• Visual Style:• Two videos which have a similar visual style to my own music video are Green

Day’s “Basket Case” and Sum 41’s “In Too Deep”. The main visual elements which are similar is the way in which the videos have been edited. In both videos, the audience are shown shots of narrative and of band performance in balanced proportions. The visual styles of both of these videos make them both appear to be filmed in the early 1990’s. This feature seems to be used throughout the entire punk-pop genre, as punk-pop is an older genre. I’d like to use this visual style in my own vide and make it appear to be filmed in the early 1990’s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emGri7i8Y2Y (In Too Deep) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUTGr5t3MoY (Basket Case)

Editing• The editing in both of these videos is done effectively as it gives the audience

both narrative and band performance in balanced proportions. The audience know what is happening at all times throughout both videos because of this. The audience is shown mainly narrative in In Too Deep due to the nature of the video, however the narrative and band performance are interlinked. In Sum 41’s video, the band performance is happening at the same time as the narrative due to the fact they are both being filmed at the same place. This is something I have considered doing for my own music video as I feel it will give the audience more to watch and therefore keep them more entertained. The same thing happens with “Basket Case”, the audience are watching the band performance and the narrative at the same time in parts of the video. However, with Green Day’s video, the narrative is set away from the band performance for the majority of the video. Again, I have considered keeping the narrative and band performance away from each other for my video as I feel that I may end up boring the audience if it is all happening at the same time.

Use Of Colour• The use of colours in Basket Case is very bright. In the video, the main colours

noticed by the audience are green, blue and yellow. All the colours which feature in the music video for Basket Case are bright, making them stand out more to the audience. The bright colours have been used because of the narrative of the story and the contextual meaning behind the song. The colours keep the audience alert and keep them from getting bored, they also fit in with the song because of the upbeat nature. The band members are all wearing different coloured clothing. Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer, is wearing all black. I feel this has been done to make him stand out from the other two members. I want my lead singer to not stand out so much in my music video, seeing as it is a band performance and not a solo one. I want my lead singer to be wearing the same or similar styled clothes as the rest of the band in my video. The turquoise green and normal green colours have been used because of the band’s name “Green Day.” Sum 41’s video In Too Deep uses the colours blue and black. The colour blue has been used in their video because it has been filmed at a swimming pool; the blue represents the water. The band members are all wearing similarly styled clothes, none of them are made to stand out to the crowd.

Cinematography

• Cinematography plays a large part in the filming of both videos. The camera is usually zoomed in on the band members playing, giving the audience a close up shot. This is usually used to show the emotion of the band as they play. However, as the music video switches to showing narrative, the camera shot usually changes to a medium or long shot. I want to use these shots in my music video as it allows the audience to see everything that is happening. Sum 41’s video also uses pan shots as the narrative plays throughout the video. Again, I have considered using a variety of shots to make my music video effective for my audience.
