Skateworks "The Little Wooden Bridge from the street to the classroom" Jon Burns, founder skateworks-project.orgWhat is Skateworks?Skateworks is a children's development project group devoted for the development of co-educational learning facilities for Street Children in Ethiopia built around the hook of

skateboarding. Skateworks central project is the construction of a camp for Ethiopian Street children that bridges the gap between the street and organised education. Skateworks project

consists of a trade school built around a skateboard park that provides vocational training with a certification in metal fabrication combined with Skateboarding classes. Skateworks is 80%

education & 20% Skateboarding. It is the combination of these skills that will help street children to gain employment, feel positive about them selves and give them the communication &

goal setting skills to move forward into formal education and to earn a living as a functional part of Ethiopian society. During the 12 week certification course, independent non for profit

health providers will visit the camp, give a thorough physical health and dental check and immunise those that have not had their injections. Complete records will be kept at the camp with

complete transparency for education, health and Police checks as needed and or required. This data base will be online for these government bodies to access and complete transparency

will be paramount and all government bodies will have an open door access to the camp at all times. All operatives and visitors will be required to have a current validity full USA, Australia,

Ethiopian & UK Police check document.

Why Skateboarding?Skateworks outreach projects in Ethiopia has used the connectivity and the hook of skateboarding to not only bring street children back to education but to also crush religious and cultural

divides in a marginalised land interwoven by some eighty languages and two hundred dialects of those languages. Previously ravished by war & still to some degree famine Ethiopia is a

rapidly growing nation. However Street Children still slip through the cracks with no means or bridge to take them from the streets to and steady job & the security & growth that

employment embodies. Skateworks provides that bridge. The inherent benchmark setting and goal attainment aspect of skateboarding is invaluable as a learning tool. Especially when

combined with skateboardings connectivity and inclusiveness. Skateworks projects in The Harrar region which suffers rampant division between Islam and Christian, Oromo and Amara

peoples has time and time again revealed stories of potential leaders, teachers, guides and mentors in their communities when connected through skateboarding. Barriers are broken

down and it is replaced with the level playing field that only sport and especially skateboarding can provide. Through setting a goal and repeated effort while tweaking technique the

process can be likened to life efforts emotionally, creatively, educationally & certainly within not only the attainment of employment but more importantly keeping it. Skateboarding is the

little wooden bridge from the street to the classroom, Jon Burns, founder of Skateworks 2015 speech for Australian International Education Conference (aiec)

Why Metal fabrication as a trade?

Timber is not as plentiful in Ethiopia as metal and the cost is somewhat prohibitive so metal fabrication is used for everything from fences, to doors, windows most housing fabrication,

carts and cars. If one was to pick the most employable trade in Ethiopia it would be metal fabrication, far exceeding plumbing, electrician, builder of which mainly are governed by new

building projects whereas metal fabrication is governed by repairs and is much more widely sought after in and economy like Ethiopia.

What has Skateworks achieved so far?!

Skateworks was Project in focus, Opening plenary keynote speaker & advisory member in the “Focus on Africa” advisory panel to the Australian Federal government on of shore

education initiatives at the Australian International education conference in Canberra. ❢ Number one education initiative utilising sport in Eastern Africa.❢ Skateworks is the largest

skateboarding education initiative for young girls in Eastern Africa.❢ Largest return to home initiative for East African Street children.

products, the “blocks” interlock to form the outside structure of a

interconnected structure. ICF can be used in virtually any type or size of

building, residential or commercial. The advantages of ICF include increased

insulation properties, soundproofing, disaster, pest, and moisture resistance.

Old Tyres as landscapingThe advantages of using tyres include cost & sustainability

(diverting an item from landfill with minimal if any

processing).Public facilities involved in landscaping & erosion

control should explore some of the applications of reusing tyres

where possible and feasible. Positive public examples of tyres

in the landscape go a long way in educating the public & giving

real-life examples of what can be achieved.

Upcycled shipping containers for modular buildings & growth

    • Environmentally friendly/weather resistant: “Structurally strong and weatherproof,

shipping/freight containers are an ideal base from which to construct a habitable

space, without placing the same burden on the environment as conventional

construction methods,” the Cube Modular Homes website points out.

    • Time: “Construction time on-site can be as little as seven days to fully

weatherproofed condition,” says New Zealand–based Addis Containers.

    • Footprint: Having a smaller footprint means container homes are lower-maintenance,

require less energy, are more flexible in where they can be built and minimise wastecompared to traditional homes and construction methods.
