Design Guidance
6 | United Roofing Products
Structural
Roof profiles are designedto be supported by steel ortimber purlins, with thebroad valley resting on thepurlin. For 0.7mm thickprofiles, purlins should beset at 1.8m maximumcentres. Consult URP forguidance on setting purlinsat greater centres. Wallprofiles should be fixedwith their narrow valleysagainst the side rails. All profiles should beisolated from preservativetreated timber by PVCbarrier tape applied to thebearing face.
Supporting steelworkshould meet tolerances ofBS EN 1090-2:2008+A1:2011 and fixing planeson purlins should be lessthan L/600 apart (where Lis the purlin spacing).
The minimum roof pitch is 4˚.
Fixings
Trapezoidal Roof and Wall profilesshould be fixed through the valleys tothe purlin with either carbon steel orstainless steel self-drilling screws havinga 19mm integral washer. The screws canbe supplied with loose coloured caps orfactory coloured heads.
Fixings to Light section steel should beat least 25mm long, and embedmentinto timber purlins should be at least30mm.
Corrugated sheets should be fixed toLight section with a 65mm screw with aBaz washer, 60mm into timber.
Laps and sealing
Side laps are formed by lapping the femalecrown of a profile over the male crown ofthe adjoining profile. The exposed edge ofa lap should face away from the prevailingwind. The lap should be sealed with a single6 x 5mm run of butyl sealant applied tothe crown of the first panel (see figure 1)and stitched with a 22m long self drillingmetal to metal fixing with a 16mm washer.
End laps are required where there areseveral tiers of panels on a roof. The upperprofile should overlap the lower one by150mm. There should be two 6 x 5mmruns of butyl sealant applied to the headof the lower profile (see figure 2). The lapsare fixed by the fixing screws for the tail ofthe top profile.
Where four profiles overlap additionalruns of butyl sealant are required betweenthe crowns of all four sheets.URP1000/32 fixings

Sitework
Delivery, handling and
storage
Profiles are supplied bandedwhen delivered to site.Offloading is the responsibilityof the customer. Profiles canbe off-loaded directly to theroof, or to a storage area, which should be dry and wellaway from traffic. Packs maybe stacked using suitablewooden bearers and packers.Bearers should be placedabove each other.
Handle profiles carefully toavoid marking weather sheets.Lift sheets from the pack – donot drag them. Observe sitehealth and safety proceduresand the results of manualhandling and otherassessments.
Maintenance
It is good practice to carry outannual inspection of thebuilding exterior and to carryout any remedial workidentified during theinspection. Minor scuffing ofthe colour coating should notbe treated. Deeper scratcheswhich reach the substrateshould be repaired with touch-up paint.
The touch-up paint shouldonly be applied to the originalscratch using a fine paintbrush. As touch-up paint willdry to a slightly differentcolour to the original coating,so the area which is touchedup should be kept as small aspossible.
Preparation
Before fixing sheets determinethe direction of the prevailingwind and check the squarenessand accuracy of the steelwork.Check all sheets for damagebefore fixing.
Installation
Lay sheets in the sequenceshown (figure 1), keeping thelower run one sheet ahead ofthe higher run to ensure thatthe higher sheet is alwayslapping over the lower sheet.
Apply a single continuous beadof 6 x 5mm butyl sealant thelength of the side lap on sheet 1 (figure 2). Positionsheet 2 adjacent to sheet 1 withthe foot of the sheet to theeaves. Fix sheet 2 and stitch at400mm centres on the overlap
Apply two beads of 6 x 5mmbutyl sealant to the head ofsheet 1 and 2 approximately75mm apart (figure 3). Positionsheet 3 and fix through thecentre of every trough betweenthe two runs of sealant.
If fixing to intermediate purlins(no laps), see design guide onpage 6 for fixing layout.

Environmental Credentials
We are keen to reduce the impact our business and processes have on
the environment and the communities we live in.
While the introduction of sustainable construction methods is a
challenge to the whole construction industry, our main raw material
– steel – is widely recycled: 85 - 90% of steel from demolition goes for
re-use and 40% of steel used in new construction has been recycled.
By using modern machinery and upgrading our facilities we are
continually reducing the impact of our products on the environment,
and improving their contribution to the long-term performance of
buildings.
