Facts Isaac Newton was born on January 4, 1643

Born in Woolsthrope, Lincolnshire, England, UK

Died on March 31, 1727, in London, England

Was a Philosopher, Mathematician,

Astronomer, Physicist, and Scientist

Was abandoned by mother and left with

maternal grandmother until age 12

More Facts Went to the University of Cambridge,

Trinity College, and The King’s School

His love for science did not go unnoticed

Graduated with no honors or distinctions

Earned the title of scholar

In 1667 he was elected a minor fellow at

Trinity College

Accomplishments

Invented the reflecting telescope in

1668

In 1687 this magnum opus –

Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia

Mathematica was published

Sir Newton also discovered gravity.

Laws of Motion

The Laws of Motion are defined as

“The three laws that govern the

motion of material objects”

In Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia

Mathematica Sir Isaac Newton

formulated his Three Laws of Motion.

Page 6: Sir Isaac Newton His life and accomplishments By Kelsey Zolac

First Law of Motion

“An object in motion stays in

motion (same speed and

direction) unless acted upon

by an unbalanced force. An

object at rest stays at rest

unless acted upon by an

unbalanced force.”

Page 7: Sir Isaac Newton His life and accomplishments By Kelsey Zolac

Example of Law 1

An example of this law is a

car driving at a constant

speed in one direction

then hitting a brick wall.

In this case the car was an

object in motion until it hit

the brick wall, the

unbalanced force.

Second Law of Motion

The second Law of Motion says,

“Acceleration is produced when a

force acts on a mass. The greater

the mass (of the object being

accelerated) the greater the

amount of force needed (to

accelerate the object).”

F=MA

Example of Law 2

An example of Law 2 is

when someone is trying

to push a car, but can

not due to the fact the

car has a greater mass

than the person, and

the person isn’t pushing

hard enough.

Third Law of Motion

“For every action there is

an equal and opposite re-

action,” is the third law

of motion.

Page 11: Sir Isaac Newton His life and accomplishments By Kelsey Zolac

Example of Third Law

An example of the

third Law of Motion is a

balloon releasing air.

The air is let out in the

opposite direction the

balloon itself is going.

Gravity Sir Newton discovered gravity

when he saw an apple fall from a

tree.

Realized some force must be

acting upon the apple to make it

fall

Newton used the idea of gravity to

explain the astronomical

observations of Kepler

Conclusion Sir Isaac Newton discovered

some of the biggest things in

science such as gravity and the

Laws of Motion.

His findings will be taught to

many generations to come
