Mercy mission to NepalEMERGENCY medicine consultant Dr Richard Lyon was part of a British rescue team sent to Nepal following the devastating earthquake in April.

In an email sent to hospital colleagues while in Nepal, he said: “We have been using helicopters to access remote villages, some now completely cut off from the outside world by landslides.

“When we land, we can be overwhelmed by villagers as the first rescue teams they’ve seen.

“The breathtaking natural beauty of the Himalayas is awe inspiring from the air, but the overwhelming, destructive power of mother nature is seen on the ground.

“We were forced to land in the middle of a landslide today and trek to the village. The resilience, friendship and tenacity of the Nepalis is staggering – they smile in the face of disaster and offer us food they don’t have.

“In a village of 2000

people today, every single house was flattened.

“We completed detailed UN health assessments and carved a helipad into the hillside to allow vital follow-up relief air drops.

“With our limited kit, we treated the injuries we could. Paediatric care is in

high demand and have been asked to help out with several critical operative procedures in remote mountain medical tents.

“We had short, but wonderful, moments of laughter and smiles at my pathetic attempts to give instructions in Nepalese on how to take paracetamol. I don’t think I’ll be speaking Nepali anytime soon!”

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake is thought to have killed more than 7000 people.

Art workshops

Living lectures for medical studentsAN NHS Lothian core surgical trainee, Meg Anderson, recently joined forces with anatomy teaching fellow Nichola Robertson and artist Kimmie Simpson to set up Art and Anatomy Edinburgh.

The trio has delivered a series of workshops teaching medical students clinically relevant anatomy using bodypaint, clay and life drawing.

The team, who saw a statistically significant increase in the number of students considering a surgical career after just one class, presented the project at The Association of Surgeons of Great

Britain and Ireland’s annual meeting in March.

In June, the team ran a public engagement event joined by renowned American artist Danny Quirk.

More than 100 members of the public explored the relationship between art and anatomy.

Workshops on offer included making anatomical clay hearts with vascular surgeon David Lewis, body painting the neck with ear, nose and throat surgeon Nicola Starritt, and sketching hands with plastic surgeon Wee Lam and famous Edinburgh artist George Donald.

Art and Anatomy Edinburgh was awarded the Principal’s Teaching Award Scheme grant, and plans to run sessions for all second and third-year medical students over the next academic year.

The public engagement event was widely reported in the press and more similarly successful events will no doubt follow.

Innovative project encourages students to learn more about the ‘art’ of surgery Running for robots

FOUR teams of doctors and nurses completed the Edinburgh Marathon relay to raise funds for Prostate Scotland’s Blue Horizon Robot appeal.

Their relay teams –Rockets, Rockettes, Rockers and the Rollers - each comprised of four runners, most of whom are NHS Lothian staff from the Western General Hospital urology department.

Each competitor completed a quarter of the 42k course and between them raised nearly £10,000. The Rockets flew along the course, setting the sixth-fastest time of all of the marathon relay competitors in 3.01.43.

Consultant surgeon Alan McNeill from Edinburgh’s

Western General Hospital, who is a trustee of Prostate Scotland, said: “We ran in the marathon to support Prostate Scotland’s work to provide patients with information and support and to create awareness of prostate disease.

“We are also running to

support the charity’s Blue Horizon Robot Appeal to raise funds for robot-assisted surgery.”

Prostate Scotland aims to raise £2.86 million to fund a robot each for robotically assisted prostate cancer surgery in both east and west Scotland. The Scottish Government has recently pledged £2m funding towards the appeal.

Bird’s eye view of new hospitalYOU can now watch the first four months of construction of the new £150 million Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Department of Clinical Neurosciences. A video, shot from above the site, shows piling rigs, cranes and HGVs moving around the site as ground works take place. Gradually, the basement of the six-storey building and the cores that will form part of the concrete superstructure become more visible. Our new hospital will open to patients in late autumn 2017. Staff recognition

The anonymous giftTHE Transplant Team in Edinburgh was delighted to host the first altruistic live kidney donor information event at Dynamic Earth in April.

The national initiative gave information to the public about altruistic kidney donation, which has been allowed in the UK since 2006.

An altruistic donor can come forward and offer to donate a kidney to someone on the transplant list in the United Kingdom.

The event was attended by almost 90 people, with plenty of local

newspaper, radio and social media coverage.

The audience enjoyed hearing a first-hand account from Chris Jones, an altruistic donor, about his experience.

This was followed by a moving account from Julie Munro, the recipient of an altruistic live donor kidney within a paired exchange swap. Julie outlined her life on dialysis and the difference a transplant has made both to her life and her family.

A panel of experts in transplantation from across Scotland addressed

questions from the audience, with helpful insights from some of the previous donors!

The event also gave the opportunity to acknowledge those who have already donated, and Gabriel Oniscu, consultant transplant surgeon and clinical lead for the live kidney donor programme, presented a certificate of thanks in recognition of their gift.

School visit

The next generation of doctors!AFTER receiving a lovely letter from P7 pupil Kyle, an aspiring young doctor at Simpson Primary School in Bathgate, one of our emergency medicine doctors visited the school.

Dr Alistair Dewar, clinical teaching fellow and

specialty registrar in emergency medicine, was put through his paces telling the youngsters all about being a doctor and working in a hospital.

Alistair said: “The opportunity to share my experiences of medical school and work as a doctor with a group of eager, enthusiastic primary school pupils was too good to miss.

“They, and I, had a great time – playing with the cardiac monitor, dressing up in theatre gowns and asking me some tough questions!”

Stroke team successCONGRATULATIONS to the Lothian Stroke Imaging Team, who were recently shortlisted for the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Imaging Team of the Year Award.

It was a fantastic achievement, even more so as they were the only stroke imaging team and the only Scottish team to be shortlisted.

The team of radiologists, scientists, radiographers and healthcare staff from NHS Lothian and University of Edinburgh successfully researched the most efficient and cost-effective ways to scan patients to diagnose stroke quickly.

Using these results, they modified imaging procedures within NHS Lothian hospitals to ensure that all patients with suspected acute stroke are assessed very quickly on arrival. Through UK and worldwide guidelines, the work also improved imaging for stroke across the UK and beyond.

Professor Joanna Wardlaw, professor of applied neuroimaging and principal investigator of the Lothian Stroke Imaging Team, said: “Being shortlisted for this award is great news for the NHS Lothian and the University of Edinburgh collaboration.

“Most importantly, it acknowledges all the hard work done by the whole team, including local stroke physicians, emergency teams, nurses and imaging staff, over the last seven years.”

Research funding

Doctor awarded grant from Epilepsy Research UKDR Susan Duncan, of the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, was recently awarded a 36-month project grant to investigate whether there are particular traits that make people susceptible to death as a result of their epilepsy.

Coinciding with National Epilepsy Week, Epilepsy Research UK announced funding for nine new research projects vital to furthering our knowledge and understanding of epilepsy, ranging from improving diagnostics to identifying possible future treatments.

Susan, right, consultant neurologist and senior clinical lecturer in the department of clinical neurosciences and East of Scotland Epilepsy Service, NHS Lothian, said: “This study will give us a much better understanding of the risk factors for epilepsy-related death.

“We also hope that it will highlight changes in epilepsy in care that might help to avoid some of these deaths.”

EDINBURGH and Lothians Health Foundation recently sponsored the Health Champion Award at the Edinburgh Evening News Local Hero Awards held in June.

Winners included Professor Mike Dixon, consultant breast surgeon at the Western General Hospital, for the health champion category, while the SafeZone Edinburgh service won the 999 hero award.

SafeZone Edinburgh offers an alternative care pathway to vulnerable individuals who might otherwise find themselves heading to A&E in an ambulance, or spending a night in custody.

To help keep the SafeZone Edinburgh service on the road during the critical Christmas and Hogmanay period in 2014, following a successful pilot, Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation provided a £20,000 crisis grant in December. The service has now been successful in receiving longer-term funding from the public sector and statutory bodies.
