Simulæcrum Magazine is a local e-magazine with the mission to promote photography in the Philippine scene. It aims to be a gateway for photographers and photography lovers, from theprofessionals to the talented-but-yet-to-be-discovered amateurs, to promote their work and gain nationwide exposure.

As a specialized digital magazine, Simulæcrum is solely devoted to photography and it’s artistic creations, meaning no technical information, or photography equipment or gadget reviews. Our main goal is to award the artistic message of photography and keep that focus on every succeeding issue.

Simulæcrum is all about the visual arts, dreams, ideas, and memories. It has been created out of love and passion for the art of photography, and with the hope that people will be able to usethe publication as a platform to showcase their skills and gain recognition.

Simulæcrum (plural: simulacra from Latin: simulacrum, which means "likeness, similarity"), is a representation or imitation of a person or thing.

Most of us travel and record images of places we’ve visited. All because we love the vast landscapes. More often, we find ourselves just staring and looking at the beautiful sceneries that Mother Nature has to offer. The sad thing is, change is constant, and the places we used to visit and admire won’t look the same way it has been. And those awe-inspiring moments that we’ve had might be gone forever.

In this second issue, I want to refresh and remind myself and tell everyone how and why I got interested in landscape photography as a hobby.

I hope that the contributions of the photographers featured here would inspire other aspiring photographers and in the process, serve as a remembrance and homage to our home planet, Earth.

Eric BeltranLANDSCAPE AND ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHER

Eric Beltran is a 22-year old landscape and architectural photographer who graduated from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

His interest in photography began in high school when he was captivated by the breathtaking sceneries on his travels. He decided that he wanted to be able to capture these sceneries and opted to borrow equipment from friends while saving up for his own. He knew he needed to get his own equipment especially because most of the time, these are put at risk getting a great shot.

He takes landscape photos because of his love of exploring new places. He also likes being outdoors and surrounded by nature. According to Eric, he has always been fascinated by how the light hits a scenery and how it brings it to life.

After being able to take enough shots for a portfolio, he decided to share these photos in 500px.

Artistic expression has always played a key role in taking his shots, and each composition he makes shows his vision and perception of beauty. It brings him satisfaction every time he gets the exact shot he wants. After all, a lot of patience and risk goes into most of his photographs. For every shot, there’s always a challenge. And that’s what makes landscape photography fun and interesting. Eric himself had to brace the strong winds and waves to be able to take his shots. He and his equipments have also been exposed to different weather conditions. That’s why coming prepared is also a must.

He says Ansel Adams is his inspiration because of his amazing photographs. Back then, pho-tography was much more difficult and yet Ansel Adams was able to create stunning black and white photographs. Eric’s favorites of these are the ones taken at Yosemite National Park.

He acknowledges that he owes his talent and success to God and also to his family and friends that continue to support him and his love for photography.

“I’ve always appreciated photography even when I was a kid, but only started really venturing into the art approximately 10 years ago when I got my first manual camera - a film SLR. I’ve always been fond of nature, travel, culture and exploring the human context. I told my-self, if I have a camera with me and capture the moments, I’m able to preserve it and be able to share the visuality and story to the world. I’ve learned a great deal from the works of Ansel Adams, David Alan Harvey, James Nachtwey and Steve McCurry. And up to now, I’m still learning.

If I’m able to impart something to budding photographers, it would be to breathe, appreciate, then take the shot. Don’t just click because you have a fast camera. Live the moment and be there. Remember that your photographs represent the moments you’ve just witnessed.”

NORTHERN HARBOR San Fernando Sea Port, La Union

A whisk of the sun’s light touches a portion of The Port of San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, its coastal towns and the Ilocos region mountain range. Taken from the former Wallace Air Station, I miscalculated my schedule so I arrived at the location way ahead of my plans, but it gave me more time to appreciate the scenery even without the ball of sun itself. And then I realized I have to take this shot.

LIFE AT A VOLCANIC LAKE Taal Lake, Tagaytay City


This is a scene always best photographed an hour after sunrise or during sunset, but don’t be fooled by its majestic demeanor, this view is a dangerous beauty to behold. Taal Volca-no is the Philippines’ second most active volcano, and despite the uncertainties you can see how life is teeming around it. Fishing nets bundle up along the lake’s outer regions for aquaculture. Interestingly, it also produces intriguing streaks as the wind blows from the west.

EVERYDAY LIFEMorong, Bataan


Fishermen closing in on a midday catch. It’s always important to understand poetry in motion. I’ve decided to frame this scene so that every subject is on the edge of the photo to create a dynamic shot. With the mountain range as a backdrop, it generates a feel so compact yet wide-scale. And rendering it in mono gives it a more arresting effect.

THE EARLY CATCHKirayan Sur, Miagao, Iloilo


Coming from a very early capure, these boats docked on the coastline as they prepare for another round of fishing. Plenty of people from this area, Miagao, Iloilo rely on the sea for food and trade. For this capture, I sat on the shore for more than an hour with a mug of coffee beside me, and waited for the colors I wanted.

The sea and the sunset always provide rich silhouettes. I’ve waited for the right moment to separate the shapes and let them breathe on their own space. It’s minimalism with a touch of continuity.

A GIANT AMONG MEN Mt. Apo, Davao


I never thought seeing this massive mountain even from afar is going to be like this. In its humbling presence, my jaw dropped. Add to that the vast expanse of water around me reducing me to nothing but a speck of organism. Luckily, this man here, who I believe was a pearl hunter, paddled by slowly to provide the needed juxtaposition.

“I started photography around 2010 trying different fields and various styles, until I met Mr. Manny Librodo. He is considered one of the best in the fields of portraiture and travel photography. Up to now, I consider him my greatest influence.

He opened my eyes to the wonderful world of portraits and finding beauty in unusual places. He is a master in utilizing available light. And because of such influence, almost all of my photos were shot using ambient lighting only. I never learned the technical-ities of strobes. I don’t consider it a handicap though, because it forces me to be cre-ative using available natural light.

These photos were taken at Vigan and at the Kapurpurawan rock formation site during a 5-day tour in the province of Ilocos with Manny Librodo and his special group called “5 stars” in which I am a member.

Working with talented people stimulates your creative mind. This would not be possi-ble without the brilliant models, stylists and make-up artists who joined us in the said tour.

Creating an art in every image is necessary because it defines you as a photographer. Art is a form of self-expression and it gives you an identity in your chosen field.”

“I’m a human being, age 21, who currently lives his life through photography, cycling, and some daydreaming in between. He is currently trying to gain more skills to con-tribute to himself and to humanity and trying to piece himself together to live in har-mony with the rest of humanity and the universe that surrounds it.

The first time I dabbled into photography happened at my family’s vacation in Baguio around 2009, I think, when I was taking photos with my really low-quality Sony Er-icsson mobile phone. Back then, I did what most photography beginners focused on: flowers, trees, the house decorations, the mountains, etc. Then after a short time, I stopped, and resumed in 2011. This time with a Nikon D3100 DSLR which I still use up to this day.

Admittedly, my focus is on events and concerts photography. Next in line though, would be landscapes. The thing about it is that while other forms of photography fo-cus on a subject with the rest either rendered as a background or a complete blur out, landscape photography makes the whole scene its subject. Although that doesn’t mean there’s no object in particular that is the focus of the photo. The area itself, the whole damn place, is the subject. This form of photography emphasizes on the bigger and grander scales, the world in which we belong and should share, the universe in which we’re all a part of.”

The city hall ticks as the traffic creeps within the chaos that is Manila’s roads. Inspired by the magnificent chaos that is Manila itself.

Intersections: the points in which paths meet for a brief moment and then go on their separate ways. The wonderful chaos that is Manila was the inspiration for this photo.

While some try to wait for their chance, others just keep moving forward. Manila’s traffic and the chaos it produces inspired the photo.




Manila’s roads are well renowned for their utter chaos but, if one sees the larger picture and and under-stands well-enough, there is an order, a flow, to even the most chaotic. Such kind of flow found in chaos is what inspired this photo.

A freelance photographer based in Metro Manila, Philip-pines. He predominantly covers events and does corpo-rate photos, but his real passion is in food photography.

Here, he wants to showcase a wonderful two-artist tan-dem. A fun collaboration between a photographer and a food stylist.

Carne Asada Tacos was chosen as the dish, primarily be-cause of its texture and colors. During the shoot, differ-ent styling and lighting techniques were used to create diverse looks with the same dish.
