The School Libraries Work! initiative is sponsored by the American Library Association with thefocus of improving the research done on the impact school libraries have on schoolcommunities. Among the findings from a study down in Iowa, school with aschool libraryprogram that is adequately staffed, resourced, and funded can lead to higher student

achievement regardless of the socioeconomic or educational levels of the community. Theseimpacts can be seen at the high school level, where schools that had adequately fundedlibraries did better on the ACT.School Libraries Work! http://www.ala.org/research/librariesmatter/node/381

    Print Circulation Statistics

Our print circulationstatistics showedapproximately 5,500books checked out in aone month period.

These statistics were compiled fromOctober 1, 2013, until October 31, 2013.These circulation statistics also representthe checkout activity of all 4 middleschools and all 3 high schools combined, for a total of 5,500 students. On average, each secondary student in the St. JosephSchool District had the opportunity tocheck out at least one book. This is a hugesuccess for our students who are selecting

readings in the English Language Artsclasses as well as for their own leisurereading.

As well, our nonfiction statistics werestrong. Students and staff checked out

over 1,200 nonfiction texts during thistime. This shows that our librariesnonfiction collections are supporting the

Common Core state standards as well asdistrict initiatives to increase the amount ofinformational texts read by students.

Finally, our librarians have beguntracking how our newer books areperforming compared to the rest of theexisting print collection. By our definition,we are tracking new books that werepurchased beginning in the 2012-13school year. These books are a little over ayear old or newer in many cases.

The proportion of the print collection

that is checking out that is new is veryhigh. Out of the 4,390 fiction bookschecked out, approximately 1/4 were newbooks. Out of the 1,203 nonfiction bookschecked out, approximately 1/6 were newbooks.
