2009 Fisher Mens Soccer Preiew
With nearly 25 letterwinners bac rom last year, the St. John
Fisher College mens soccer team will enter the 2009 season
as one o the ront-runners to win the Empire 8 Conerence
Championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA
Diision III Championship.
Thats the goal going into this season, says head coach Rob Searl, whowill enter his 14th season with the Cardinals. Our program is at the level
now where we expect to make it to the conerence championship and win
the league title.
With several key returning players back rom last years team that advanced
to the postseason or the ourth time in the last ve years, its easy to see
why expectations are so high. The Cardinals will eature a heavy dose o
veterans, but will also have some new players that should make an
immediate impact.
The Cardinals will open the 2009 season, just like they have each o the last
ew seasons, playing a rigorous non-conerence schedule, battling the top
teams in the region.
Ive always taken the attitude that we want to play the best competition out
there and get ourselves ready or league play once it starts, says Searl, who
has coached at the collegiate level or nearly 30 years. To win the Empire
8 title, we rst have to nish in the top our at the end o
the regular season and we want to be battle-tested when
that time comes.
Academic All-American Lue Lennox is Fishers top
returner. Lennox, who was named to ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America First Team, has led Fisher in scoring
each o the last two years, racking up 24 goals during thattime.
Everyone knows that Luke is our go-to player, Searl says.
I were going to be as successul as we think we can be,
Luke is going to have to have a great senior year and I think
he will.
While Lennox will lead the Cardinals up top, senior goalie
Adam Durst will be Fishers nal line o deense. Over his
rst three years at Fisher, Durst has started between the
pipes in 38 o a possible 55 games and has come up with
huge saves during his playing career.
Were going to need Adam to be a wall, Searl says. I he
can stay healthy, I think hell have a great senior year.
Fishers biggest strength going into this season will
denitely be its junior class. With 13 juniors on this years
team, the Cardinals will need several o its upperclassmen
to take their game to the next level.
Junior Andrew McIntosh gures to start at sweeper, while classmate
Michael Rooney and senior Eric Friedman also gure to start on
deense. Fellow juniors Bryan Canty, Cristobal Martine, Alex Salter,
and Andrew Sapiena will also see plenty o action at mideld.
At attack, junior Matt Guinto gures to be a main contributor ater an
injury-riddled sophomore year, while sophomores Connor Julien and
Tim Bach should see ample playing time either at attack or mideld. We have quite a ew juniors and seniors back rom last all and theyre
going to have to step up and take on some larger roles this season,
Searl says.
While the Cardinals have several returners back, Searl expects many o th
newcomers to step right in and contribute.
Section III standout Austin Bucley will challenge or a starting job on
deense, while Sean Fishel out o Niskayuna will push or
playing time at mideld. Fellow rst-year players Garhett varin and
Liasor Dima, both rom Section V, are natural goal scorers who will get a
chance to contribute right away.
I think this years reshmen class is a pretty good one, Searl says.
Theyre going to get a chance to show what they can do right away.

With so many players back rom last year and an infux

away, its easy to see why Fisher ans are so excited
about the 2009 season.
I started looking orward to this season about ve
minutes ater last years nal game, because I knew
what we had coming back and what I thought we hadcoming in, Searl says. I truly believe that this is the
year that Fisher takes the next step and advances to
