Language ArtsThe sixth grade language arts curriculum will combine reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammatical skills. The purpose of this class is to become fluent and effective readers, writers and speakers. We will work on reading comprehension by reading a variety of literature ranging from novels to short stories and through using an online learning program aligned to the Pennsylvania standards. We will strive to enhance our writing by placing focus on the word choice, grammar, conventions and mechanics of the English language in anticipation of improving our sentence style and structure. We will learn the parts of speech and effectively use them within our sentence writing and place proper emphasis on them within our oral speaking through class discussions and public speaking practices. With all of this in mind, I am confident that each and every child will find success in meeting the challenge that awaits them in the world of reading and writing.

Accelerated Reader

Requirements per nine weeks: 1st report period: 6 pts 2nd report period: 7 pts 3rd report period: 8 pts 4th report period: 9 ptsHow your student’s AR program is graded: Grade is determined by the % earned on all current nine week AR tests averaged

together. The percentage will be taken out of a fifty point value. EXAMPLE: If your student earned an 80%on a test and 90% on a test, the average

percentage earned would be 85%. 85% of 50 points would be a score of 43 points. This score would be entered under Language Arts as Accelerated Reader. Please note, as an incentive to continue to read, students will be rewarded with

prizes once they have reached 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 points. After 100 points, their names will be put in a drawing for a gift card.

Per nine weeks, if any student doubles the requirement, FIVE bonus points will be given.
