“You cannot direct the winds, but you can adjust the sails” The mot-
to of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance seems all the more ap-
propriate as two weekends of the inaugural Alive Hospice O. L.
Shultz Regatta is history with over 200 skippers and crew from two
regions and seven states!
A not-so-chance encounter of the Hospice Regatta Championships
on a very windy day at St. Pete Pier brought the wind back to Ten-
nessee. The Board of Harbor Island Yacht Club caught the wind and
started charting a course alongside Alive Hospice. HIYC members
and Alive Hospice Board members, employees, and volunteers
jumped on board as crew. They calculated, adjusted, and worked
hard to trim the sails and stay the course toward raising money for
Middle Tennessee families in need of hospice care and grief services.
The result is $45,000 plus, making Harbor Island Yacht Club one of
only three clubs in the country to raise over $40,000 for a local hos-
pice their first year. That is almost double what Annapolis, MD did
in their first year.
We worked together, sailed together, and really defined the Corin-
thian spirit. Thank you to anyone who planned, set-up, worked, and
cleaned up, those who solicited and bought auction items, bought
tickets, signed up to race or crew, and the sponsors who made such
a large charitable contribution possible. Thanks to O. L. and his
family for the inspiration.

I can’t tell you how pleased I am with the results of the O L Shultz Alive Hospice Regattas.
The turnout of support for this project is something we haven’t seen in a long time. The sin-
gle focus on this effort to support such a worthwhile organization has brought out a kindred
spirit in us. You can take pride in what we, as a group, accomplished. While the final num-
bers aren’t in, as of this writing, it appears that we (HIYC & Hospice) have raised about
$45,000 for Alive Hospice.
We were well represented at the Splash Party and had great turnouts for the regatta din-
ners. In addition, participation in the regattas set recent records for boats on the water.
Every fleet had near maximum numbers with a total of 68 boats in both regattas. The vol-
unteers who stepped up to make this all happen were fabulous and we are thankful to you.
Other activities of the Club are moving along at a rapid pace. The north lot paving is com-
plete and the new C Dock is under construction. We plan for minimum interference with
club activities. Once the dock is completed, we can all get in our places and concentrate on
sailing.
I need to call your attention to a change regarding pets. At the April Board meeting the
Board voted unanimously to amend the Station Rules regarding pets to read as follows:
“Pets are permitted anywhere on HIYC property with the exception of the Clubhouse and the deck. All
pets must be kept on a leash and under the control of their owners at all times. They should not be a nui-
sance to other members (e.g. no barking etc.) and owners are required to clean up after them. Infractions
could result in banning the animal from the HIYC property permanently (subject to Board approval)”.
I also have a report that the pump out station is out of order and efforts are being made to
get the installer, from Florida, to stop by on a trip to this area and make repairs. We will
advise you as soon as those repairs are made.
In other matters, Team Music City USA reports that they have passed the halfway mark of
their goal to fund the New York Yacht Club Qualifying Series trip in September and wanted
to thank those who have made contributions. They need a few more bucks so all donations
are welcome.
I continue to be amazed at how you step up to meet every need the club has.
Good Sailing!

The last weeks of March were spent working on
equipment getting ready for a busy spring of sail-
ing. But it was the engines that took the most
work. The first weekend in April was the annual
Venturing Rendezvous at Boxwell Boy Scout Camp.
And we were hoping to take three boats for this
adventure. The Scouts under the direction of Gail
Beckman cleaned boats while Brian Laidlaw and
myself worked on hardware including engines. We
were cutting it close. Three days before the
planned departure we still only had one working
engine. Mike Osborn stepped up to help. First
putting a new water impeller in the engine for the
Pearson 26. But despite a valiant effort on the
parts of both Brian and Mike the Engine on Triad
refused to start. So Friday afternoon April 4th our
Pearson 26 and San Juan 23 headed upstream for
the fourteen mile journey to Boxwell. The wind
was strong from the west allowing for a fast ride
under sail most of the way. On board were sever-
al experienced Scouts and two of our newest
Scouts. Including one that was on his first sailboat
ride. I arrived at Boxwell via car that afternoon
just before our two boats made it to the dock.
And to say all on the boats were excited by the
trip would be an understatement.
Saturday the 5th was spent taking around 50
Scouts sailing. The wind was a bit lighter than we
had hoped for. But it was clear that we were
hooking these youth on sailing. And there were
two young ladies that managed to get on a boat
every time we went out. They knew they were
missing other activities being held that day. But
both stated that this was the best activity being
offered. I must agree.
Sea Scout News
The trip back on Sunday included our youth plus four addi-
tional youth from another unit. They just did not get
enough on Saturday. And all of the additional youth took
home forms to join our Sea Scouts. Yes I’d say it was a
successful trip worth all the effort of getting there.
Saturday April 12th was the first day of the O.L. Shultz
Alive Hospice regatta. The decision had been made to use
Triad our Pearson 30 for this race despite not having a
working engine. But first was the opening ceremony de-
signed by the Scouts and then the skipper’s meeting. The
ceremony was to present the hospice burgees to be flown
from the back stays of the boats in the regatta.
It was patterned after a ceremony called The Tolling of the
Boats. As the names on the burgees were read a bell was
tolled. And then the flag(s) were presented to the skipper
to fly the burgees. The Scouts were in their Dress Whites
and really looked sharp. It was a touching ceremony. Pic-
tures can be seen on the HIYC facebook page.
Triad raced in the JaM fleet and was skippered by Sea
Scout Sarah Taylor. It was an exciting race for all on
board. The Scouts nailed the start and held their own for
much of the race. But a few bad tacks toward the end
pushed them back to 6th out of 10 boats. All the same Sa-
rah’s mom quoted Sarah as saying “It was the best sail of
her life.” Yes it made for a fine day on the water.
Next we’ll be preparing for a regional Sea Scout regatta to
be held the first weekend of May at Boxwell. And then
Saturday May 17th will be our annual Safe Boating Class
held in association with the TWRA. And there is talk of
doing an overnighter real soon too.
With the longer days, Thursday evenings we’ll be sailing
again starting with our first meeting after Easter. And
we’re happy campers.

Irene’s Garden Ross Bryan was a founder of HIYC, a nationally-competitive racing skipper in the Lightning Class, and a profes-sional engineer who was one of the preeminent experts on novel uses of Portland Cement. He taught many of us sailboat racing. In high school, he had dated Irene, but college separated them and they each married someone else. Thirty years later, both their spouses had died, and Ross one day decided to phone his high-school sweetheart in Kansas. One thing led to another, and at near age sixty, he married Irene and brought her back to Harbor Island. Irene was “our kind of girl,” and before long, she was the close personal friend of most every woman in the Club and half of the men. She readily accepted and excelled at every club responsi-bility, but her principal role was that of Ross Bryan’s “Dream Girl” and loyal member of his cruising crew on their Swiftsure 33, “IROS,“ named for the two of them. Together they sailed down the Mississippi to the Caribbean, covered the Bahamas and finally made it to Georgetown in the Exuma Islands. Irene was the sort of woman who always has been a blessing to HIYC, and when she died, it was a great loss to the Club as well as to Ross. Elsie Shultz, as has been true on so many other occasions, knew exactly what to do and how to do it. Assisted by Barbara Ward, Joy Kimbrell, and later Anne Beesley and Dana Latour, she conceived of a volunteer-maintained project to beautify the Club Grounds, to be known as “Irene’s Garden.” It is maintained to this day by those who honor, not just Irene, but also the unselfish spirit of friendship Irene Bryan brought to Harbor Is-land. Irene Bryan is gone–but through the leadership of Elsie Shultz, her spirit continues to challenge us to dis-play her unselfish friendship and love of beauty...We hope you will volunteer to help maintain Irene’s Garden. Fred Beesley, Club Historian (among many other things…)

Results of the Cully Cobb Regatta, Sailed March 29
To the Editor,
I don’t know if we have a club award for this activity, but I would like to memorialize Greg Theri-ot’s outstanding Corinthian performance on second day of the O. L. Shultz regatta. I’m sure you
are aware of the story, but having seen it first-hand I was incredibly impressed by Greg’s spirit and performance that day. Needless to say, he made nothing of it but it’s clear that he is the kind of person we should be pleased is teaching and safeguarding the HIYC Sail Camp chil-
dren. The story as I witnessed it:
Sailing competitively on the second of three downwind legs in around 20 knots of wind, Greg’s
daughter-in-law, a neophyte sailor, spotted something in the water and said the words one never wants to hear under those conditions of wind and water temperatures: Is that someone in the water? Sure enough it was, and there were no boats near him. In a nanosecond with no hesi-
tation, Greg issued orders, with a crewman continuing to point at the MOB, and made course to the person some distance away. Quickly and expertly turning to weather, stopped the boat pre-
cisely, and worked the person to the stern and up the ladder. In just a few minutes the over-board person was on board and below warming up. We quickly returned to racing and Greg never even thought about requesting time allowance for the rescue. That he emerged victorious
that day seems so appropriate given his unconditional commitment to safety and Corinthian spir-it. I know I’m more comfortable sailing with someone of his capability and judgment having
seen this rescue in person.
