Parent and Family Education courses are designed to provide education and support to parents and individuals raising, or caring for children and teens. On-line courses provide parents with support surrounding sibling rivalry, and adolescence.

Courses at the Secret Garden and the Growing Garden provide an atmosphere for adults and children to explore, learn and discover. Participants in the co-op and toddler programs learn about the growth and development of children through interactive experiences, and various forms of instructional support. student spotlight — Cheryl Brown

in February of 2011, I enrolled at the Martinez Adult School’s Business Training Center. I will be graduating in January 2012, with two program certificates: Executive

Administrative Assistant and Accounting Specialist. What motivated me to enroll at the Business Training Center was, first of all losing my job in the Great Recession of 2008. In addition to that, everything I heard and read from experts and economists has served to reinforce my belief that the economic downturn and job-loss crisis is not just another business cycle, but a structural change in the economy, due to globalization and new technologies. The nature of work in the United States is changing and the economy is demanding higher levels of skill and education from its workers. Learning is now a life-long career requirement and the Martinez Adult School is where it began for me.

I thoroughly enjoy the self-paced classrooms. I found that it allowed me to move as quickly or a bit slower as needed. The teachers are MAE’s best assets, as they are gems. They are very knowledgeable, accessible, helpful, dedicated, and thoroughly encouraging. One instructor, Amrita Kalsi, who teaches keyboarding, Word, and Business Formats classes, taught me that good enough isn’t good enough and to always have the highest standards of excellence. What a valuable lesson: to expect the best from yourself and to work hard to attain it! I took the entire Microsoft Office Suite to the advanced level. It was not just challenging but thoroughly enjoyable as I know it will serve me well in the business world.

My instructor for Accounting and QuickBooks Pro was Robert Cook. He is enjoyable to have as an instructor because he is easy going and endlessly patient in explaining all things accounting and the advanced levels of Excel! I wanted to earn the Accounting Specialist program certificate because it would make me more marketable in the workplace and because I have always loved numbers. I enjoyed learning accounting concepts and crunching the numbers, as well as the challenge of the advanced spreadsheet features.

Another bonus of attending Martinez Adult School is the relationships I have developed with the other students. Being around other students who are upgrading and learning new skills for the new economy provides an environment that is both stimulating and nurturing. I have made many friends here, friendships that will last long after we have graduated and moved on to new careers. Through Marilyn Aiello, the Vocational Job Developer, I am interning at the Contra Costa Housing Authority. One of the classes required for a program certificate is Career Connections. Career Connections was inspiring and informative. We designed and compiled a portfolio of our work, learned to design effective resumes, learned to answer tough interview questions, and job search techniques.

Coming here has been an amazing experience for me, personally and professionally. I feel that I am ready to go back out in the workforce with so much more to offer. Most importantly, MAE has reignited my passion for education and for learning. The instructors, my new friends, and classmates have helped discover a level of confidence in myself that I never knew existed. This is not going to be the end of lifelong learning for me; in fact it is just the beginning. After MAE, I plan to pursue a college degree. I am looking forward to the future. The best is yet to come!

martinez Adult Education graduates maintain Bright OutlookBy Greta Mart, Staff ReporterNovember 21, 2011

Over 100 family members and friends of 21 Martinez Unified School District students gathered Friday to celebrate their loved ones’ graduation.

Graduation? In November?

While the vast majority of MUSD students are regaled with pomp and circumstance each June as they collect their diplomas, Friday’s honorees were just as proud to have completed their studies and eager to turn their gaze towards the future.

The graduates – Martinez Adult Education students enrolled in the MAE’s Business Training Center – often held one or more jobs while completing their respective programs.

The Business Training Center, located on the Martinez Adult Education campus at 600 F Street, offers certification programs in accounting, medical billing, medical transcription and Microsoft Office Suite mastery.

Each quarter, the BTC awards certificates to 15-25 graduates, so graduation ceremonies at the MAE campus are more habitual happenings than the once-a-year commemoration at say, Alhambra High School.

This week, two students featured in a March Gazette article received their diplomas.

Pacheco resident Andrea Vicochea and Martinez’s Kelly Homan House completed their respective programs, executive administration certification and an associate degree in medical coding.

During their studies, the two established a business attire clothing closet. The Closet’s inventory is offered cost-free to any MAE student who needs an extra sartorial edge for job interviews.

Vicochea and Homan House spearheaded the creation of the free closet and led their fellow Business Ethics classmates in formulating a plan to create a repository of donated clothes that would assist the school’s students in landing jobs upon graduation.

Now MAE students can come into The Closet and pick out an entire outfit complete with accessories.

The atmosphere in the campus auditorium on Friday was one of mutual support and camaraderie.

Graduate May Bayani offered an inspirational speech, telling her classmates “there’s one job out there for each of us, we just need to find it.”

Training SchedulesClasses are held 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. daily. Students may take individual courses of work towards a Program Certificate by completing the required coursework in a specific career area. Job search assistance is available for students who complete training.
