
will go into the draw to win back your donation. If you pay termly there will be a draw at
the end of the term to win back your term donation.
Kids Corner
This section is to showcase children’s work from throughout the school. Over the next few
newsletters I will be showcasing Team Tui’s children’s work.
Dream holiday
I survey the oceans around me. What used to be towering waves, are now calm laps of water running to the beach. A dim light flickers across the beautiful blanket of blue in front of me. I walk back into the villa and flick a switch, which sends an array of lights beaming across the room. Ambling towards the fridge, I find myself resisting the unnecessary urge to sleep. I reach my hand into the fridge and pull out a red cylinder with the words: coca cola, imprinted on the side. I slump down on the couch and pop open the soft drink before gurgling it down. I lazily dawdle towards my bag, rummaging through my belongings before taking out my tooth brush, after 2 minutes of brushing my teeth, I stumble over to my bed before having a well deserved sleep. By Alex Neethling, Rm 32
Art in the Foyer
Children in rooms 2 and 4 have been completing their fox art work. Some of their art work
has been chosen to be displayed in the office foyer. The art work will change throughout
the term.
