After the Feminist Cultural Week, we will read out the written texts in class. Simone de Beauvoir Simone de Beauvoir was a feminist writer and thinker. She is one of the most admired women in the feminist movement. She was born on January 9 [the 9th of January], 1908, and she died on April 14 [the 14th of April], 1986. She was French. She studied maths, literature, philosophy, and became a teacher, a writer and a thinker, too. She had a lifelong lover, the existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. In her books, Simone de Beauvoir denounced women's oppression. She defended equal rights for men and women. Her most famous essay, The Second Sex (1949), was crucial for the development of the feminist movement in Western Europe. We can find her legacy in women's struggle for equal rights and freedoms, for example, when we go to school, when we choose how to live our lives, or when we go to a demo on March 8 [the eighth of March]! Now I'm going to read a quote by Simone de Beauvoir. I hope you like it!
