Construction Authority (BCA), industry stakeholders and institutes of higher learning (IHLs), the
Roadmap aims to attract and retain a strong pipeline of local talent for the BE sector.
Key initiatives under the Roadmap would help drive transformations in the sector to offer
conducive work environments, better human resource (HR) practices, and meaningful careers to
enhance attraction of local talents, including females. Beyond these, the Roadmap would also
focus on raising awareness on the sector through structured internships for students and
attachment programmes for teachers.
A key highlight of the Roadmap launch was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) between BCA and the Construction Industry Joint Committee (CIJC) to promote the
adoption of good HR practices in BE firms through a new pledge initiative, Pledge for a Better Built
Environment Workplace.
The launch of the Roadmap marks an important milestone to the 5-year journey that MND, BCA,
the BE sector and IHLs are embarking on. With the sustained and synergistic partnership, the
sector is set to undergo greater positive transformative changes to become the workplace of
choice.
The CIJC composition consists:
• Association of Consulting Engineers Singapore (ACES)
• Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES)
• Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore (REDAS)
• Singapore Contractors Association Ltd (SCAL)
• Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA)
• Singapore Institute of Buildings Limited (SIBL)

Great Asian Street Symposium (GASS) Conference 2014
The Great Asian Street Symposium (GASS) was initiated in 2001 at the Department of
Architecture, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore (NUS). In
response to the long-standing and dire lack of truly Asian perspectives in the literature and
research of Asian cities, GASS aimed to establish an Asian-rooted centre of excellence to foster,
both regionally and internationally, exchange and communication of ideas and studies within this
field. Over the past decade, GASS has successfully shared and integrated cutting-edge debates
and discussions on many problems and challenges that confront Asian cities and their public
spaces, such as traffic congestion, air pollution, social segregation, environmental degradation,
and slum proliferation.
In December 2014, an international gathering of academics, architects, urban planners,
researchers, policy makers, and perhaps politicians will descend in Singapore to participate in an
exchange of visions, concepts, and best practices for our Asian urban places at the Great Asian
Streets Symposium (GASS) 2014. It is a conference that will benefit the architects/professionals in
Singapore.
GASS 2014, titled as Asian Urban Places, is the sixth symposium that will be held in Singapore at
the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 11th – 12th December 2014. Keynote speakers
include:
• Professor Jurgen Rosemann, Department of Architecture, NUS, Singapore
• Professor Zhang Jie, Department of Architecture, Tsinghua University, China
• Professor Jeffrey Hou, College of Built Environment, University of Washington, US
Additional information about the symposium can be found at www.gass2014.org
