See Inverting an image on page 121.

Layer blending

In the Layer Editor, the following color correction options have been addedto provide additional image editing tools:

Screen Produces an overall lightening effect to the composition. Eachpixel on the layer is brightened by a value equal to or lesser than the value ofpixels on other layers occupying the same location in the layer stack. Itproduces an effect opposite to that of Multiply.

See Softly lighten an image on page 140.

What’s new | 5

Page 14: Sketch Book Pro 11

Multiply Produces an overall darkening effect to the layer appearance. The value for each pixel on the layer is darkened by a value equal to or greaterthan the value of pixels on other layers occupying the same location in thelayer stack. It produces a similar effect to combining one or more photographictransparencies together and looking through them.

See Softly darken an image on page 142.

Add Lightens the overall composition, similar to Screen, but in a moreextreme manner. Each pixel is brightened by a value equal to or lesser thanthe value of pixels on other layers occupying the same location in the layerstack. This is applied as a lineaer calculation.

See Add light to an image on page 144.

None Removes any color correction applied to the layer.

See Remove color correction on page 146.

Persistent layer selection

After selecting a region on the canvas, if you switch layers, the “marchingants” created by the Select/Lasso/Crop tools stay active. Your selection isn’tlost.

TroubleshootThe following is a list of known issues:

The installer does not obey the OS native language

Example: You want English; however, instead, the installer obeys the Standardsand Formats language setting (Control Panel > Regional and Language Options)and French appears.

Why: The Standards and Formats language setting is set to French. Many userswho use an English OS often set their regional language to another language,so that they can properly view formatted documents in that language.

Solution: Since Sketchbook is language agnostic, you can edit your preferencesand set the language you want.

1 Select Edit > Preferences > Language (After after application restart).

2 Select a language from the pull-down menu.

3 Click OK.

4 Restart your machine for the change to take affect.

Cursor offset, acceleration, and pen input

Users of either the Wacom Cintiq or Intuos tablet devices may experience thefollowing issues due to drivers or Wacom tablet properties:

■ Cursor offset (Cintiq)

■ Cursor acceleration (dual monitor setups)

■ Erratic pen input

See Wacom tablet troubleshooting on page 213 for more information.

About layersKeep your work in layers to simplify changes and explore variations.

What are layers?

Layers let you mark up an image without modifying the image itself, or anyother layers. Use multiple layers for drawing complex sketches or to testvariations in a design.

Layers also let you take a screenshot. See Take a screen snapshot on page 197.

How do I use layers?

However, try creating your own icons. Thistopic provides instructions and criteria on how to create custom brush icons.

NOTE You can assign custom icons to custom brushes that appear in the bottomof the Brush Palette, not to default brushes.

What you need

Each icon you create must be a PNG image file that is 32 x 32 pixels. A custombrush icon not matching these criteria does not appear.

For each icon, create three image files:

One image of the icon itself, given a descriptive name. For example,MyBrush.png. This file name appears in the Icons list of the Identify CustomBrush window.

One image for the icon in rollover state (that is, for when the cursorpasses over it). This file must use the same name as the first icon, but with“_over” added to the end (use the underscore character "_" and not a space). For example, MyBrush_over.png.

Create your own brush icons | 185

Page 194: Sketch Book Pro 11

One image for the icon in selected state (that is, for when it is the currentbrush). This file must use the same name, with “_press” added to the end. Forexample, MyBrush_press.png.

About the sample icon

There is a sample icon called "Sample," visible in the Icon list of theIdentify Custom Brush window.

This sample icon provides three image files for the icon in its three states. Findthese files, named "Sample.png", "Sample_over.png", and “Sample_press.png",in the following folder:

■ For PC:

If one of the following icons appear for any of its three states, you cannotselect the icon or assign it:

The PNG file for this icon state does not meet criteria.

The PNG file for this icon state does not exist.

Tips for creating brush icons

It is a good idea to design the icon no larger than 28 x 28 pixels, so that thereis a 2-pixel margin around it.

If you would like to match the RGB values used for other product icons, followthe values listed:

■ The dark blue color used as the ink is R=84, G=107, B=126.

Tips for creating brush icons | 187

Page 196: Sketch Book Pro 11

■ The light blue color used as the background is R=222, G=230, B=235.

■ The orange color used as the rollover highlight and selected color is R=255,G=153, B=0.

For the rollover state, an orange halo spills over the icon image. For the selectedstate, the orange is contained within the image.

Page 232: Sketch Book Pro 11

3 Move the slider to the right to increase the responsiveness of the stylus.

For PC

For Mac

As you move toward the Less end of the scale, the feel of the stylusbecomes softer. You do not have to press hard to get dark and thickstrokes.

As you move toward the More end of the scale, the feel of the stylusbecomes harder. Press hard to get dark and thick strokes.

4 Test your stylus on the canvas. Experiment with different types of brushes.

NOTE The Pen Responsiveness window stays up while you test.

5 Keep testing with different responsiveness values until the marks on thescreen look and feel right.

With heavy pressure, the markers and other heavier brushes tend to makedark, thick strokes. With light pressure, the pencils tend to make light, but visible strokes.

NOTE You may need to adjust the pen responsiveness each time you use adifferent tablet or stylus.
