Skerries schools crisis
CHEEKY CHERUBS: Spirited young spectators enjoy the Skerries St Patrick’s Day parade and celebrations 20 COLOUR PHOTOS INSIDE
N September 2008 some 80 school Skerries children may face the Iprospect of having no place at a
Skerries school. Skerries Community Association
(SCA) says it has been working to resolve this issue: a survey has been undertaken to determine the number of children under the age of five in the area; a site near Kellys Bay has been found; the intention to build on the site has been publicly confirmed by the Department of Education - and a patron, the area's Vocational Education Committee (VEC) to run the school has been found.
However, there has been no commitment by the Department of Education to actually forge ahead and put further plans into motion. Instead Minister Hanafin has just issued an order preventing any VEC from becoming patron of a primary school until further notice, thereby further delaying the already fraught process of delivering a new school.

Skerries Rail Station staff scoop top award - again!SKERRIES railway station has won best stop in the entire country - yet again. The crystal perpetual trophy was handed back to Senior Depot Man Nicky Byrne (pictured left, centre) and joins a slew of trophies and certificates.
So, what’s their secret? “Keeping it well, I suppose,” says Nicky, who adds: “It’s a team effort, we all do our part.” Over the years, however, this ‘effort’ has paid off, with successive awards helping towards station refurbishment, including preservation of the exterior of the old signal box where Nicky spent 12 years. Ever since, the station has won Best Station every year - for 11 years, despite Nicky insisting “It’s only a job - just one we do well.”
One for whom it’s definitely more than ‘just a job’ is fellow Senior Depot Man, Vincent Sharpe, who loves trains and has travelled as far away as Vancouver and Ukraine to indulge his passion. Pictures from his travels can be seen in the waiting room.
Young Stephen Costigan is third member of the team behind the winning station crew. When next you pass by their ticket window, don’t forget to say a heartfelt, ‘Thanks, men - well done!’

Playschool vandalised: toddlers devastated
ON March 20 the Skerries Community Pre School teachers arrived to the Scouts den to find the back door had been smashed in.Unfortunately it was too hazardous to hold the playschool there. No matter how they tried to cover the damaged area it would have been too difficult to stop curious pre-schoolers from investigating and possibly injuring themselves. The scouts were allowed to use the premises as the children are older but the playschool was closed for a week. When play leader Debbie Stevens broke the news to the parents and children that arrived that morning she said most of them were devastated and little Louis Naracu burst into tears.
Food fair for Rás event
SKERRIES restaurant owners are banding together to organise a food fair for when the Rás event comes to Skerries. Representatives from the Skerries Chamber of Commerce, Olive, Seasons, the Pier House, Parachute Cafe, Larrol Tea and Holmpatrick School had a number of meetings last month. The group felt that there was huge scope to work together to make Skerries a food destination. If any other food retailers are interested please contact Greg Reddin at Reddins Stationary.
Skerries on film
DAVORKA Naletilic, living in Skerries, shot a short film titled Electric Fence. It is a story about a chance meeting between a boy and a man on the Armagh border and is told by the boy as an adult looking back on it. It was shot mainly in rural countryside around Swords but there are also some Skerries scenes.Electric Fence was first shown at the Clownes Film Festival in October, then in the Belfast Film Festival on 31st March and will be shown by the Rockabill film Society in Skerries some time this month.

Lusk author becomes millionaire
DEREK Landy's new book Skulduggery Pleasant has just been launched amid massive hype. Landy received a seven figure advance for the book whichis being hailed as Ireland’s answer to Harry Potter.
The main character Skulduggery is a wise cracking skeleton magician so it is not hard to see why he has captured the kids imaginations.
Landy grew up on a farm in Lusk and first realised his love for making up stories in Corduff National School.
“'Everyone else would be struggling to write half a page and I could be up to 10 or 11 pages before I could stop myself,” he recalls
There is certainly no stopping him now. He has been contracted to write three Skulduggery books in the series and the second one is already well underway.

KERRIES residents will be very pleased to see that the new car park for the Community S
Centre is well under way. The size of the car park has been a problem for a long time and it has got a lot worse since the paid parking system came to Skerries.
The car park was just closed for a week during half term to get the bulk of the work done so it didn't inconvenience centre users too much. When finished the new section will have spaces for 50 cars. The layout of the old section will also be changed to accommodate this and there will be extra spaces there too.

kerries is truly the place to be for Saint Patrick's day. SThe whole town comes
out either to march or to cheer and the warmth and community spirit can be felt by one and all. It is yet another event in Skerries life that really makes us feel proud to live here.
The 2007 parade was no exception. There were 40 different entrants and everyone knew everyone else. There were baton twirlers, dancers, waterpistols, motorbikes, vintage cars, dramatic floats, martial arts, sea scouts, pirates and lollipops. Something for everyone!
The entrants lined up along the South Strand and then marched to the Monument and up Strand Street where they were judged by all the dignitaries on the Skerries Chamber of Commerce stand. Then the parade culminated at the Mill where there was plenty of room to disassemble and the marchers could then relax and have a coffee or run off for a play.

HE Green Schools committee in Holmpatrick School hosted a TComposting Day recently to
spread the word about the joys of composting.
It was well attended by parents and children and delegations from other schools. They launched their new brochure 'Skerries Composting Network' which was funded by Fingal County Council and designed by local parent Michelle De Beer. The leaflet gives the 10 easy steps to successful composting.
Trish Kennedy from Fingal County Council (Green Schools Co-ordinator) gave a talk with slides and answered questions.
After the talk it was the turn of the Holmpatrick kids manning stalls around the room. They each explained a different aspect of composting. There were compost doctors, samples of food decomposing, a compost quiz, leaflets and instructions and even seeds being correctly planted. Then compost bins were given out as raffle prizes and biscuits and orange were given out to those in attendance.

I've learned to never underestimate that niggling voice or the destructive prowess of a small child. Sometimes I just weight the odds and take my chances.
I also have a hundred emails to answer. I have that bucket to take to the compost heap, preferably without a child in tow getting grubby, soaking his clean socks, and tracking mud back into the house. I could use my three minutes to balance the checkbook. If I hurry, I can hang the damp laundry safely out of reach before my baby has a chance to drag it across the patio. I might even experience a fragment of coherent thought.
Then I hear the rustling...the contented chatter...the sounds of a sweet-natured child playing quietly. I'm lulled by the thought of peaceful investigation of educational toys...his delight in cuddling a beloved teddy bear. I'm drifting away, giving in to my desperation induced complacency.

HE opening night for Paul D'Arcys latest exhibition on Friday 30th March at the Daffodil TGallery was a great success. Trevor Sargent
opened the exhibition and local art lovers turned out in force. The paintings, a mix of real and surreal, draw the viewer in and stimulate the imagination. They are concerned with the balance of nature and the universe and are truly stunning. Paul revealed that 14 out of the 20 had sold and other galleries were coming to view the rest later in the week.

hands. The skipper gets two shares, the rest get one each.
That can mean good money for a young man on a good day. But fish ing is seasonal. There are many days when you'll catch hardly anything. “April and May are the hungry months - great weather but nothing out there.
“The other killer is the twin riggers out of Howth - big boats that can go out in all kinds of weather,” he says.
“It's hard to believe, when you go into a supermarket and see the price of prawns, that there's no living to be made as a fisherman. But the price is set by the one processing plant.”
John says the government should set the minimum price for prawns. “If it keeps going this way there'll be no one to do the job. There used to be 24 boats out of Balbriggan, now there are 16. Skerries used to have the biggest fleet in Ireland - now it has about four boats.”
Although the fishing life is tough, John will miss it. Most people don't even know where prawns come from, the hardship and the heartache. But most people have also never seen a 30-foot pilot whale bobbing in the water in front of them, or snatched a seagull out of the air and rocked it to sleep in their hands, or seen the sun rise over the sea.
John's pain is that of a man who recognises that he may never be able to support his family doing what is most important to who and what he is: a fisherman through and through.
“My wife says I still thrash around, roaring `hold that net' sometimes at night in my sleep,” says John. “She knows I can never be totally happy without being on the boats. Ever.”

How to tell your Torahs from your Celtic cúizis
Report by PAULINE O’HANLON
he monthly meeting of the Skerries Historical Society was held in Keanes Bus Bar on Tuesday T13th March. The talk entitled "Irish County
Nicknames and Coats of Arms" was given by John A. Kavanagh. It was an interesting, intriguing lecture given without any notes or slides.
The talk ranged from the Old Testament, to the Crusades, the Saracens, Brian Boru, Henry VIII of England, the American Revolution and Lord Cornwallis, The Duke of Wellington, Daniel O'Connell and Catholic Emancipation.
We learned about the nicknames of some of our Irish Counties. Meath - the Royal County - was where the Royal High Kings lived at Tara. The name Tara, was supposedly derived from the Jewish Book of the Torah. Brian Boru was, probably, the nearest concept of a Celtic High King. According to Celtic Law a candidate for High Kingship would have to be fearless, have great wisdom, strength, charisma and be without physical blemish or handicap. The Coat of Arms of County Meath is full of symbolism. On the shield is the five-pointed Irish Crown, denoting the fine ancient provinces or 'cúizí' of Ireland. The salmon on the coat of arms signifies the Salmon of Knowledge which Fionn Mac Cool touched with his thumb and became very knowledgeable. Fionn also received healing powers from the Salmon. From Fionn's healing prayer "Slainte an Bhradain Cughat" we still have the drinking toast "Slaínte".
John Kavanagh is the author of two books - one entitled "Irish County Nicknames and Arms" is a detailed account of all the 32 counties of Ireland. His second book deals with states of America. He is now working on a third book. He had copies of his books and we will be able to delve into the histories of thecounties of Ireland. Carmel Power gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the society.

TIDY TOWNS REMINDERSKERRIES Tidy Towns would like to remind everyone in the town that it is illegal to place notices on lamp posts, poles and cars. This is known as flyposting and is subject to heavy fines. They also say they’d be grateful if residents would check outside their homes for graffiti and remove it as soon as they can, as graffiti will lose Skerries much-needed points in the Tidy Towns Competition. If you need advice on how to remove it, contact Skerries Tidy Towns through the Community Centre and someone will do their very utmost to get back to you with some useful tips.
