I am so honoured to have won the competition. It is quite literally a dream come true. Winning has accelerated my career and opened doors to some wonderful and exciting opportunities. Thank you for this incredible platform.Catriona Morison, Scotland BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, and Joint Song Prize Winner, 2017

From Saturday 15 until Saturday 22 June 2019 the city of Cardiff, not to mention the BBC’s airwaves, will be filled with the glorious sounds of 20 of the world’s finest young singers competing for the title of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.

Our selection panels have been listening to all the wonderful vocal talent that applied to take part and, while it was quite a challenge, I’m sure you will agree that they’ve chosen a fine selection of singers. Cardiff Singer is a once in a lifetime experience for our 20 hopefuls, with the opportunity to sing to audiences in our two wonderful venues - St David’s Hall and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama - as well as thousands more via the BBC’s networks, and three prizes to be won.

Our audiences are famous for their enthusiasm and expertise, and they love to disagree with the jury! The whole Cardiff Singer team is looking forward to welcoming you to Wales in June for all the drama and excitement – don’t miss the chance to secure your tickets.

David Jackson, Artistic Director BBC Cardiff Singer of the World

The Audience PrizeThe Audience Prize is voted by our audiences, and presented during the grand final. Winners receive The Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize, £2,500 and a crystal trophy. This year the prize is dedicated to the memory of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the much missed and beloved baritone who became Cardiff Singer of the World in 1989. Dame Joan Sutherland was patron of the competition for many years and a huge supporter of Dmitri, so it is fitting that her husband, Richard Bonynge, has agreed to present the Audience Prize Trophy this year in his wife’s name.

Fringe EventsIn 2019, we are again organising our series of fringe events throughout the week, and you can enjoy a wider range of events than ever across Cardiff and beyond. Pre-concert talks, Masterclasses, recitals and films will enhance the experience and deepen your enjoyment of the competition. Full details will be released over the coming weeks – keep an eye on our website for details. www.bbc.co.uk/cardiffsinger

BBC Cardiff Singer of the World BBC Cardiff Singer of the World is a life changing experience for 20 young singers at the start of their professional careers. Over 400 gifted singers applied from all over the world, and the final 20 have made it through a rigorous selection process for the chance to perform in front of our jury of distinguished experts. The singers are accompanied by two world class orchestras – BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Ewa Strusińska and WNO Orchestra, conducted by Ariane Matiakh. The performances are broadcast across the BBC to audiences around the UK and beyond, and the five strongest singers are selected to compete in the exhilarating final at St David’s Hall. The singer named BBC Cardiff Singer of the World is presented with the Cardiff Trophy and £20,000.

The Song Prize The Song Prize puts our singers well and truly under the spotlight. Performing some of the most beautiful Lieder and art songs in the repertoire, the singers are accompanied by internationally renowned pianists including Llyr Williams and Simon Lepper. The intimate recitals take place at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, with the final at St David’s Hall. The winner receives the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Patron’s Cup and £10,000.
