Often, though, sunset photographs fail to capture the true beauty of the moment and leave the photographer feeling disappointed with the results. However, there are a few simple things that photographers of all levels can do to ensure that their next sunset shot is as spectacular as the sky itself.

Perhaps the most important step to getting the perfect photo of the setting sun is to plan ahead. Sunsets take place rather quickly, and the moment when the sun is framed perfectly may last just a few seconds. Photographers should prepare themselves by finding an interesting location ahead of time and arriving at least 30 minutes to an hour before the sun begins to set.

In addition to planning ahead, aspiring sunset photographers should be sure to bring the right equipment. Using a tripod will keep the camera still and will be especially helpful when using longer shutter speeds and/or focal lengths. Other important pieces of equipment include telephoto and wide-angle lenses, which allow the photographer to vary perspectives and frame more beautiful shots.
