Sit on Top Kayak - Why It Is Becoming so Popular!
Author – M.Zaki – http://Fishing-Kayak.net
What is a sit on top kayak and how does it compare to other types of kayaks? The kayak that you
can sit on is also referred to as a molded kayak and is used for both recreation and sporting
purposes. Originally they were used and designed by inhabitants in the Arctic for traveling on rivers
and lakes. These boats have a long and rich history dating back to 4000 years ago or more. They
have traditionally been used for fishing and hunting and are able to seat 1 to 2 people.
A sit on top kayak uses a paddle with two blades and is a versatile and lightweight way to get
around. Today, people in the north are still using them as a mode of transportation for their fishing
and hunting needs, but they have also become quite popular for use as a recreational sport as well.
Why sit on top kayaks have become so popular
Kayaking in one of these boats is adventurous and exciting. Trying to stay on board one of these
kayaks when you're battling rapids is the thrill of the game and more and more people are becoming
involved in it. While these boats are often used as a fishing kayak or for traveling on the open water,
you'll often see regular kayaks being used this way while sit on top kayaks are used quite often for
sporting.
Sit on top fishing kayaks
Some avid fishermen prefer to use the sit on top kayak since they'll be able to fish from different
positions. As well, there is a lot more storage to be found in a kayak of this type than in any other
kayak available. When you envision a kayak that you can sit on, think of a molded tube that you'll be
on instead of sitting in.
You're going to get wet
Part of the adventure of owning a sit on top kayak is getting wet. The kayak will get wet on top and
the water drains through small holes that go from the top of the kayak down to the bottom. Getting
wet from sitting on top of the kayak is only half the problem though - since it's easy to overturn on

one of these boats and end up in the water! Fortunately, this type of kayak is easy to get back on if
you happen to topple over.
Are they comfortable?
This is one of the most popular questions asked about sit on kayaks since they sound like they'd be
incredibly uncomfortable to be on. Surprisingly, they are very comfortable and are especially suited
for people that want the openness of a boat and feel a connection with the water. It also helps if you
have long legs that can stretch over the sides of the boat. They are also easier to get in and out of
and you never feel cramped when riding on this type of kayak.
They are quite stable
While they definitely aren't the most stable boat made, a sit on top kayak has been designed to
stay upright for the most part. They have been designed with wide hulls that help to increase the
kayak’s center of gravity. For fishermen, these boats remain surprisingly stable when a fish attaches
to the line and the fishermen suddenly has to jerk in different directions to reel it in.
You can't get trapped underneath the boat
This is a concern for a lot of people. When a boat overturns a person can get trapped underneath
and if they are panicking in the situation they may not know how to handle it safely. This is, in fact,
one of the main reasons why a lot of people choose a sit on top kayak. Some parents start their
children off on this type of kayak until they get the feel for boating and can progress to a kayak that
you can get in.
The cost factor
In most cases you'll end up paying less for a sit on top kayak than you would for a kayak that you
can sit in. If you're ready to get out boating but don't have the budget to pay for a higher-end model,
you can purchase a basic kayak that you can sit on at a very reasonable cost. You may also want to
consider this type of boat if you're only planning on doing some recreational boating or fishing and
won't be able to take out the boat too often.

Perfect for Whitewater kayaking
You don't have to worry about water flowing in and capsizing your boat when you're using a kayak
that you sit on. In fact, this type of kayaking is becoming more and more popular since this boat adds
a whole new dimension to the traditional sport of water rafting.
Basic safety tips
When you're out shopping for your new kayak there are a few safety features you should be
looking for. The first one is a safety line that goes around the deck that you'll be able to grab onto if
you should happen to fall into turbulent water. You should also be looking for a kayak that is at least
12 feet long. Should you decide on a kayak that is shorter it's going to be harder to steer it along in a
straight line.
There are also kayaks that come with rudders that are foot controlled that give you better control
over the kayak in rough waters. You should also check to see if the kayak you're interested in comes
with a front and back bulkhead that is completely watertight. Even if the kayak should tip over, it will
remain floating so that you can grab onto it and then climb back on.
Remember to look at all of your options when you're considering a sit on top kayak. There are a lot
of different types available and some come with more features than others. You'll also want to make
sure that you purchase a good paddle so that you can get the best experience possible with your
new kayak.
