Skeletal System Notes
What are the 4 functions of bones?1. Bones help you move around
2. Bones provide structure and shape
3. Bones protect your body
4. Bones help to keep your organs in place
What are bones made of?Bones are made of calcium (milk, dairy products, minerals and vegetables)
What do bones produce?Bones make blood cells
What are joints?Joints are places where two or more bones join together.
What is cartilage?Cartilage is a type of soft tissue that allows structures to be folded or bent without damage (ear and nose)
What are ligaments?Ligaments are tissues that hold bones in place (knee and ankle)
What are tendons?Tendons are tissues that connect muscle to muscle or muscle to bone (achille's tendon attaches the calf muscle to the heel bone)
What are five ways in which you can take good care of your skeletal system?1. Participate in regular physical activity: exercises that build strength will make your bones and muscles stronger
2. Follow a nutritious eating plan: foods that are rich in calcium and vitamin D promote bone growth and strength
3. Practice good posture: sit and stand in a correct but relaxed manner so that bones, joints and muscles maintain proper alignment
4. Lift object carefully: when lifting something heavy, keep your back straight and knees bent
5. Treat injuries quickly: if you are injured, see a physician. Avoid putting stress on an injured body part.
