We use the SIMPLE PAST to talk about actions that started and finished at a specific time in the past.

So, different adverbs of time are used:

yesterday, last mont, last weeklast year, etc.

It is important to remember there are two types of verbs:

REGULAR

and...

IRREGULAR

REGULAR VERBS

For Regular verbs the simple past is formed by adding "ed" at the end of the verb:

verb + ed = simple past Play played walk walked Listen listened Watch watched

IRREGULAR VERBS

Irregular verbs don't form the past tense by adding -ed.

They suffer a change in the spelling, so...you have to memorize them!

Go – went Eat – ate Read – read etc.

The most important irregular verb is the verb "TO BE"

NEGATIVE FORMThe negative form of the simple past is formed by the auxiliary "didn't" and the verb in its infinitive form:

SUBJECT + DIDN'T + VERB (infinitive)

Examples:

I didn't go to the cinema yesterday.

You didn't phone me.

She didn't play baseball last month.
