Principal’s Report
I would like to welcome our Year 7 families for 2012 to our school. This is the first of many Parent News you will receive. During week 9 we had a very successful orientation of Year 7 into the school. I am sure you will agree they will be looked after by very competent and caring Year Advisers in Mrs Rochelle Dooley and Mrs Jacqueline Simpson. As I advised when I spoke to Year 7 and parents I would again like to highlight that members of our school community are welcome into this school.
As the year draws to a close we prepare to recognise the achievements of our students throughout the year, with our annual Presentation Night. This is an opportunity for the school community to come together to celebrate our school and student achievements for the year. The Sports Presentation was very successful and I am sure our parents will support the Presentation Night.
In this final Parent News for 2011 I would like to thank and pay tribute to the efforts of both parents and the community in Singleton High School who have enabled our staff and students the opportunities to enhance their learning.
I would like firstly to acknowledge the work of the P&C who have assisted throughout the year and have supported many worthwhile projects. Remember the P&C gives you the chance to find out about and influence what goes on in your school.
Secondly, Mrs Tracey deGraaf and her canteen volunteers who have given up their time to ensure our students have nutritional meals and have provided much needed funds and resources to the school; and our ladies in the uniform shop for ensuring our students do have the correct uniform and are fine ambassadors of Singleton High School.
Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the work of Mrs Jacqui Bamberry, who will be moving to Warners Bay. Jacqui has been a tireless supporter for the school, involving herself in P&C, volunteering in the canteen and working as the uniform shop coordinator. On behalf of the staff and students we thank Jacqui for her support, and wish her all the best as she gets closer to the surf.
Your students should have received their yearly report, either with this Parent News or by hand this week. If you have any concerns you can contact the school before the end of term.
You would be aware that the last two days of term are spent in staff development days. Staff will be preparing for students making their transition to high school by looking at their individual learning plans. Time will be spent looking at welfare issues through
our PBL program. During their staff development time all staff will work through their own personalised professional learning program.
As we move into 2012 one of the challenges that we will face will be the implementation of a National Curriculum. Staff will have the opportunity to look at ways they can implement this curriculum to enhance their skills to improve learning in the classroom.
I wish all of my students, and their parents a safe and happy Christmas break. I look forward to working with you in 2012.

The Year 7 and 8 Boy‟s Touch Football Team
competed in the State Championship. They came 5th
in the state. Congratulations to them all.
Educational Grants on Offer
The Hunter River Group of the Country Women‟s Association of NSW has available two Educational Grants for 2012. They are as follows:
1. Hunter River Group Educational Grant: to the value of $500 tenable by a student entering Tertiary Education, whether TAFE, college or university and residing within the bounds of the Hunter River Group (Murrurundi in the north, Belmont in the South, Merriwa to the west and Nelson Bay to the east). Mature age students may also apply and the grant will be awarded on a „needs basis‟.
2. Jean Latham Educational Grant: to the value of $300 tenable by a Year 11 student entering Year 12 and residing within the bounds of the Hunter River Group.
Forms must be returned to Singleton Branch no later than 7 February 2012.
Late entries will not be accepted.

Agriculture Report
One of the main events occurring on the Agriculture plot has been the temporary acquisition of dairy goats that are in kid. A huge vote of thanks needs to be conveyed to Alex Berry for lending us these goats, the hay and rations, and his time and tuition. They have proved a marvellous hit with our students, staff and education programs.
Year 9 Agriculture and selected students attended a local excursion to the butchers for meat preparation, Berry‟s goat farm and Bower‟s beef farm for a beef cattle management demonstration. Thanks needs to be conveyed to Thomas Tender meats, Trunks meats, and the Berry and Bower families for their valued assistance.
The current activities on the Agriculture plot include fencing and yard development activities with Primary Industry classes, sunflower growth activities with Year 8 Design and Technology classes, tomato, watermelon, herb growth activities, lamb weighing and sales, vegetable harvesting and on-going egg hatching activities with Plymouth Rock and Langshan poultry breeds.
Future developments for 2012 include yard extension work for Year 12 Agriculture, the acquisition of cattle judging shirts and new sheep breeds.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the businesses and people who have assisted us throughout 2011. All the best for Christmas and beyond!

Singleton High School Remembrance Day Service
Singleton High School held its Remembrance Day Service on Thursday, 10 November. The guests in attendance included Lieutenant David Evangeledes and Sergeant Michael Elliott from the Singleton Infantry Centre, Mr Arthur Francis, OAM from the Singleton Legacy Group, Mr Mick McCrone and his colleagues from the Returned and Services League Sub-Branch.
The school presented a cheque for $493 to the Legacy Group as money raised within our school from the sale of Legacy badges. Mr Arthur Francis presented to the school, certificates for students who were involved in the community Legacy collection. The school won the state award for Champion High School in the Anzac Day competition. A shield and cheque for $1 000 was presented to Mr Jarrett.
Our Infantry Centre representative, Lieutenant Evangeledes is in the 3
rd Battalion RAR,
Sergeant Michael Elliott is on exchange from the United States. He serves in the high profile United States Rangers.
These soldiers presented Flag Raising certificates to Rebecca S, Jessica S, Josie S and James H. The Australian National Flag Association donated the certificates.
The final presentation was the Long Tan awards presented to Year 11 student, Teliah B and Year 12 student Ethan A. The Department of Veterans‟ Affairs sponsored these awards with remuneration support packages of $250 and $500.
The formal part of the service followed, with a scripture reading by Sarah Niewenhuise from the Book of Romans, Chapter 12. Sarah and Cameron J then spoke on: „What is Remembrance Day?‟, and „The symbolic reference / purpose of Red Poppies and Rosemary‟.
Due to the unavailability of our regular trumpeter, Arthur B, a student from the Singleton Heights Primary School capably played the Last Post and Reveille for the ceremony. Captain Leanne Bennett from the Singleton Christian Education Association read the Prayer of Benediction.
Singleton High School was represented by our Captains and Vice Captains at the community Remembrance Day Service on the 11 November. They laid a wreath for Singleton High School. Student, Breanna D sang the National Anthem

Deputy’s Report
It is with great pleasure that I briefly mention what a fantastic year 2011 has been for students and staff at Singleton High School. Whilst seemingly each year goes more quickly than the preceding, it essentially is due to the amount of activity that occurs each and every day. Of course our main focus is the promotion of excellence in academic pursuits and always will be, but a well rounded student goes beyond expectations.
The cultural, social, welfare, sporting and community endeavours are ensuring our students will have a bright future career wise as well as be great citizens in the community in which they live.
The way to keep up with what is happening is to check out our websites, Sharepoint and Millennium. We also invite all parents and carers to get involved in some of our activities to see how schooling has changed over the years and also the changes modern schooling can make to a young person.
Year 7 2012 are to arrive on Monday, 30 January. Another delightful group I am told. We certainly are looking forward to reacquainting ourselves with them. On that Monday all Year 7 will meet at approximately 9:20am in East Quad and move to the Multi Purpose Centre. Once there we will check classes, arrange timetables, assist new arrivals, have an address by the Principal and Deputy Principal.
Year Advisors will talk and then there will be whole group activities until recess (11:37am).
Years 11 and 12 commence Tuesday, 31 January and go straight into the hard work.
Years 8, 9 and10 will join the rest of the school on Wednesday, 1 February.

It was wonderful to meet all our 2012 Year 7 students at Orientation Day on Monday, 5 December. The students came through the Ka-Wul Education and Cultural Resource Centre in 4 groups. They met the Aboriginal Education workers and were given a brief description of what each one of us does and who to access for assistance.
The students were really well behaved and we hope they will utilise the Ka-Wul Centre next year to take advantage of all the help and assistance that is available there. Sharon, David and Jo are looking forward to working with all the new students in 2012 and don‟t forget everyone is welcome so our Aboriginal students are able to bring friends to the centre.
We would like to wish all of our students and their families a safe and happy holiday.

P & C News
On 21 November, the P&C had our final meeting for the year at the Diggers in town.
Kath Prudence, Head Teacher of Mathematics Faculty filled us in on all the great things happening. Recently the school held a World of Maths Day which was a great success. The P&C was proud to help support the day so that all the students could enjoy the experience. The Da Vinci program was run this year and Singleton High School came a very close second. Well done to all involved.
Julie Stewart from the Special Education Faculty informed us that the computers and data projector funded by the P&C are operational.
The P&C are committed to enhancing the education of all students at Singleton High School.
Our first meeting next year is on 20 February in the common room at 7.30pm. We try to keep our meeting brief. They are a great way for new parents to meet other parents and have a say on what happens at school. For more information contact Sally Avard on 0412 610 775
Healthy Lunchbox Ideas
It is important to provide your child with healthy, nutritious and filling lunches and snacks at school.
The School A to Z website has some great quick and easy lunchbox ideas.
The site has printable recipes and food tips as well as allergy buster lunches for the most sensitive.
And remember as the weather warms up, freeze a water bottle and place in the lunchbox (wrap in a cloth to keep food dry) to keep food at a safe temperature for consumption.

A social group for teens
Firstchance is currently seeking applications from
Teens with Aspergers Syndrome and High Functioning Autism to participate in a social group. We are able to provide this opportunity to young people through „NIB Foundation‟ funding.
We are looking for teens who:
Are aged between 13 and 16 years,
Have a Diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome or High Functioning Autism, and
Attend a mainstream education setting.
The program will run for 8 weeks during the first school term in 2012. Parents attend a parent support group on the same premises as the Drama Club is being held.
Participants will work together with the Helen O‟Grady Drama School to have fun and experience drama in a relaxed social environment.
The program aims to support and develop social connections between teens with AS and High Functioning ASD.
Participants will be provided with opportunities to engage in a range of social activities.

Singleton High School Barista Course
On 14 and 15 November, Year 10 and 11 students participated in a Barista course.
The course consisted of a coffee making demonstration, creating coffees individually and a short test. We all enjoyed this course and had a great time.
“I recommend this course to future students, as not only was it fun, it was a great opportunity to learn how to make coffee. This could be very beneficial for future careers.”

Breakfast and our Brain!
Breakfast Research: If your hectic household has a morning rush hour like the one in our home, you may feel that you don‟t have time for a healthy breakfast. But consider what studies have shown:
Breakfast eaters are likely to achieve higher grades, pay closer attention, participate more in class discussions, and manage more complex academic problems than breakfast skippers.
Breakfast skippers are more likely to be inattentive, sluggish, and make lower grades.
Breakfast skippers are more likely to show erratic eating patterns throughout the day, eat less nutritious foods, and give into junk food cravings. They may crave a mid-morning sugar fix because they can‟t make it all the way to lunchtime on an empty fuel tank.
Some children are more vulnerable to the effects of missing breakfast than others. The effects on behaviour and learning as a result of missing breakfast or eating a breakfast that is not very nutritious vary from child to child.
Whether or not children eat breakfast affects their learning, but so does what they eat. Children who eat a breakfast containing both complex carbohydrates and proteins in equivalent amounts of calories tend to show better learning and performance than children who eat primarily a high protein or a high carbohydrate breakfast. Breakfasts high in carbohydrates with little protein seem to sedate children rather than stimulate their brain to learn.
Children eating high calcium foods for breakfast (e.g. dairy products) showed enhanced behaviour and learning.

Skills for Work and Training
TAFE – Singleton Campus
This is a FREE COURSE FOR WOMEN thinking of returning to the workforce or pursuing further education. It is designed specifically for people who want to upgrade their skills, establish career goals and develop confidence to achieve them.
Students will develop computing and job seeking skills, as well as brush up on communication, mathematics and green science in a fun, cooperative and supportive environment. This course also includes one week of Work Placement. A course related charge of $25 applies.
Classes run for 2 ½ days a week within school hours.
An information/enrolment session will be held at 10.00am on 31 January, 2012 in C block, TAFE.

Millennium Student Portal Singleton High School is proud to have the opportunity to offer the parents of students free access to information on their children via an individualized portal to the school‟s online record keeping system.
