Why the Ascension of the Lord Matters By Bishop Robert Barron

The feast of the Ascension of the Lord, which the church celebrates at the end of the Easter season, is, I admit, hard to explain to a lot of contemporary people. Jesus passed, in bodily form, from this world to heaven? Wouldn’t his body still be in some identifiable place within the solar system or the galaxy? I’m sure that the traditional formulation of the doctrine strikes many today as hopelessly pre-scientific and mythological. And even if we were to admit the possibility of such a transition happening in regard to Jesus, how would this in any way affect us spiritually? The key to understanding both the meaning and significance of this feast is a recovery of the Jewish sense of heaven and earth. In regard to “heaven” and “earth,” most of us are, whether we know it or not, Greek in our thought patterns. By this I meant that we tend to set up—in the manner of the ancient Greek philosophers—a rather sharp dichotomy between the material and the spiritual, between the realm of appearance and the realm of true reality, between the fleeting earth and the permanent heaven. And if we’re spiritually minded, we tend to think of salvation as an escape from this world—this vale of tears—to a disembodied state called “heaven.” The problem is that these convictions have far more to do with Plato than with the Bible. Biblical cosmology is not fundamentally dualistic. It speaks indeed of “heaven” and “earth,” but it sees these two realms as interacting and interpenetrating fields of force. Heaven, the arena of God and the angels, touches upon and calls out to earth, the arena of humans, animals, plants, and planets. On the Biblical reading, salva-tion, therefore, is a matter of the meeting of heaven and earth, so that God might reign as thoroughly here be-low as he does on high. Jesus’ great prayer, which is constantly on the lips of Christians, is distinctively Jewish in inspiration: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Notice please that this is de-cidely not a prayer that we might escape from the earth, but rather that earth and heaven might come together. The Lord’s prayer recapitulates and raises to a new level precisely what the prophet Isaiah anticipated: “the knowledge of the Lord will fill the earth, as the water covers the sea.” The first Christians saw the resurrection of Jesus from the dead as the commencement of the process by which earth and heaven were being reconciled. They appreciated the risen Christ as the heavenly ruler of the nations, the one who would bring the justice of heaven to this world. And this is precisely why people like Peter, Paul, Thomas, Andrew, and John went to the ends of the earth to proclaim just this new state of affairs: “Jesus is Lord!” What began in the Lord’s resurrection is now ready to burst forth and flood the world through the work of the disciples. Accordingly, just before ascending to heaven, Jesus said, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” It is fascinating to note how the Ascension and Pentecost are linked: in the Ascension, something of earth moves into the heavenly sphere, and at Pentecost, something of heaven—the Holy Spirit—invades the earth. The two events constitute, in short, a foretaste of the great reconciliation for which the entire Jewish religion had for centuries yearned. The Church, guided by the Holy Spirit down through the ages, is meant to be the privileged place where this coming-together happens. In good preaching, in great Christian art, in the architecture of our churches and ca-thedrals, in the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, in the lives of the saints, and perhaps especially in the liturgy, earth and heaven meet. Think of the moment at Mass, just before the singing of the Sanctus, when the priest invokes the angels (the realm of heaven) and encourages us: “may our voices be one with theirs in their triumphant hymn of praise.” What he is suggesting is that earth might, with Christ, ascend to heaven and that heaven, in the person of the Holy Spirit, might descend to earth—and that the two dimensions might sing to-gether in harmony. What I hope has become clear in the course of this discussion is that the Ascension of Jesus has nothing to do with a literal journey into the stratosphere, for that would involve simply a transfer to another position within “the world.” The Ascension is Jesus’ journey, not to another place, but to another dimension. But this dimen-sion to which he has gone is not alien to us. It is instead a source of inspiration, power, and direction. And this is why the angels (denizens of heaven) who appear to the disciples just after Jesus’ departure say, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?” What they are hinting at, none too subtly, is this: un-der the influence of Jesus’ spirit, get to work! Do all that you can to foster the marriage of heaven and earth! Get on with the mission of the church!

While we pray for our families and our loved ones, let us pray earnestly for researchers and health care givers, and for those who must make difficult public decisions in this time of crisis. Let us not forget the poor, the needy, and the vulnerable, especially those who do not have access to adequate health care. When we confide our needs to the Lord in heartfelt and sincere prayer, we grow in our trust of the provident love of God. Br. Benedict Ayodi. OFMCap

The Month of May is dedicated to Our Blessed Mother Mary God wills that all his gifts should come to us through Mary" (St. Bernard)

It was in Rome, towards the end of the eighteenth century, one fine evening in May. A child of the poor gathered his companions around him and led them to a statue of Mary, before which a lamp was burning, as is the custom in that holy

city. There, these fresh young voices sang the Litany of our Lady. The next day, the little group, followed by other children, again gathered at the feet of the Mother of God. Next came their mothers, to join the little assembly. Soon, other groups were formed, and the devotion rapidly became popular. Holy souls, troubled by the disorderly conduct

which always increases and becomes graver at the return of the pleasant springtime, saw in these growing practices the hand of God, and they cooperated with the designs of Providence by approving and promoting this new devotion, as a

public and solemn act of reparation. The Month of Mary was founded. This is the month in which, normally in the churches, the most affectionate and fervent homage of prayers and devotions from the hearts of Christians are raised to Mary. We can still honor her in our homes during this quarantine by creating a sacred place, placing an image of Mary,

candles, flowers etc. and a more attentive recitation of the Holy Rosary with our families. Some suggested prayers:

May 16—MARY: AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS "We find her on Calvary, at the foot of the cross, praying. This is nothing new for Mary. She has always acted like this, in fulfilling her duties and looking after her home. As she went about the things of this earth, she kept her attention on God." (22) Let us offer to our Mother today: An act of contrition, said many times, asking her to offer our sorrow for our sins to Jesus crucified.

May 17—MARY: THE SORROWING MOTHER "Our Lady is there listening to the words of her Son, united to him in his suffering, when he cried out ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' What could she do? She united herself fully with the redemptive love of her Son and offered to the Father her immense sorrow, which pierced her pure heart like a sharpedged sword." (23) Let us offer to our Mother today: The mortification of keeping quiet about any pain or discomfort, any inconvenience or disappointment, uniting it with her pain as she stood by her crucified Son.

May 18 —MARY: THE CO-REDEMPTRIX "It is with good reason that the popes have called Mary co-redemptrix. ‘So fully, in union with her suffering and dying Son, did she suffer and nearly die; so fully, for the sake of the salvation of all souls, did she abdicate the rights of a mother over her Son, and immolate him, insofar as it was in her power, to satisfy the justice of God, that it can rightly be said that she redeemed mankind together with Christ.' This gives us a deeper understanding of that moment in the Passion of our Lord on which we shall never tire of meditating: Stabat autem iuxta crucem Iesu mater eius, ‘There, standing by the cross of Jesus, was his mother.'" (24) Let us offer to our Mother today: Five small hidden sacrifices in honor of the five major wounds of our Lord.

May 19—MARY: HER FAITH "If our faith is weak, we should turn to Mary. St. John tells us that it was because of the miracle that Christ performed, at his mother 's request, at the marriage feast at Cana, that ‘his disciples learned to believe in him.' Our Mother is always interceding with her Son, so that he may attend to our needs and show himself to us in such a way that we can cry out, ‘You are the Son of God!' " (25)

.

May 20—MARY: OUR HOPE "Our Lady, a full participant in the work of our salvation, follows in the footsteps of her son: the poverty of Bethlehem, the everyday work of a hidden life in Nazareth, the manifestation of his divinity in Cana of Galilee, the tortures of his passion, the divine sacrifice on the cross, the eternal blessedness of paradise. "All of this affects us directly, because this supernatural itinerary is the way we are to follow. Mary shows us that we can walk this path with confidence. She has preceded us on the way of imitating Christ; her glorification is the firm hope of our own salvation. For these reasons we call her ‘our hope, cause of our joy.' " (26) Let us offer to our Mother today: A smile when we do not feel like smiling.

May 21— MARY'S PRAYER "Let us ask the Blessed Virgin to make us contemplatives, to teach us to recognize the constant calls from God at the door of our heart. Let us ask her now: Our Mother, you brought to earth Jesus, who reveals the love of our Father God. Help us to recognize him in the midst of the cares of each day. Stir up our mind and will so that we may listen to the voice of God, to the calls of grace." (27) Let us offer to our Mother today: A visit to Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.

May 22—MARY: EVER VIRGIN "The purity, humility, and generosity of Mary are in sharp contrast to our wretchedness and selfishness. To the extent that we realize this, we should feel moved to imitate her. We too are creatures of God, and if we strive to imitate her fidelity, God will surely do great things in us. Our small worth is no obstacle, because God chooses what is of little value so that the power of his love may be more manifest." (28) Let us offer to our Mother today: The prayer "Blessed be your purity" Catholic News Agency

APPARITIONS

Many people have a skewed understanding of apparitions and their implications. Some believe that only the very holy experience these miracles, which is not the case. Others

think that only people who are emotionally imbalanced experience these “miracles”, while others (including Catholics) display unreserved skepticism. This is not difficult to understand since, at

least once a year, we hear on the local news about somebody seeing Jesus on a can of ‘Spaghettios” or the Blessed Mother on their buttered English muffin. After all – didn’t Jesus

warn that there would be those who would claim to see him in a field or other place (Matt. 24:25-26)? He was speaking of his 2nd Coming and not about private revelations. If his warning included

apparitions, St. Paul would not have claimed to see him on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3-5) long after his Ascension to heaven. On the other hand, we also have those who would believe in any apparition they see on the evening news. It seems that some need to see some proof in order to have faith. Theirs is a need to experience an almost magical quality just so that they can say that they witnessed it. Both camps have valid reasons for their belief and/or skepticism, as does

the Church who investigates these matters heavily before rendering a decision or opinion. In Church-approved apparitions such as Our Lady of Lourdes and Fatima or the appearance of our Lord to Sister Faustina and the Divine Mercy, these matters were looked upon favorably by the

Church but only after exhaustive research, prayer and intense scrutiny. Catholics are not obliged to believe in or have a devotion to these types of private revelations. However, they are

efficacious for us in that they display the power of God and illustrate his infinite love for us, including the Marian apparitions which happen solely by the power of God. For Catholics to cling

onto every reported “apparition” seen on television may be imprudent, we should look to the Church to guide us in these matters because of the Authority given her by Christ himself

(Matt. 16:18- 19, 18:15-18, Luke 10:16, John 16:12-15, 20:21-23). On the other hand we cannot simply reject every apparition as bogus, either. We must remember that our Lord appears to us in

the form of bread and wine during every Mass in the Holy Eucharist.

Did You Know?

Protect young people from cyberbullying Cyberbullying can happen at any time, on any online platform.

It can take many forms – cruel direct messages, threatening emails, mean texts, shared photos, and more. Victims of cyber-

bullying often suffer from anxiety and depression, and their self-esteem can be diminished. They may be reluctant to talk

about bullying, so parents need to be on top of all their children’s online activities. Asking questions and getting

information about popular apps and sites will help, too. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Cyber-

What's the Catholic Church's position on tithing? Answer: Although the Church teaches that offer ing some form of material support to the Church is obligatory for all Catholic adults who are able to do so, it doesn’t specify what percent of one’s income should be given. Remember, tithing was an Old Testament obligation that was incumbent on the Jews under the Law of Moses. Christians are dispensed from the obligation of tithing ten percent of their incomes, but not from the obligation to help the Church.

ENCUENTRO MATRIMONIAL MUNDIAL

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
