Cambridge Centre for Sixth-form Studies (CCSS) http://www.ccss.co.uk

CCSS achieves excellent results, getting students into top universities each year.

Whilst all schools claim that they treat their students as individuals, few come close to matching what CCSS achieves and this is the cornerstone of the CCSS experience.

Our class sizes are less than half the average for the independent sector in the UK: averaging 5-6 students in each class, we know our students well and treat all with respect, consideration and fairness. It is our aim to provide a truly personalised education so that all may be happy, fully supported and achieve their fullest potential.

We pride ourselves on offering a ‘pathway to university’ giving students support and guidance to ensure they are well prepared in all aspects of life and study. The success of our students means many enjoy success at Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE and other top universities.

Centrally located in Cambridge, our teaching and boarding facilities are excellent and there is a great support team for all students, including counsellors, native language tutors, a qualified nurse, expert House staff, IT support and the best broadband provision in the UK!

We pride ourselves on our sense of community and respond thoughtfully to individual differences, championing student input and a full involvement in the College.

The Friends School, Saffron Walden http://www.friends.org.uk/

Friends’ is a co-educational, Quaker day school for pupils aged between 3 and 18 with boarders from age 11. It occupies a beautiful site on the edge of Saffron Walden.

All Sixth forms are very different from your GCSE years. However, not all Sixth forms are the same and ours is more different than most. Partly this is because we celebrate difference in this school, but mostly it is on account of the special relationships which can be forged in an atmosphere where everyone can know everyone else.

Sixth form is not just motivation, application and examination so it matters more than ever that we offer more than just good teaching. I believe that it is much easier in a small community than in a large one for every individual to find his or her self, to be true to his or her self and to be true to others around them.

Not all people realise that the most important ability in life is to be able to make friends and enjoy a real and abiding friendship, and not merely to be able to ‘get along’ with acquaintances. This is a fundamental ‘life skill’, but one which is foolish to leave till later to learn.

We aim to achieve good academic success and, in the jargon to provide ‘value-added’ for our students by helping them to achieve better grades than they might have achieved elsewhere. Over the years, however, we have been even more proud of the fact that what we have done best by our students is to see them leave after their two years for degree courses, vocational courses or employment as confident, mature people who are aware of their strengths and their weaknesses and have come to accept both.

The Leys School, Cambridge http://www.theleys.net/

The Leys is one of England's premier independent schools. Established in 1875, the School offers a blend of

traditional values and a forward-looking approach to education, to prepare young people for the challenges

and excitements which lie ahead at University and beyond.

Set on the edge of the beautiful and stimulating city of Cambridge, The Leys is a close-knit, friendly

community in which pastoral care is seen as a top priority. The confidence which our pupils gain from this

encouraging family atmosphere enables them to fulfil their potential in work and play. The added-value in

academic progress is among the most impressive in the country, and the range of creative, cultural and

sporting opportunities is breathtaking.

The Sixth Form comprises the lower sixth and upper sixth, with approximately 100 pupils in each. Sixth Form

pupils generally study four subjects in their first year (AS level) and drop to three subjects in their second year

(A2 level). The majority of Sixth Form pupils are approaching their seventeenth year when they join in the

Autumn term - the main point of entry. A few places are reserved for pupils at schools outside of the UK,

whose qualifying exams take place in November and who join the school in the Lent Term (January) if their

academic record meets the school’s requirements.

Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge http://www.hrsfc.ac.uk/

At Hills Road we are committed to offering the best possible teaching and the strongest possible guidance

within a caring college community. High expectations and strong support, combined with dedicated staff of

the highest quality, ensure that students are able to develop self confidence, to fulfil their potential and

realise their aspirations. We are proud of our students’ many achievements including their outstanding

examination results. Our two most recent Ofsted inspection reports awarded a grade 1 (‘outstanding’) for all

areas inspected. We have also been awarded Learning and Skills Beacon status which recognises the high

quality of student support, of teaching and learning and of leadership and management, as well as our

commitment to sharing good practice. The College has a happy and purposeful atmosphere and there is a

real sense of partnership between staff and students.

The Perse School, Cambridge http://www.perse.co.uk/

The Sixth Form curriculum is based around A levels and the Pre-U qualification. This is a flexible structure and our students can study up to five subjects. Upper Sixth students now have the opportunity to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in a subject of their own choosing. The EPQ has proved to be a tremendous way of learning vital research skills and developing personal academic interests.

Class sizes are small and the teaching is excellent. As a consequence, standards are extremely high: in 2014 over three-quarters of Perse A level entries were graded at either A* or A. For these reasons, the vast majority of our students obtain places at their first choice university and this year thirty of them won places at either Oxford or Cambridge.

We believe our Sixth Form also benefits greatly from being part of The Upper: our students play an important leadership role as prefects, expedition leaders and sports captains.

We recognise that the transition to Sixth Form life and then university can be a challenging time. In consequence, our pastoral care system, based on close tutorial relationships, is geared to ensure each student’s academic and personal well-being. A dedicated university and careers advisory team within the Sixth Form also provides ongoing support to students throughout the university application process.

Chelmsford County High for Girls http://www.cchs.co.uk/

The Sixth Form at Chelmsford County High School is a very dynamic and busy place. In the two years the

students are with us, they not only make great progress academically in their chosen subjects, but also have

opportunities to participate in a range of activities outside the classroom that will develop both their thinking

and a broad range of life and leadership skills. They receive support in developing their career plans and will

be able to draw on our extensive experience in the UCAS application process and in applications to the top

universities. They enjoy studying in this focused environment, and we would expect them to make the most

of the opportunities available to them here, to set themselves challenging targets and achieve their full

potential.

St Mark's School, Harlow http://www.st-marks.essex.sch.uk/

St Mark’s is the only school in Harlow to offer students the opportunity to continue their studies beyond the age of 16 in a school-based, Catholic environment.

An extensive range of AS Level courses is provided to maximise student choice; 29 AS Level courses are offered. A2 courses are taken in Year 13 in all major subjects. Applied A Level courses are offered in Business (Double Award), ICT (Single Award) and Health and Social Care.

A well established programme of Vocational Education complements the A/Level courses. BTEC First Certificate is offered in Travel Tourism and Business.

Progression to university and other Higher Education colleges is encouraged with most A Level students achieving this with the help and support of the teaching staff and, in particular, the Head of Sixth Form. Pastoral guidance is given a high priority with students having ready access to personal tutors.

King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford http://www.kegs.org.uk

Our mixed Sixth Form is a well developed and diverse community offering exciting and demanding new

challenges that provide important steps in the process of preparing for University and future employment.

Each year we welcome approximately 170 students, into Year 12 to pursue a wide variety of Advanced Level

courses. Amongst this number there are usually around 65 new entrants to the school. It is a time for

developing independence, more responsibility, many freedoms and broadening personal development in a

challenging and supportive environment. As the accepted role models for the Lower School it is important

for students to engage in a range of extra-curricular activities to broaden their experience. Our students are

our ambassadors.

Many aspects of life in our Sixth Form are never recorded in any Performance Tables, but contribute so much

to the personal development of students and to their ability to progress successfully into higher education or

employment. All students participate in our core enrichment programme this includes Games and

Community Service. Many Sixth Formers play leading roles in the school’s Prefect and House systems. Many

students do much, much more! We expect every student to engage in meeting their own personal

challenges, seeking to achieve what is within their extended grasp.

This experience takes place in a nurturing and supportive environment where we guide students to help themselves. We are proud that our pastoral care is outstanding and we have a strong and effective partnership with

parents. In this ‘home from home’ every boy and girl is exposed to a wealth of opportunities. Their talents

are nourished and every individual’s personal growth is encouraged to flourish in an atmosphere of diversity

and excellence, intellectual curiosity and challenge.

The Sixth Form at Felsted is a bridge between school and university. Students are prepared academically to

work independently and to develop the skills that they will need for their tertiary education and beyond.

Classes typically have between six and 12 students, making for a less formal, more seminar style of teaching.

Relationships between teachers and students are strong and students rely greatly on the support of their

teachers. Felsted is able to offer its sixth form students a choice of study Advanced Level or the International

Baccalaureate Diploma.

For most subjects within these two courses there are two teachers, and homework is set on a weekly basis,

thus giving students further practice in organising their academic work. In the classroom, ICT, recent

published articles and a range of other materials are used to ensure teaching is contemporary. There are

many trips away from the school, both in term time and in the holidays, which extend students’ knowledge

and enthusiasm for their subjects. There are also a large number of academic societies to broaden students’

interests.

entry to Oxford or Cambridge universities.

Students also have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of activities beyond their academic studies and

For those moving up through the College and those joining Haileybury at 16+ from elsewhere, Sixth Form allows pupils to take greater control of their academic studies. Life in the Sixth Form equips pupils to work and think independently, and to balance academic demands with the other essential facets of Haileybury life.

The first few days of introductions, inductions and time in their Houses ensure everyone entering the Lower Sixth quickly makes friends and begins to understand the demands of their A Level or IB courses and what life in the Sixth Form has to offer. In addition, they attend presentations on the following aspects of school life:

Introductions to the various clubs and societies, co-curricular activities and entertainment opportunities More formal presentations on UCAS and expectations for the future, university applications and

preparations for these Time management skills to enable a smooth transition from GCSE to increased independent learning for

Sixth Form studies

Pupils are provided with every opportunity to take part in numerous regular and unique events, helping them develop confidence amongst their peers and in meeting and working with both staff and professionals from outside School. Activities such as the CCF, Young Enterprise, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and Community Service allow each pupil to pursue avenues of personal development perhaps not previously explored.

Academic achievement is imperative, but the values that go with it are more crucial. In an increasingly competitive and complex world, perhaps nothing is more important to today's parents than the future of their children. At Hockerill Anglo-European College we aim to provide our students with an exceptionally well-rounded education that not only equips them with sound internationally recognised academic qualifications but also ensures that they possess the confidence and communication skills to move seamlessly and successfully on in their chosen careers and communities.
