Barbara’s Column By Barbara Nelson [email protected] Passing the Baton

After providing leadership to the Long Beach Ski Club for nearly seven years, Kris Flaig is passing the baton of the Club Presidency to me, Barbara Nelson, this month. We all thank Kris for the tremendous amount of time and energy, talents and care he put into keeping this club we all love vibrant all this time.

I’m a long-time member who held a number of offices in prior years, including serving as President in the 1995-96 ski year. The slogan used by the club then was, "Join for the Fun - stay for the Friends." That applies today as well.

The experienced and enthusiastic members of the Board of Directors are planning wonderful events to facilitate the "fun factor" while all members develop lasting friendships when participating.

Let us all look forward to a fabulous 2019-20 Ski Season and Club Year!

Get Loose with Lance - Social

By Lance Liebl [email protected]

The July 13th barbecue at Lisa and Brian Maloney’s was a blast! Brian fired up three separate grills using hardwood charcoal. No liquid fire starter.

Over twenty-five club members and some new guests joined the fun. Nia and Eric brought a couple who will probably join.

We had five areas for members to sit and enjoy their dinner. The club provided sweet corn, watermelon and water. Club members did a great job providing appetizers and deserts to share. See the pictures of happy faces below.

The Maloney’s back yard is our best venue for patio parties. Lisa designed the back yard, with a large pool and Jacuzzi. The Maloney’s hired me to rebuild their raised deck with a pergola built out of smooth cedar. New steps and wrought iron railing were included.

Several social events will follow. The final barbecue at Casa Lopez estate. Dave Lopez will be hosting August 17th, starting at 5pm.

On September 21st, we will have a wine tasting at Bistro Saint Germaine in Seal Beach. This is a club favorite location for French appetizers and a fantastic wine selection. I recommend you be there close to 5pm to get a seat at our table.

On October 19th, our other Wine Tasting will be at District Wine on Linden Ave. Our annual Open House is October 26th at the Golden Sails Best Western hotel. This is located on Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach. Please bring a friend to see how great LBSC has been for over 40 years. There will be flyers sent out for all these upcoming events.

Week Trips with Mark Mark Malan [email protected]

It is hot out there. So now is the perfect time to think about going skiing in Italy. We are half sold out. Tell your friends to go on-line and grab the form and get reserved. Small $500 monthly payments will be painless and the trip will be unforgettable. Have them sign up now. PAYMENTS can be made on-line. Go to the club's web site!!! We’re going to SKI the Matterhorn. The Club Med in Cervinia, Italy will be our home base. All food, beverages, and lift tickets are included. They even have nightly entertainment and offer some ski lessons at no cost. This will be real fun.

Check this out! The optional five-day tour of Northern Italy with the Club will be staying at 4-star hotels. Please go on line to visit these sites:

www.miramaresestrilevante.com We’ll be here three nights and tour Cinque Terre and do some wine tasting at a local winery.

www.hotelvillacappugi.com We’ll tour a Chianti vineyard in Tuscany on one day and shop Florence on the next.

Flights are in/out of LAX on Swiss Air and Lufthansa depending on traveling for ski week or if the five-day extension is selected. The extension is for three nights in Sestri Levante, where we will take a quick train ride to Cinque Terre and other activities during two full days before going to Pistoia for two nights. From Pistoia, we will visit Tuscany and Florence. There will be multiple wine tastings, as this region is internationally known for its wine and is as picturesque as anywhere in Italy.

The extension is available for only 20 people. Our coach seats 36 people, so there is room for luggage. Skis fly free on Swissair and cost $250 on Lufthansa, so many will find renting new skis cheaper and easier than carry skis. We have 15 rooms with two beds and 5 for single supplement in Cervinia at Club Med. It is hard on international trips to increase or decrease the number of participants so, you need to send in your Reservation Request NOW.

If paying online, email the sign-up paperwork to me. PLEASE specify if you have a roommate or if you are in need of one. Same gender room selections can be made by trip chairman. Trip insurance will be added at the cost of 6.5% to everyone's balance. We don't want anyone to lose their money if travel must be cancelled. Insurance is provided by SKI.com.

For those not paying in full at time of registration submittal, payments will be $500 a month starting on July 15, 2019 until paid. The balance can be paid in full at any time.

Racing with Eric By Eric Hartman [email protected]

I attended a race league meeting in July. There may only be one race next year on March 14. The December Meeting may be in conflict with the masters races on December 14-15. There seems to be a couple of efforts going on. First is to combine all the race leagues at Mammoth onto one league. Second, is that San Diego wants all racers to pay an upfront race league fee of $30 for the season in addition to the daily race fee of $55. I am not sure how that fee is going to work and why the fee. There is also some discussion about registering on line for races. There will also be only one clinic set for March 13.

Membership By Craig Gibson [email protected] Membership numbers continue to climb albeit artificially as our membership year has been extended from 12 months to 16 months. As many of you may know, at our annual banquet, we voted to change our membership year from a beginning date of June 1 to a beginning date of October 1. If you have not renewed your membership for 2019-20 you still are a member of the club until September 30. Membership applications are located at the bottom of this publication so, if you need to renew, please print it out, fill it out, and send it in. Over the past several years our club has experienced consistent growth in our membership and this year we hope to number more than 100. Keep ‘em coming! Have friends that like to BBQ? Let them know about our grilling event at Casa Lopez this month. Have friends that like to taste wine? Let them know about our tasting at St. Germaine in September. Have friends that like to SUP, kayak, bike, roller blade? Send them to Mike. Have friends that ski or board? Let them know about the many trips already planned and soon to be announced. Now is a great time to join.
