1. SISTERS OF MERCY - KENYA
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The Sisters of Mercy are an International Congregation of vowed religious women in the
Catholic Church. They draw their attention from Catheine McAuley who founded the order in
1831 in Ireland. They have spread throughout the world in countries which include:
South Africa, England, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Kenya, France, Nigeria, Peru, United States, and
Zambia where they continue the work which their founder initiated.
In Kenya they came in 1956, and they have spread to various parts of the country as far as
Turkana. They have a special focus of working with people who are poor, marginalized
and disadvantaged by socio-economic, geographic, political, and environmental conditions
because of systems, structures, and strategies that make people and the environment poor.
They have invested and worked tirelessly in the alleviation of poverty through instituting
various schools, colleges, vocational training facilities, rehabilitation facility, health care,
spiritual formation and social ministries.
The map below shows how the sisters of Mercy have spread to various parts of the
country.
This map shows the initial areas where the Sisters of Mercy had their centers in. (Areas such as Ngarariga, Masii are not part of the Centre’s at this time)

2. Mercy Vocational Training Centre (MVTC) – CHEPARARIA
2.1 Introduction
MTVC is an institution which was established in May, 2000 by the Sisters of Mercy.
The school is located in a serene environment which is conducive for learning and
promoting strong Christian values. The aim of the Centre is to provide education for
girls and young women in various skills including cookery/nutrition, machine
knitting and dressmaking, tailoring, entrepreneurship, literacy Kiswahili/English,
computer classes and also artisan. These courses are over and above those being
offered to the less able students who many have no formal education. These are
girls/women who are either drop outs, primary school leavers or have never attended
school, or those who have been rescued in the community and are in urgent need of
skills through which they can earn their living. Most of them come from poor
families where they face lots of challenges and hardships.
West Pokot has one of the lowest literacy levels in Kenya .The glaring needs can be
attributed to the adherence to retrogressive cultures embraced by the Pokot
community such as FGM –Female Genital Mutilations, Early and forced marriage,
cattle rustling among other things. It is felt that a girl has little value in the area and
can be married off and is of little value in her household. Both boys and girls are held
back from education chances by the cultural values of tending to animals for boys and
early marriage for girls.
In respond to the needs of the People the Sisters
of Mercy through family and friends made a
great contribution to the development of this
needy area. They erected a nursery school, a
skills training facility, a small dormitory and a
chapel for the secondary school students.

3. ADMINISTRATION The college is run by Sr. Veronica Quigley who is a Sister
from the Sisters of Mercy. She is assisted by Ms Linah Lelei
and Ms Mercy Chebet
The Sr. in Charge is tasked with inspiring and motivating staffs
and giving them support they need so that they can also
perform their duties with due diligence.
She is also responsible of ensuring that the culture and values
of the Sisters of Mercy is felt and reciprocated to all the people who visit the college.
It’s through their dedicated efforts that girls are able to sit for their grade tests and examinations
through KNEC examinations and pass. Many who have passed through the school have recieved
employment in various companies, others start their own businesses e.g. Salons and Hair beauty
shops around Chepararia and also in Kitale.
Together with the Management they also introduced internship programs for the girls/students
who are in their final year of their education to gain real life training experience on their field of
study and also to liaise with other people in different areas with an intention of forming an all-
round individual who is well suited to the current market demands in an ever changing society.

The staff houses can accommodate 8 teachers each in a two bedroom house. This enables the teachers to dedicate their time in the college
2 Multi-Purpose Hall and Kitchen
Also the Sisters of Mercy are in the process of acquiring a piece of land near the school
which might help in building and extending the College and hence offering various
courses to the local people.
The college through collaboration of the local government has established a water
program in which the local government was to drill a water borehole to provide water for
the students since the area is arid.
