All kinds of thermal analysis techniques base on the corresponding changes of physical properties as mass, temperature, heat etc. of substances with the changes of theirs structures, phases state and chemical properties in heating and cooling process. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA): A technique of measuring the changes of temperature difference between sample and reference substance with program controlling temperature. Thermal Gravimetry Analysis (TGA): A technique of measuring the changes of mass of substances with program controlling temperature. The instrument can test DTA and TGA in the same time and obtain the curves of DTA-T and TGA-T. Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer (DTA/TGA) Common term

Thermal analysis: A technique of measuring the changes of physical properties of substances with program controlling temperature. All kinds of thermal analysis techniques base on the corresponding changes of physical properties as mass, temperature, heat etc. of substances with the changes of theirs structures, phases state and chemical properties in heating and cooling process.

Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA): A technique of measuring the changes of temperature difference between sample and reference substance with program controlling temperature.

Thermal Gravimetry Analysis (TGA): A technique of measuring the changes of mass of substances with program controlling temperature.

The instrument can test DTA and TGA in the same time and obtain the curves of DTA-T and TGA-T. The test results are mainly applied in below research:

Instrument application

DTA curves of the clays The peak at 102.4℃ indicates the attached water was dehydrating. The peak at 102.4℃ indicates OH

group was dehydrating and the exothermic peak at 1014.6℃ indicates the crystal structure changed. These peaks are classical reaction peaks of kaolin.

The peak at 132℃ indicates the interlayer water was dehydrating. The peak at 658.4℃ indicates OH group was dehydrating. These peaks are classical reaction peaks of imvite.

Various clays have different DTA curves. The character can be applied to qualitative analysis.

Heating rate: 0~±99.9℃/min

The above three materials can be distinguished by their different thermal cracking behaviors. Identification of carbonate minerals(DTA curves) The kind of carbonate mineral can be qualitative judged by the position of the endothermic peak.

Quantitative analysis of carbon black in SBR

The rubber decomposed at 550℃ in nitrogen atmosphere and then the atmosphere were changed into air. The mass decrement calculated is 27.8% for burning of the carbon.

Quantitative analysis of enhancer in epoxy resin The resin heated in air burned and inorganic residues come into being. The residue is enhancer. The above result indicates the content of the enhancer is 66.2%.

TG curves of saccharin sodium The changes of two stages in the hydration of saccharin sodium can be seen by means of TG. The peak at

about 50℃ indicates the dehydration of attached water happened. The peak at about 130℃ indicates the crystal water was dehydrating.

DTA curve of the sepiolite (Mg8[Si12O30](OH)4(OH2)48H2O)

Three stages changes: The endothermic peak at 200℃ indicates the zeolitic and crystal water break away from the sepiolite. The

endothermic peak at 330℃ indicates the interlayer water was dehydrating. Both the peaks at 550℃ and 890℃ indicates the dehydration of the constitution water happened.

Thermolysis of PET The above result indicates the PET decomposed at about 400℃.the exothermic peak is the indicator of

burning temperature.

TG curves of the five high polymers The different decomposed temperature of the high polymers displayed in the TG curves indicates the

difference of their thermostability.

TG/DTA curves of In, Zn and Sn metals The In sample melted at 156℃ and absorbed heat of 228.22mJ in the melting process.(Zn sample was put on the reference crucible.)

TG and DTA curves of CaC2O4·H2O

Three stages reaction: Dehydration at 170℃, burning of decomposed CO at 450℃ and decomposed CO2 at 790℃. The weight loss of every stage reaction can be calculated by means of TGA and then the change of content of every kind substance can be inferred in the reaction process.
