“The Member to Member program is an excellent program for local businesses not only for the owners but also the employees. In our office, our employees have used the cards when going to get Subway for lunch on occasion, which lets us share the discounts with them as well. As a business we have had a few customers mention the discount when seeking new services, in which has given us some new business relationships.”

Consider Membership in GARMAby Walt Tuchalski, Member, Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants’ Association

Pathway of Preservation: Leaving A Legacy in Gettysburg

It’s finally here! Welcome to the 150th Commemoration of the Anniversary of the Gettysburg Civil War Battle. Years of the preparation and planning for this significant marking of the historic event are unfolding even as you read this article, and GARMA members have been plugged in and informed about all aspects of the event thanks, in part, to their GARMA membership. Very few small business owners could attend all the meetings leading up to this

Commemoration, but GARMA representatives were at the planning tables and briefings helping to share the interest and concerns of their fellow members, and providing feedback, information, documents, ideas and links to all members to help keep them up to date and informed all along the way. That is one of the most unique values of a GARMA membership - being connected into the fabric of this community.

May your experience this special 150th Anniversary Week be everything you hoped it would be!

July is a perfect time to consider joining the Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants’ Association (GARMA) in time to reap the rewards of membership associated with the Late Summer, Back to School and Holiday shopping seasons. GARMA’S mission is to help create, promote, advertise, and represent the better business interest of the membership of the organization. As such, GARMA is preparing for their annual $1,000.00 Christmas Shopping Giveaway, decorating the shopping district for Christmas, arranging Santa’s annual residency at his Lincoln Square Shanty, and developing the season’s advertising campaign. Plus, member businesses can take advantage of the GARMA Gift Certificate program at no additional cost, and GARMA members can actively participate in monthly 1st Friday - Gettysburg Style promotions and the Winter Coupon Booklet as well.

The Association is a non-profit corporation recognized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. GARMA has over 80 active members. They are a consortium of local entities that believe healthy businesses create a healthy local economy for the benefit of the entire community. GARMA’s membership includes retail stores, restaurants, financial institutions, local media, utilities, attractions, professionals, service providers, accommodations, and non-profit organizations.

If you have ever thought about joining GARMA, now is the time to act! New members can join the group for the balance of 2013 and take advantage of all our end of year promotions leading into the Holidays. That’s a lot of value for a very small investment. Find complete details are in GARMA’s on-line membership application.

Visit GARMA’s website at www.gettsyburgretailmerchants.com to learn more about the organization, its member benefits, and to print out a membership registration form under the “How to Join” tab in the navigation bar. You will find contact information should you want to schedule an appointment to discuss membership with a current GARMA representative.

GARMA’s next 1st Friday - Gettysburg Style is slated for Friday, July 5, when participating members will offer sales, special events, extra hospitality, and more during their extended evening hours. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 28, when the semi-annual Gettysburg Outdoor Antique Show will return to the four streets radiating out from Lincoln Square featuring the wares of over 125 dealers from up and down the entire Eastern Seaboard. Learn more at the Events page online at www.gettysburgretailmerchants.com or by contacting GARMA Board Representative Walt Tuchalski at 717.309.2482 and [email protected].

ACEDC Announces Partnership with EDC Finance Corporation

The Adams County Economic Development Corporation is pleased to announce a new regional partnership with the EDC Finance Corporation. The purpose of this strategic alliance is to offer the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 504 loan program to businesses in Adams County. Through a signed strategic alliance memorandum Adams County EDC agrees to market the SBA 504 program to businesses in our community while EDC Finance Corporation retains the responsibilities of packaging and servicing the SBA 504 loans.

“EDC Finance Corporation is pleased to expand its regional footprint into the Adams County economic development community, and to have the opportunity to bring our expertise regarding the SBA 504 loan program into this county. This program has been integral in helping businesses in Lancaster and York Counties to grow and prosper and the continued expansion of this program will only benefit small business owners in Adams County,” said David Nikoloff, President of EDC Finance Corporation.

The SBA 504 program has been a tremendous asset for businesses in Lancaster and York Counties, and this alliance presents area businesses with a valuable resource for investment in their companies, while providing the EDC’s with another tool to help support growing companies.

“The Adams County Economic Development Corporation is pleased to partner with EDC Finance Corporation and the Small Business Administration to offer the businesses of Adams County another tool to grow, expand or relocate their business and create new job opportunities in our community. Our partnership with EDC Finance Corporation is a natural one as we currently function as regional partners to market economic development opportunities for South Central Pennsylvania. We very much look forward to continuing that relationship and creating this new one,” said Robin Fitzpatrick, President, Adams County Economic Development Corporation.

The partnership is designed to provide small and medium sized companies in Central Pennsylvania with long-term, fixed rate financing which is typically available only to larger businesses. A company’s access to the SBA 504 loan program makes a substantial impact on its ability to grow its business, expand facilities and create jobs.

EDC Finance Corporation has approved 56 SBA 504 projects for more than $46 million in funding since being designated a Certified Development Company in 2008. The SBA 504 program has assisted businesses of all varieties; including restaurants, manufacturers, hotels, service providers and medical practices. The SBA 504 program is designed to assist for-profit businesses in expansion or relocation efforts.

For more information about the Adams County Economic Development Corporation and EDC Finance Corporation’s partnership or the SBA 504 program, please contact: Ms. Kaycee Kemper, Director of Business Development, Adams County Economic Development Corporation, 717.334.0042 ext 2 or [email protected].

Gettysburg rose to the challenge of caring for the wounded (24,000 wounded cared by 800 women left in town), dealing with the 50,000 casualties of the battle and handling the horrible aftermath that devastated the town. Once Lincoln came to give the Gettysburg Address, the town’s identity had been forged in steel. The legacy of the strength, commitment and vision of those early citizens continues today in the spirit of Main Street Gettysburg.

Millions of people internationally visit Gettysburg to experience and honor our nation’s profound story about its fight for democracy and freedom. Main Street Gettysburg is committed to preserving the historical, physical and inspirational legacy of the town. Main Street Gettysburg’s initiatives preserve historic buildings, streets and the ambiance of the town and tell the stories of both the men who fought here and the inspirational citizens who left their legacy in Gettysburg.

You too can leave a lasting legacy in Gettysburg with an engraved, commemorative brick for you or someone special.

“When Good Leaders Lose Their Way”

The keynote speaker is Mark Whitacre who came to public attention in 1995 when, as president of the BioProducts Division at Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), he was the highest-level corporate executive in U.S. history to become an FBI whistleblower. For three years (1992–1995), Whitacre acted as an informant for the FBI, which was investigating ADM for price fixing. In apparent retaliation for his role as an informant, ADM investigated Whitacre’s activities and, upon discovering suspicious activity, requested the FBI investigate Whitacre for embezzlement. As a result of US $9.5 million in various frauds, Whitacre lost his whistleblower’s immunity, and consequently spent eight-and-a-half years in federal prison. Whitacre’s story inspired the film “The Informant,” which stars Matt Damon.
