DESCRIPTION
In this issue we bring you what can only be described as boundary pushing bodyboarding. Pierre Marqua gives us a first hand account of a ground breaking trip to Namibia that saw our countries top international competitors take on the longest barrelling wave on the planet (I am sure there may be one or two people who dispute that fact but the proof lies in the dazed expression of those barrel hardened travellers.). And to top it off, we give a final round up of the countries premiere event, the Tand Invitaional 2012. Enjoy.

Plagued with swell charts more
unstable than a see-saw, it was a
hard call to make, but with a little
glimmer of hope on the charts, the
Tand Invitational 2012 was set to
run.
Everyone knew it would be big, but
man was it big; a grumbly, untouched,
icy snow mountain big. None the less
the contestants were there, there
were monstrous waves, and it was a
go.
I think that more than anything
this was the year of the groms. Not
necessarily doing well in the event,
but getting out there before the
heats were on to test it out, going
in during every break we had and
pushing the limits in the free surf
and expression session. They rode
without any thought for the following
day, riding any wave they could
catch.

The conditions on both days were
testing to say the very least. The
contestants surfed their hearts out
for a 1 in 16 chance of walking away
with 20K. People do silly things
for that ... calculated, technical,
boundary pushing silly things. It's
the good kind of silly that you look
back on in a few years and remember
for the thrill that Tand is.
When the final horn sounded it was a
tight call. But the now two times
Tand Champion tightened his grip on
the title. Jared Houston loves that
wave with everything in him, and you
can see it in the way he rides there.
Huge congratulations to every
rider that even dared paddle out
on either day and to everyone that
came and spectated from parents to
girlfriends and even Henk's dog. You
were all a part of history. Massive
thanks go out to Turbo Bodyboards,
the International Bodyboarding
Association and Red Bull for their
support in making this event as
successful as it was!

the BUrning Shore.
Namibia: the final frontier. These are the voyages of Marcel Habets and Pierre Marqua. It was a three week mission: to explore a strange new world, to seek out new waves and new fishing holes, to boldly go where no man has gone before, well so we like to think at any rate.

Namibia was always on my bucket list of places to go, but the logistics of it were very intimidating, expensive airfare or huge petrol bills, where to stay, where to get a 4x4 and how the hell do I drive one of those in massive sand dunes and salt pans. So when Marcel Habets asked me to join him an a mission to the heart of the Skeleton Coast, I jumped at the idea, what could be better than a good friend as guide, fellow photographer and someone to share the uncrowded line ups with.
If you don’t know this already, Namibia is home to one of the best waves on earth, a dredging left hand point break that rolls down a 2.5km stretch of beach in the middle of no-where. To get there you need a 4x4, there is no getting around that one, your Ford Bantam or your Toy-by-four SUV is not going to cut it. You also need to know someone who knows how to get there, as there is no road, no GPS and no map. The wave is known in South Africa as Skeleton Bay, and there has been a huge debate within the surfing fraternity if it was makeable on any other wave riding tool, other than a short board. A bodyboard was seen as too slow, if you can’t make Supers, just how are you are going to make this? So the challenge had been set, the line was drawn in the sand and I was frothing to find out for myself. //
SIXTY40.cO.ZA 63
After a few failed missions out to Skeleton Bay, a swell finally appeared on the radar from our base deep in the desert, it looked like the 30th of June was going to be all time. Then the rumours started, lots of pros were flying in, it was going to be crowded, and best of all, a small crew of South African pro bodyboarders were driving through the night to catch it. As a surfer I was bleak I wasn’t going to have this to myself, but as a photographer, I couldn’t have asked for better. The reality of this wave is that for every wave ridden, 10 would go empty. So there was no need to be bleak and I loved having that many cool faces to share the experience with. We left our base at 5am, and two hours later we were finding our way down the point through the legendary Namibian mist. Slowly one car appeared, then another and another. The rumours were true; half the ASP was there, wondering around in the freezing mist like lost farts in a perfume factory not really knowing what to do. //

We spotted a South African flag beany huddled over a small fire, the owner turned out to be Mark McCarthy, who along with Jared Houston, Sacha Specker, Cobus Bosman and Neels Smit had spent 23 hours on the road and then spent a horrid night camping out on the frozen beach with no toilet in sight. Cold, damp and teary eyed, they were doing their best to make breakfast over a wet wood fire. No one was really amped to paddle out, because no one could actually see what the wave was doing, the mist just seemed to get thicker as the sun rose in the east.
I couldn’t contain myself any longer and had to get out there, mist or no mist, I could hear waves and that’s all that counted. The paddle out was intimidating, the current was more powerful than the rip at Uluwatu at high tide, but once out, the reality set in. It was solid, with glassy lines rushing at you out of the mist and throwing down black barrels hard onto the sand bar.
To describe the wave is virtually impossible, every wave is better than the previous wave and that was the best wave of your life. In my opinion its better than anything I have surfed in Indo or here in South Africa. Once you have one under the belt, you just want more. 15 to 40 second tube rides are all part of the package. So are heavy beat downs and long hold downs, but the rewards far outstrip the consequences of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You need to understand that spending that much time in the green room changes your outlook on love, life and everything else. Like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, Skeleton Bay just puts life back into perspective in the most positive of ways. //

When the mist finally lifted and the sun came out, the reality of Skeleton Bay emerged and it was time for the likes of Spex, Jerry and Boetie to show the world that this wave is not only makeable on a bodyboard, but that bodyboarders can and will take it up a level or three.
Spex dominated on the knee, riding like he didn’t have a worry in the world, Boetie clocked up more tube time in an hour than most of us have in a lifetime and Jerry, well he just went next level with long tubes, old school barrel rolls and massive backflips over very shallow sandbars. In doing so he proved that it is possible to hit the lip on this out of control freight train of a wave, but be warned, the lip isn’t forgiving and neither is the sand bar below. Do it at your own peril.
It should be noted that Spex was a massive standout that day, with seasoned pros like Sean Holmes, Danny Fuller and Tanner Gudaskus rating his one DK wave as one of the best waves they had seen surfed there... ever! That says a lot. From low tide to high tide, it never stopped, like an endless wave machine churning out set after set; Skeleton Bay humbled all who rode her that day. From ballies like Marcel and myself who surfed for as long as our bodies would allow us too, to the new generation who, even when they emerged dazed, dehydrated and very confused after 10 hours in the surf, refused to give up and stumbled their way back up the point for just one more. The look in everyone’s eyes was that of sheer ecstasy, of contentment, stoke and happiness. In that moment, everything was good with the world. As the sun started to set, and broken boards and bodies littered the small informal car park, half way up the point, cars were packed; contact details swapped, new friendships forged and a total sense of zen descended on all who partook in King Neptune’s display of magic and wonder. Like a drug, the craving has spoken and I am going back.
PS it was flat the next day, in case you were wondering.

WoRdS: this image tells us a very partial story. Looking at it, the viewer is struck with a sense of incredible tranquillity and remoteness. in truth, just outside of this frame lies a veritable who’s who of South African surfing - huffing, puffing and hassling their way through the best of the sets. That is why I love looking at this wave – it represents my concerted effort to return the favour - to embrace the benefits of the boogie for taking off deep and snaking those surfing snobs into this special little slab. Hey Spex, first of all,
congrats from the sixty40
team and I think that
we speak on behalf of
the entire country when
we say we are extremely
proud of you.
Agh thanks pal.
Let’s start with the
lamest question of all,
how does it feel?
It's pretty surreal at
the moment. It still
has not really set in.
I think when I get home
and spend some time with
family and friends it
will hit home a little
more.
We all know it has been
a long journey, what did
you do differently this
year that brought it all
together?
The only thing that was
different this year, was
that I followed the DK
tour. In previous years I
only did Pipe and maybe
one other event.
What are your plans from
here?
No big plans as of yet.
To secure my slot on
the 2013 GQS and keep
focusing on my riding.
I prefer not to plan too
far in a advance.
Has expanding your
focus into photography
helped or hindered your
competitive edge in your
opinion?
Competitively I think my
photography has helped
me. I feel more balanced
and driven when I do get
the chance to ride and
I am always analysing
and closely watching the
best in the world, so
it is easy to pick up
on improvements I could
make to my own riding.
Last but not least, how
were the celebrations?
Rockstar, or a few beers
with the boys?
Very chilled... a few
Rum and Cokes with the
crew in Venezuela.
Congrats again Sacha
and looking forward to
celebrating when you are
home.
Thanks Ian. Amping to get
home and tan some chops
on the braai.
Stay tuned to our December issue for a full interview with the Multi Talented Mr. Specker.
