First Nation bands ask for locum moneyThe Upper and Lower Similkameen Indian bands are

urging the government to provide money for locums to keep Princeton Hospital emergency department open 24 hours a day.

The bands asked the minister of health to provide $500,000 to help attract locums to Princeton, which has none on staff.

Upper Similkameen Chief Charlotte Mitchell said a 24/7 emergency department at Princeton Hospital is vital because of the band’s involvement in the forestry sector.

“We recognize that you share industry and First Nations’ commitment to the safety and well being of the people of

British Columbia, and that you understand in particular the needs of those who work in the forest products industry,” Mitchell said in a letter to Minister of Health Michael de Jong.

Princeton Hospital has been closed from midnight to 8 a.m. Monday to Thursday since May 1.

Homeowners in Westridge Court likely won’t be allowed basement suites in the near future.

Residents signed a petition to keep secondary suites out of the neighbourhood after a young couple announced they wanted to create one.

Town council listened to the petition signers and decided to stop the basement suite from going into the house located in a new subdivision on the west side of Princeton.

“Some 20 people out of 37 homes in the subdi-vision have come forward with a signed document expressing that they would be very much against us

issuing this variance. This concerns me,” said Coun. Frank Armitage.

The petition said homeowners in Westridge Court purchased their property knowing it was just for single families.

They were concerned more renters would mean more vehicles on the street, which would interfere with their children playing. They pointed out there are other areas in town that allow basement suites.

Coun. Marilyn Harkness said the decision was difficult to make because the young couple needed the basement suite to help pay for their property.

“But on the other hand we have to pay attention to that many neighbours who signed a petition not wanting to see a secondary suite go into a home in their neighbourhood,” she said.


SECONDARY SUITE - Town council declined to allow a homeowner to have a basement suite in Westridge Court based on a petition from residents in the neighbourhood.


A public forum is being held June 21 at the Riverside Centre at 7 p.m. to discuss solutions to Princeton’s health care problems.

NDP health critic Mike Farnworth, MLA Harry Lali, RDOS Area H direc-tor Brad Hope, Interior Health rep-resentative Andrew Neuner and Acting Mayor Jason Earle have confirmed they are attending, said Save Our Hospital president Spencer Coyne.

Premier Christy Clark, opposition leader Adrian Dix and Minister of Health Michael de Jong declined the invite.

“The office of the premier has indicated that Premier Clark is unable to attend but we are urging her to send a representative of her government,” Coyne said.

A cure for multiple scle-rosis will be found soon if more funding is available, said two young men who stopped in Princeton on a cross-country biking fundraiser.

“Multiple sclerosis can be diagnosed in young people, most often ages 15 to 40. Children as young as two can be diagnosed with it,” said UBC neuroscience student Kevin Huang, who passed through Princeton with his friend Raymond Wong on June 7.

They left at the end of May, but encountered bad luck when their co-rider Edward Yu fractured his collar bone and shoulder blade in Manning Park. He had surgery but couldn’t continue biking with the other two.

“Canadians have one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world and MS is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada,” Wong said.

The cyclists will reach Newfoundland at the beginning of August.

They dipped their bike wheels into English Bay as a ceremonial start to their 8,000-kilometre jour-

ney and plan to do the same thing when they reach the Atlantic Ocean.

The two bikers are camping along the way, pack-ing everything they need on their bikes. Brown Bridge Pub in Princeton offered them free dinner after their long journey through Manning Park.

I must say that Duncan, during those times when he worked with you and your community, spoke so highly of all of you.

In his eyes, your love of neighbours and love of community was an inspi-ration to anyone who witnessed it.

He talked about the volunteers and how he loved working with them more than any other force because volun-teers really wanted to be there and worked with heart and soul.

They showed up with smiles, ener-gy and equipment and they were ready to get dirty. He said there is no hap-pier work crew than a volunteer work crew.

I’m not sure if you understand how much of an impact your community spirit had on Duncan. You lifted him up.

I have thought of you all so many times in the last (almost) four months.

You tend to think of the people who made him happy and your whole com-munity made him happy.

Those smiling little faces of the children made him happy.

We’re trying to keep our focus on all the wonderful influences and experiences he had in his short life and the Princeton community is right up there. I am so appreciative of that and I thank you all.

I must apologize for not writing sooner - I have thought of you so

many times but it’s still so difficult to put my thoughts into words.

I find myself going back to the pic-ture of Duncan and that little boy on their bikes and it warms my heart and makes me smile.

So a big, heartfelt thank you to the whole, wonderful community of Princeton -- you are an inspiration.

Keremeos names released in drug bust

The news is out - a story in The Province named the three Canadians under arrest in New Caledonia after police boarded their sailboat and found 200 kilograms of cocaine on March 31.

Bob and Cindy Stanley, and Gary Yuzik are reportedly being held in New Caledonia’s only prison, infa-mously known for its dirty and over-crowded conditions.

The three are well know in the Lower Similkameen and South Okanagan.

Bob Stanley worked for the Village of Keremeos for 21 years in the main-tenance department.

He became the village’s mainte-nance foreman in 2006, retiring on a long term disability in April of 2010.

Although most of council and the village CAO did not know Stanley personally, CAO Laurie Taylor said there was nothing in the files to indi-cate there were issues with Stanley’s employment.

The Stanley’s last known address was in Summerland.

In February this column asked the question: “Are B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets history?”

The answer is contained in a new draft plan from BC Hydro on how to meet future power demand. And while it’s not explicitly stated, the answer is yes.

The draft plan was released in May for discussion purposes, but so far there hasn’t been much discussion. This is surprising given some of the recommendations, such as firing up the Burrard Thermal natural gas power plant more often and buying fossil fuel power from the North American market to keep up to demand.

The plan confirms a few things that have been evi-dent for a while.

Dreams of exporting B.C. hydroelectric power are gone for the foreseeable future. And with mining ramping up along with natural gas development and population growth, BC Hydro now projects electricity demand could rise by 50 per cent over the next 20 years.

The emergence of huge shale gas sources in B.C. and across the United States has changed the North American energy picture dramatically, as U.S. electricity producers replace coal by burning cheaper and cleaner gas to ramp up power production. B.C. is losing gas market share in the U.S., its only export customer for heating fuel and electricity use.

Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially remain in place: 33 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050.

If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up considerably by 2020.

Premier Christy Clark has a new target for 2020: three lique-fied natural gas production lines feeding high-pressure tankers at Kitimat, for export to Asia.

Not only will B.C. need to buy gas-fired power from outside the province to keep up to industrial and residential demand, but the natural gas industry will need its own new gas-fired electricity

to produce LNG for export.Natural gas passed forestry as B.C.’s top

resource revenue source many years ago. In 2005, the volatile gas price spiked up

and produced $1 billion in windfall profits that allowed the B.C. government to buy a rare period of public sector labour peace through the 2010 Olympics.

Now a glut of shale gas has pushed the North American price down from its historic range of $4 to $6 per thousand cubic feet to about $2.40. Despite that low price, gas producers in B.C. are going flat out to develop the Horn River and Montney shale gas deposits in northeast B.C.

I asked David Pryce, vice-president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, why so much gas is being developed now. He said producers have made huge investments in B.C. shale gas drilling rights, and are in an international race to supply LNG to Asian countries where the price is currently four times higher than in North America.

Whatever the domestic price, B.C. gas producers have to show LNG investors such as Mitsubishi and Korea Gas that they can fill a steady procession of LNG tankers at a competitive rate.

If LNG doesn’t fly here, B.C.’s gas export market soon evapo-rates. Currently gas producers pay about $400 million a year in royalties, and that much again to buy up shale gas drilling rights. The industry already employs about 12,000 workers in B.C.

The B.C. government has little choice but to redefine its cli-mate targets. Instead of cutting domestic emissions, it will try to take credit for displacing coal power in Asia.

Fortunately, B.C.’s main coal exports are for high-grade coal used in steel-making.

Last week’s wild fire in Keremeos may be a har-binger of what’s to come this summer, if long term weather forecasts prove accurate.

It was surprising to see how aggressive fire behaviour is, even at this early point in the season. Trees were still candling on Monday morning, an hour or two into what was predicted to be a rainy week.

The fire will also, hopefully, drive home the point that there are consequences to all those in the Similkameen Valley who believe it is their right to throw a match onto a burn pile whenever they feel like it.

Even before the investigation is concluded into the fire, there is some strong evidence that it was human caused through an illegal burn.

The BC Forest Service has been trying to pound the message home since the season began that we need to be careful and conscientious when using fire outdoors.

However, all the fires that have occurred in the Kamloops Fire District this year have been human caused - and with the weekend fire in Keremeos not being an exception, it may be time for the BC Forest Service to use their authority to make an example of those who choose not to listen:

Anyone found having of an open fire ban may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the fire causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

OUCH, THAT VOICE! The Crimson Tine Players put on Glorious - a true story about a New York socialite who desperately wants to be an diva despite having an awful voice. Next showings are on June 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. and June 17 at 2 p.m.


Princeton artist George Donovan intricately paints what he lives - the cowboy lifestyle.

His rustic artwork features saddled horses, cow-boys wearing leather chaps and ranch scenes.

“I go for realism. Someone once told me my paintings look too much like photographs, but others have told me that’s exactly what they like about them,” Donovan told the Spotlight while wearing his signature cowboy hat and plaid shirt.

“It’s up to each artist to decide what they like to cre-ate.”

Donovan has been painting for eight years - a late start for the typical artist. But his creativity stems back to elementary school some 60 years ago. He did pencil drawing but stopped when he had to start working full time.

Donovan’s love of horses and inspiration for his artwork started while growing up on an acreage in North Vancouver.

He rode his horse to school everyday and left it in the field until his lessons finished.

It wasn’t until he came to Princeton that he took professional painting lessons and developed his unique style.

“I draw pictures of places I want to be, like 100

Mile House. I still ride horses so I like to draw them too,” the artist says.

He first takes a photo of the person or scene and then paints it using acrylics.

Donovan bred horses on a small ranch, but stopped when the demand fell. He know owns a couple of horses and boards three others.

He sees himself improving, particularly from when he first started.

His first painting of himself and a horse was given to his mother as a present.

“She thought it was wonderful. But when I saw it again after I had been painting for a while, I fixed it up to make it better,” he says.

Painting generally isn’t a year-round activity for the cowboy artist.

He does most of his painting in the winter when the cold days give him more time off.

“I train horses and I am a pastor at Foursquare Church, I’m usually pret-ty busy,” he says.

He is also helping out with a play his wife Esther is both directing and starring in.

Donovan’s life has gone the way it was des-tined to. The results of a test he took in ninth grade told him he would grow up to be either a cowboy or preacher.

His paintings can be seen at the Sunflower Art Gallery in Princeton.

Vermilion Forks Elementary students enjoyed their sports day on Friday May 25. Boys dressing in girls clothing and girls dressing in boys clothing—then tearing off for the finish line dragging their partner behind was the hit race for the day.

For these graduating grade 7 students, it will be their last elementary sports day.

Music instructor Myrna Coates has brought a “very nice problem” to light.

The problem is, is that there are more band stu-dents in Princeton than there are instruments to use.

“The problem is a nice one, given the fact that there is a high interest in music, however not having enough instruments for the students to use presents a real problem,” said Coates.

Although the school year is coming to a close at the end of this month, a new year with new students begins in September.

Flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones and saxo-phones are needed to equip students with an instru-ment. Drum sets are welcomed as well for students needing a set for practice at home.

Take a look through your closets and storage, if you have an instrument that is gathering dust and needs a good home, please deliver it to Vermilion Forks Elementary School or call Myrna Coates at 250-295-6642.

DOWNTOWN PENTICTONMOCK CRIME - Students at Vermilion Forks Elementary put on a pretend crime scene to test their science skills.

Students at Vermilion Forks Elementary have spent the last few weeks learning how to match fingerprints, analyze hair samples, check paper tears and decipher forgery.

Science has been exciting, espe-cially now that they are putting their skills to the test to solve mock crimes.

Pictured to the left is Shelby Bothe, who carefully removed a piece of evidence from the victim, Jade Marco.

Other students matched foot-prints, gathered evidence and inter-viewed the suspects.

After much investigation, the students were able to narrow down the list of suspicious characters, discover the motive, and ultimately identify the perpetrator.

cause was never established. Yuzik also served as president of Similkameen Country, the local Chamber of Commerce, in 2009. The Osoyoos Times revealed the names of two residents arrested during a grow-op bust on Cactus Crescent in Osoyoos on November 23, 2009.

Gary Yuzik and his wife Evelyn were arrest-ed and were alleged to have operated a grow op in the residence. They were facing charges of production of a controlled substance, but after a scheduled court appearance on Jan.13, 2010, the charges were dropped.

Most recently, Yuzik was conducting busi-ness out of an office located in the OK Corral plaza in Okanagan Falls. Sources say the office was mysteriously and suddenly abandoned several months ago.

Rumours circulated through Keremeos in March regarding the disappearance of the three when close friends did not hear from them for several weeks. Cindy and Bob Stanley.

our employees at times when Upper Similkameen Indian Band logging operation are functioning to our fullest capacity,” Mitchell said.

If a serious accident were to happen, the employee would have to be transported by ambulance to Penticton an hour and 20 min-utes away, she said.

“Those 80 minutes could mean the difference between a full recovery on the one hand and serious disability, even death, on the other,” said Lower Similkameen Chief Robert Edward in another letter to the health minister. “We understand attracting and retain-ing general practitioners to rural communities calls for longer term solutions, [but] emergency services can’t wait.”

The $500,000, which could come from the Rural General Practitioner Locum Program, could help Princeton attract locums for a year while the bands work with the government to develop a long-term strategy, Edward said.

Jon Slater, Interior Health Authoroty senior medical director,

told the Spotlight last month that the trick to providing complete emergency room coverage in Princeton is to attract locums and eventually a new doctor.

“The long-term (solution) is to bring physicians to town to establish practice... In the short-term we need to get people from out of town to help us out,” he said.

Fraser-Nicola MLA Harry Lali said doctors aren’t coming to Princeton because they can’t practice services they trained for, such as surgery and delivering babies.

“I know the Liberals like to blame doctors, and say: ‘It’s not an issue of finances. It’s an issue of doctors not wanting to come to small towns,” said Lali at the legislative assembly in May.

Princeton’s health care problem is caused by lack of money, not the number of doctors available to work in B.C., he said.

But de Jong said funding doctors is not the problem, it’s find-ing them.

“To suggest, somehow, that there is an issue around the funding of the primary caregiver in the guise of the doctor is simply inac-curate and untrue,” he said.
