Hello Chapter Members,
Sweet September has brought us a cool
breeze at last. I’m so happy we have had so
many opportunities to paint this month.
September has been
busy for us: regular
meeting, seminar, and
Tole Month, and of
course, the prep work for
all of these. If you felt the
pain, you've been having
a ball!
We all appreciated
Mary Robinson’s
September class, Merry
Makers Greeting. I assure
you, I learned things I
didn't know about
painting. Just listening to
her was a real treasure. I
hope everyone has
finished their piece and
will bring it for show-and-tell at our
October 12 meeting.
If you do not belong to a committee or
have not considered joining one, please
think it over and become part of a one. It's
not too late. It's such a rewarding thing to
work on projects together.
I encourage you to attend our October
meeting as we will be voting on the new
board for our chapter.
Thanks to all of you who are so
generous with your time
and talent to make this
such a wonderful chapter.
Please read your
newsletter for all the
details. We have some
wonderful things coming
up so mark your
calendars.
Sign up for classes
and events as soon as you
can. It makes the
committee chairman's life
much easier. Remember
this is a volunteer group
and we need to help each
other as much as we can!
Hope to see you
all October 12! And don't forget your
notebooks sketchbooks/journals, or
whatever they are called! Do something and
bring it for show-and-tell.
Thank you,
Sheila Hughes

All non-profit organizations require the
hard work of many hands, heads, and hearts
to attain goals and remain vital. This is true
of our Silver State Tole and Decorative
Painting chapter. We couldn’t continue to
exist without the assistance of many
individuals. However, sometimes certain
individuals stand out from the crowd as a
shining example of what helps our
organization thrive.
If you have noticed such a person, now
is your opportunity to reward them for all
their efforts. As chairman of the Star Award
committee, I will have nomination
paperwork available to all members at the
October chapter meeting. Please take a
moment to consider someone you might like
to nominate for this honor.
Past award winners can not receive the
award again. Here is a list of those
individuals who have won and are current
members: Patty Clark, Cathy Frazier, Sheila
Hughes, Sandy Kilgour, Gwen Palmer,
Barbara Paetzel, Pat Pillen, Mary Robinson,
and Sharon Shuster.

Refreshments for our October
meeting will be sweet & non-
sweet. I signed up for a non-
sweet item. If you have
something to add, let me know.
I want to thank everyone so much
for the munchies they brought to
the September meeting: Nanette,
Jan, Pat S., and anyone I have
forgotten. You are very much
appreciated!
You can email or text me with
your inspirations for
refreshments.

Greetings Fellow Painters,
On the evening of September, Friday the
13th, we were parked in the corner of a
parking lot watching the sky over the freeway.
According to the news media who report this
sort of thing, there wasn’t going to be a full
moon on Friday the 13th again until 2049.
That seemed like a good enough reason to
stop and check it out.
We searched in between buildings and
street lights before the predicted time of the
moonrise, to try to guess about where we would
spot it. It was exciting to see a faint pinkish tint
just above the mountain and realize we were
about to witness it happening. Little by little,
Ms. Moon revealed herself, first just a slit, and
then gradually appeared as a bright orange orb
with purple, smoke-like clouds streaked across
it, almost as if with a paint brush. There
developed a yellow backlight at the top, which
then widened to circle the entire moon before
overtaking the orange to a brighter golden
white. She really did look as if she had a face.
Being a lover of fall, harvest themes, and
Halloween, I have painted the moon many
times, probably more than any other subject!
It’s always there, somewhere in our painting
this time of year. This whole experience reminded me how
much fun it is to personalize our painting and add our
favorite things. Incorporating what we love adds dimension
and joy to our work. It’s often while appreciating the world
around us that we receive the inspiration to paint.
While teaching her class last month, Mary Robinson
questioned what we had done to make the project ours. She
said, “the more you use your creativity, the more creative
you become. It’s YOUR painting.”
Maxine Thomas (soon to be seen at a chapter near you)
has a little red bird that often shows up in her
work. My favorite is to add pumpkins of any color,
wherever I can fit them in. What’s your favorite
way to creatively add a signature touch? It would
be fun to share the answer with one another at our
next chapter meeting.
Teacher Corner: Gwen Palmer recommends a
grooved tree from Viking woodcrafts for her
Jaimie Mills Price project being taught at our
October paint-in. She has also adapted the design
to fit a standing grooved tree available at Hobby
Lobby. Prep instructions are available from me
when you sign up by September 28.
In November we will be painting Christmas
Joy with Linda Sharp. She has ordered the
surfaces and they are available from me for $5,
checks payable to Linda.
Project info and description: Christmas Joy is
painted on a laser cut tall holly wood surface.
Holly boughs hang over a beautiful stroke
Christmas tree. The background is mottled and
JOY is painted on music that is decoupaged at the
bottom. Soft tints of red and green add interest to
the background. Students will learn shading
techniques and how to paint tipped strokes. This
would make a beautiful addition to your holiday
collection. It can be hung on the tree or used on a
wreath.
The sheet music and paint will be supplied. To prep,
basecoat the front of your project (check that the top holly
leaves are going in the right direction with the pattern) a
dirty white, such as Decoart Bleached Sand, or Jo Sonja
Unbleached Titanium. You may sign up for this project until
October 26.
Happy Painting!

Our projects are now placed in the Rainbow and
Summerlin libraries.
Thank you to everyone who helped put up the
displays and everyone who donated their pieces for
display. The windows look great and will be enjoyed by
many who look forward to seeing the displays every year.
I hope you also have a chance to go look at them. Then
you will have an idea of what we do each October.
Thanks again for all the participation in this project. I
will still need help removing the pieces from the libraries
on Wednesday, November 6.

Happy fall everyone, my favorite time of year. A big
thank you to Marthalene for helping me at the caring
place September 9. We had only a few people to teach,
but we had a good time.
I will be needing a helper October 14th at 10:00 a.m.
The address is 3711 E. Sunset rd. Please let me know if
anyone can help out.
Also in November, since the second Monday is a
holiday, the caring place will be closed on November 11.
We will teach Tuesday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m.
instead. I could use a helper that day also.
If anyone has been painting memory boxes and they
are finished, bring them to October’s meeting. I give them
to my husband for Palm mortuary on Boulder Hwy. His
funeral directors give them to families that have lost a
baby or a teenage child to suicide. They have been greatly
appreciated. These boxes mean a lot to these families.
Thanks for your hard work and willingness to help!

We had a productive work meeting in September. Be
assured that there is something special in store for you
this year! The Christmas party is a great opportunity for
you to introduce a friend to decorative painting and to our
local chapter of the national society. So, if you'd like to
bring a guest, please do. (Guests are at the $35 regular
party rate.)
Carole Liccardo had to pass the torch as the person
collecting the party money since she and her husband are
moving to Oceanside, CA to be closer to family. We will
miss you, Carole! Thank you for volunteering so quickly to
serve on this committee and contributing to it
wholeheartedly. We hope you can make it to the
party! Nikki Anderson has kindly agreed to take over
Carole's duties and receive your money. Please give Nikki
your $10 ASAP to ensure you have a spot at the party,
complete with party favors.
FIRST, please paint a gift for another partygoer.
Your gift should be no larger than 12”x12” for ease of
transportation. Please bring it wrapped for gifting. It does
not need to be holiday-themed nor an ornament, though
that is fine if you so choose. The gift exchange will be
anonymous as in past years (don’t put your name on the
outside of the gift, but be sure to sign your work).
SECOND, we invite you to participate in a bit of
friendly painting
competition. As part of
our party theme, you’re
invited to paint an
ornament spotlighting
Mrs. Claus. You can
paint this ornament on
anything you like, i.e. a
CD, jar lid, wood, tin, paper, blown egg, etc. Every person
who brings a painted Mrs. Claus ornament will receive a
prize. We will vote for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners
who will each win another prize, along with the envy of all
their peers.
SAVE THE DATE: Sa tu rda y , December
14, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Luncheon “Remember the
Gifts” at Los Prados Country Club, 5150 Los Prados Circle,
Las Vegas, NV 89130.
RESERVE YOUR SEAT: $10 for chapter members
($35 for nonmembers). We hope every chapter member
will join us for this special party! Please pay the fee at
your earliest convenience to Nikki Anderson. (Those
paying after November 1st will be included but may not
receive favors due to limited quantities.)
Best wishes for happy painting,
Nanette Hilton

Gwen Palmer announced that
she is expecting her
11th grandchild. Her daughter,
Gina, is pregnant and due in
the spring of 2020.
It was wonderful to see Pat
Serrano feeling well and back
at chapter enjoying the paint-in!
Happy fall, everyone!
